1. Yep - these qaashin should be treated like this and worse. I can't believe how Somalis keep ripping off gaalo - 25k to transport these idiots from Nairobi into Somalia. I'll do it for 10k - how do I get that deal??
2. Stuff and nonsense article. Kenyan officials and oil prospectors already in the country are drumming up positive news to get more licensing fees and financing.
3. Greedy business people. Somalis are not lazy - tell that to fisherman, farmers, pastoralists, dockworkers etc and all the ones in the West working as cleaners and in senior homes. There is no real government authority and the business people are the same ones who dismantled national infrastructure in Mogadishu in 1990s to sell off. In no African country are Somalis hired as employees by nationals - thus Somalis are forced to become business owners and they end up providing jobs for Kenyans, Ugandans etc. We provide jobs for them in their own countries - why are we providing jobs for them in ours?
4. ^If Somali pastoralist culture contains many things that are contrary to Islam - these should be discarded rather than labelled or mislabelled. I'm not sure you have your priorities sorted out there. Goth is championing white wedding dresses, western suits and mixed dancing - this is not Somali culture. This is the mental colonialism that was talked about. It isn't any better than Somalis who would dress up in shalwar khameez and do Bollywood dances. Oddly enough - the only Somalis who loudly proclaim they are preserving Somali culture are the ones who hold these western style weddings. Just give it a rest.
5. For Bashir Goth, the less Islam the better. I don't care what people do at their weddings - and for the record - weddings like this one happen all the time - it's hardly a rarity. But this idea that he is advocating for some vanguard of Somalia culture is insulting.
6. Mike is a convicted rapist. He will always be. Bringing it up in a particular context will happen. He needs to learn how to address it not act like a foul mouthed buffoon. This video only serves to reconfirm how little actual growth he has done as a person. It's weird how he is getting all this support from Solers.
7. ^Dhaqankooda fiican hada ma maqanyahay? What does batrool have to do with it? What exactly does this phrase mean? An idiot who has hatred and ill will in addition to incompetency and drunkenness. He should have been removed long ago.
8. If the case filed by Somalia at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is determined in its favour Somalia’s maritime boundary in the Indian Ocean would stretch all the way to Tanzania’s shores. Is this a tabloid newspaper? I thought it was the biggest daily in Kenya. Since when does Kenya not have an Indian Ocean coast that doesn't exclude their maritime grab? An article full of delusions and is out to misinform and ignite public anger needlessly. The only good thing to come of it is to acknowledge how likely Kenya is to lose this case.
9. Where is the outrage and accountability? Today the president had a celebratory 2 year anniversary and no one asks him the hard questions. HAG echo chamber? Cajeeb.
10. Shimbaryahow heesay! This is the man the UN Monitoring group has said he and his minions were attempting to pocket tens of millions of overseas assets of Somalia in cahoots with Shulman Rogers. Under his watch - numerous attacks on Villa Somalia have occurred including one where his own appointed imam's relative led the charge. The UN group has also said key members of his administration and advisers have sold or donated weapons to al-Shabab. Juba administration was forced on the President by the IC - it was not something he wanted. As is the nascent Baidoa state - this President has no shown no real desire for federalism and regional power sharing. Before this latest push by Amisom and the Somali army - territories free of al-shabab were the same as when Shiekh Shariif left. If his tenure was an unmitigated success - Sacid would not be out and the scapegoat for the problems of his rule. In short - a failure as President.
11. ^Nothing is unfair to this man. The biggest political prostitute this country has seen in recent times. His commentary is meaningless and should not be sought or even entertained.
12. ^Relax Nuune. The fact that Kenya felt it could award exploration blocks to oil companies necessarily means that it disputes the boundaries of Somalia's territorial waters. If the Somali govt wanted to award exploration rights - Kenya would tell companies that contracts are invalid since they claim those waters as their own. This issue has to eventually be resolved one way or the other. But I agree the Somali govt should not have filed the suit. Kenya didn't file and that may mean their case is weak. Ultimately - Kenya won a PR point - but that's it at this stage. No one holds this govt to account in the press - it is just very strange. Poor Shiekh Shariif - the shrieking in his Kenya giveaway was heard around the world. Maybe has to do with the idiot who is the speaker of parliament today.
13. @YoniZ said: You clearly haven't read the file submitted by FGS. Thus, your 12 miles EZZ assertion is based on your emotional outburst, rather than the contents of the filed document, or even some knowledge about the topic you are discussing here. Why 2009?, your answer is above if you care to read. OIL exploration. Somalia was in coma when the current United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) came into force in 1994. This case is one of many that any Somali government would have dealt with. Your suggestion is what? SFG not to take any legal step, and keep meeting with these Kenyan politicians who are busy giving new blocks to giant oil companies? ICJ is competent in dealing with these kind of matters. It is not as you would have liked to portray a Kenyan stooge. Eritrea vs Yemen 1998 Hanish Islands can attest to that. In political perspective, Kenya lost this case, the same day that Norway couldn't succeed attaining Mr Key's current position. I think the point Nuune is making is valid. Why not dismiss Kenya's claims which are clearly bogus rather than acknowledging a dispute over something which Somalia owns outright? My understanding is that states need to demarcate EEZ amongst themselves - where there is a dispute the tribunal steps in. But this case should have been filed by Kenya - if it felt it really had a case. Not sure why the President did this. And did it when no Parliament was there. So you believe that ultimately the tribunal will adjudicate in favour of Somalia? Why? Does anyone have info on similar cases and how they turned out?
14. The police bear a large share of the responsibility. How is it possible that repeated complaints even if withdrawn are not thoroughly investigated? How is it possible that it didn't occur to police that a 14 year child wouldn't be intimidated into withdrawing a legitimate complaint? If police had done their job properly this would have stopped much earlier.
15. They are acting like a country protecting interests rather than the usual money grab. I wonder what is the likely resolution. I'm assuming if Kenya thought it can win - it would take the case up already.
16. It is a fairly successful society. But they live somewhat narrow lives - small houses, small cars, high taxes and high prices. You don't have to be ostentatious and lavish like some Arabs but there is a middle way and Norway's hoarding culture is not it. BTW - Norway has less than 5 million people while Nigeria has 150 million. Oil can only go so far.
17. More important than capturing Barawe - are they going to let these criminals just escape? Why are there no captures of large numbers of Al-Shabab including commanders? Is the mashruuc set to continue by letting them go to cause more havoc later?
18. What functioning lix gobol mamul is there? Are we making up stuff here? These few protestors can't dictate their desires to others. There was a meeting of elders in Kismayo last year and they have decided to form their own administration in Jubboyinka. There are two choices here - either keep up with pointless protests which should be their right if they so choose. Or build what you have and convince/negotiate to get a lix gobol mamul in the future. Rabble rousing is much easier than building governance.
19. Not sure why this is resulting in a long rant. It is a gimmick - but one that has raised a lot of money for a good cause. Why can't that be the metric to judge things rather than try to speculate on people's motives?
20. Good move by PL. Let the IC be the arbiters when you can't even get the Somali government to consult PL about districts that it rules. And now a scholarship fiasco - it reveals the chicanery that is the epitome of Xamar.
21. ^The process for Jubba and Shabelle etc was to call elders and clan leaders in the absence of any agreed upon administration or representative of the peoples' will. If you are going to call that forced - that is up to you though I don't see anything illegitimate in this. This is not the case in the three districts of PL in Mudug. There is a legitimate administration responsible for the people. It has to be consulted on any proposed new state. Otherwise - it has no basis. There is no trust or reconciliation between PL and Hobyo/Harardheere. There is no desire to come together. There is no desire even within Galmudug and Ximan/Xeeb to create a joint administration and resolve their issues. That is the reality. Unless - the FG is committed to preparing the groundwork to address outstanding issues and build trust - this attempt at state building here is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. It is doomed to fail.
22. ^You still don't get it do you? There is no dictation in Somalia anymore. Puntland can't dictate to the FG and the FG can't dictate to Puntland. If we want a functioning country - there has to be dialogue, consultation, joint decision making and respect. Puntland is the only real entity in the country - all the rest are just starting out or like the FG in precarious control of the capital and surroundings. Given this - there is no need to antagonize PL unless you have the agenda to further fragment this country.
23. @galbeedi said: Dr.K, that adding Mudug to puntland is sharing and real federalism. As you said a different group , the HAG will be big part of Puntland. So far I didn't hear one single Puntlander saying all Mudug should join Puntland. They saying the status quo shouldn't be changed. They want three Districts and the other two to go to the central state. Federalism is not about willy nilly combining two or more regions. It is about the people in the regions to be combined coming to an understanding and wanting to combine their regions. I don't believe the two districts of Mudug should be added to PL without the understanding and acceptance of the Galgaduud clans. And also the three PL districts of Mudug should not be added to a possible Central State without the understanding and acceptance of the PL clans. And let's face it - the unruly clans in this area make for the worst neighbours in Somalia - they don't get along between themselves - why would anyone want to join them in a state? This announcement is not real federalism - it is phantom federalism. Ultimately this will die and a new arrangement will be worked out. Culusow has a habit of picking losing battles and getting reversed.
