LONDON (Somalilandpress) — The Chatham House has facilitated a meeting on Thursday between representatives of Somaliland’s three official political parties in order to ensure a stable election process takes place in the country. Mr Faisal Elmi, Vice-Chair of UDUB Party in the UK, Mr Ibrahim Hussein, Vice-Chair of Kulmiye Party in the UK and Mrs Saynab Sahardiid, Chairwoman of UCID Party in the UK were invited on Thursday to provide an insight into the challenges which the region faces in the run-up to elections. The participants also included Mr Adam Jibril, Somaliland Envoy to the UK, Mr Ahmed Esse, UK Secretary for International Co-operation & Planning, UCID Party and Mr Mohamed Omar, Foreign Affairs Spokesman, KULMIYE Party. The discussion was chaired by Mrs Sally Healy, Africa Programme Associate Fellow, Chatham House. Despite the lack of international recognition, Chatham House considers Somaliland to be one of the “few secure and democratic territories of the Horn of Africa”. The Chathan House expressed concerns about Somaliland’s stability and whether if the elections are not held on time it could cause further deterioration to region which is already the most volatile in Africa. The panel faced questions ranging from if the election will be held on the proposed June 26th date to al-Shabab and other extremist organisations in the region, which could spoil the elections. The three representatives have assured the presidential election will stay inline with the set timeline and there will not be any more postponements. While addressing the panel, Mr Ibrahim Hussein of Kulmiye said the National Electoral Commission (NEC) should operate entirely independent. “There must not be any orders from the government during the election date, all responsibilities should be given to the NEC to ensure compliance with voting procedures,” he said. Mrs Saynab of UCID said she is worried the turnout for the election low might be lower than anticipated since many have crossed into neighbouring countries during the recent floods in the capital. Even though the meeting was not a policy debate, however the three did get into a heated debate exchanging many attacks although they stayed united on the state’s sovereignty and maintaining peace. The meeting lasted about an hour an a half. Meanwhile, a delegation from the NEC led by Vice-Chair, Mr Ali-khadar Hassan Osman is due in London in the coming hours to obtain and ship out the official presidential elections’ ballot papers. Chatham House, previously known as The Royal Institute of International Affairs, is a non-profit, non-governmental think tank that facilitates meetings and discussions in order to understand major international issues and current affairs.

Djibouti's president Ismail Omar Guelleh warned on Wednesday that Somalia's Western-backed transitional government may not survive the intensified conflict with armed insurgents. Guelleh appeared before the United Nations Security Council in New York to plead for action, saying he called for help in October 2008 and could deliver the same speech again now "given the frozen nature and persistence of the problems facing the region then and today". "I cannot see how we can avert the possibility of Somalia's plunge into an avoidable disintegration," he said. Guelleh said the transitional government controls only a few blocks in the capital Mogadishu with the help of the UN mission and is "fast shrinking" under the advance of insurgents throughout the country. He called on the 15-nation council to end its rhetoric and adopt measures to save Mogadishu and its 2 million inhabitants, who are besieged by armed militia and fanatical gangs. The government has become "irrelevant and inconsequential", he said. Guelleh said the collapse of Somalia will affect the Horn of Africa. Other problems include the persistent conflict between Eritrea and its neighbours, including Djibouti. He charged that Eritrea has continued its aggressive stance against Djibouti since the military clashes between the two countries in 2008. Guelleh was in New York to attend a council debate on conflicts in Africa. He said armed conflicts remain at the top of Africa's adversities despite efforts to stop them in the past three decades.

^ ^ Waa indhahaaga ,,,,, Karl, Nothing really. Ethiopia is going for elections tomorrow and as there are local militias gathering in that area they were there to reinforce their border security. Somaliland in the other hand is taking the opportunity to further strengthen the security in Sool region as the country is going for elections next month.

From April 30th to May 10th, we had a team of medical doctors, and anesthetists visiting us at Edna Hospital from WAHA (Women and Health Alliance International) and in partnership with UAE Red Crescent Authority. They were here to carry out fistula repair operations for women from all over the Horn of Africa. This opportunity offered free surgery and free pre and post operation care. To make this chance known to all those who could benefit from it, we utilized all the media available to us. We made radio announcements, took out ads in the local newspapers and even sent out mass SMS / mobile phone messages. The response was the largest ever at our hospital. Over 30 women, from both Somaliland and Somalia, took part in this fistula camp. Many of the moving stories that were related to us by the women brought tears to our eyes. One particular story stands out of a woman who has been suffering from an obstetric fistula for 20 years. She visited every traditional healer and tried every outlandish method, but she was never told that her condition could only be repaired surgically. After 20 years, she is dry and we are so grateful that we were given the chance to help this woman and others like her. We are indeed blessed. We’re grateful and proud that the visiting team contained 2 female surgeons from Ethiopia. They were excellent surgeons and well experienced and they were also great role models for our medical students, nurses and midwives and all hospital staff who worked with them. This intensive fistula camp was also a great opportunity for Somaliland doctors to take part in the surgeries and work with an international team. A simple thank you is not enough to express our gratitude for the support and excellence of the WAHA and UAE Red Crescent team. The qualifications of the professionals and the quality of the surgeries performed were inspiring and unequaled. We very sincerely hope that WAHA and UAE Red Crescent will keep us in their future plans for a visit once or twice a year, as much work still remains.
