SOMALILAND FORUM PRESS RELEASE Since the declaration of its independency from rest of Somalia, in 1991, Somaliland has proven to be in a unique and strategic position in the horn of Africa. For almost 20 years now, Somaliland maintained great stability despite the chaotic situation in the neighboring country of Somalia. The country also stands firmly against increasing terrorist activities and the piracy operations in the region. Without significant support from the international community and with limited resources people of Somaliland managed regular rounds of peaceful, free and fair elections, they were also able to build the necessary government structures, improve the national infrastructure and build security forces that succeeded to protect the country against the spread of any form of extremism as well as the piracy in its waters. Following to the recent presidential election and the inauguration of the new government in July this year, Somaliland has overcome number of security challenges, as the country is still in a sensitive transitional period where the new government is mainly focusing on reforming the structure and government positions, some, took the opportunity to smuggle armed militia and military consignments in the aim to destabilize the neighboring countries. Somaliland Forum believes that in order to avoid future insecurity in the region, building the capacity of the police, coastal guards and intelligence should be the way forward in the near future. This new development shows that it is not only piracy that is threatening Somaliland waters but also smuggling terrorist and weapons to instigate instability in Somaliland and the neighboring countries. Somaliland government must be vigilant to what is happening in the region and take all the necessary steps to ensure the borders are tight and the seashore is save from any illegal activities. The government must work and empower the local residents in order to strengthen chain of security in and around the coastal areas. At the same time, Somaliland government must maintain its close ties and relations with the neighboring countries to deal regional security threats in a collaborative manner. Somaliland Forum recommends that the international community, African Union, IGAD and other regional bodies to understand the importance of supporting Somaliland’s mission, in order to tackle repetition of such unlawful activities. Provision of adequate support will prevent Somaliland to be possible transit point and a hub for the international terrorists, criminals and anarchists desperate to overtake and spread their activities in Horn of Africa. Somaliland is little-known as an adventure travel destination. The breakaway region of northern Somalia isn't even recognized as a nation, but traveling in Somaliland I found it to be a fascinating and friendly country. Its biggest draw for visitors is the well-preserved cave art at Laas Geel, shown above. Now Somaliland has even more ancient attractions with the announcement that archaeologist Dr. Sada Mire has discovered rock art at almost a hundred more sites in Somaliland. The Somali-born archaeologist says the paintings date to various periods from two to five thousand years ago. Images include animals, the moon in various phases, and a remarkable four-thousand-year-old depiction of a mounted hunter. Ten of the sites are so outstanding that they'll be candidates for UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list. Her findings will appear in the next issue of Current World Archaeology. I met Dr. Mire last year in London, and while she was anxious to promote archaeological tourism to her country, she warned that a lack of funding and education meant ancient sites such as Laas Geel were under threat. Perhaps her spectacular finds will encourage UNESCO and other organizations to take an interest in Somaliland and help foster a sustainable tourism that will be protect and showcase the caves.
