Out of the all the pictures on the first day of the KULMIYE 2nd Conference was that of a much loved much respected woman I met in Hargeisa last year. She is a surviving veteran, one of the many Somaliland women who fought with the gun and took part of the suicide missions that has saved the country. When I saw her standing in the middle of the tent reciting, of course, one of her fantastic poetry, I knew the meeting was a success and women have been made an integral part of the KULMIE. When I visited Hargeisa last year, I was shocked with the damp cloth thrown over the powerful literature of Somaliland. I did not appreciate re-runs of Somaliland’s Plays and Songs recycled in Djibouti on Somaliland televisions, so some friends and I decided to initiate a revival of our literature at the University of Hargeisa. For that much publicized event, there were only male poets. I wanted the voice of women be heard. When I inquired about that, a friend turned on the tape in her car, and Sado’s exuberant voice filled the air but more so, her voice filled our hearts with two poems she wrote years ago but which I thought were relevant even at that time. Immediately, I asked my friend where to find her. My friend bowed her head almost in shame and told me quite softly that Sado lives in the worst ghettoes of the city and in dire need. I still wanted to see her; so we went to her shabby dwelling. On our way, my friend told me that she is a veteran who supported KULMIYE but jumped ship for survival. We parked the car outside some huts and my friend brought her back to the car. I was unable to invite this abandoned veteran for a literature event without first apologizing to her for the way our government treated her and others like her. I was also unable to let her walk into a university hall with almost 1000 people in her well worn clothes and uncouth style but sadly, I could not find the courage to offer her money. So with teary eyes I introduced myself and begged her to lend us her poetry for an evening of goodwill. She was happy to help. My friend took over the rest. On the agenda, we did not mention Sado’s name or her poetry but we named her ‘Daljirka Dahsoon ee Dayacan’ and let her poetry speak for itself. She moved everyone in the audience. At the end of the evening, my friend joked with her and said, ‘Sado was a KULMIYE supporter but left us in the cold into which Sado responded. ‘I am always a KULMIYE supporter even if need forced me head elsewhere. I left my heroine Sado with this note: ‘You deserve the best for your efforts. This is the land you saved and you sit behind no one.’ And today I want to say to her. Best Greetings from overseas. The rising death toll of innocent Somali citizens could have long been nipped, but for a deliberate turning away by the international community, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said in Nairobi. “We have collectively failed the Somali child, the Somali woman and the Somali people,’’ Obasanjo said in a keynote address, which he delivered at meeting on Somalia’s Finance and Economic Issues on Friday. “We have failed ourselves,’’ he stressed in the address entitled: “The Advancement of Peace in Somalia’’, which was made available to the newsmen in Abuja. “We cannot continue and we should stop the implicit and latent ranking of conflicts which had relegated the Somalia issue to the background,’’ Obasanjo said. Obasanjo said the international community continued to show preference for some countries by ranking conflicts across the globe, while forgetting the common humanity that bound all. Obasanjo said that the downturn in the economy of Somalia and the sufferings of many, were indications of international neglect, rather than symptoms of a “failed state’’. He expressed regret that the international community continued to pay lip service to the conflict in Somalia, while focusing on other conflicts with higher economic benefits. Newsmen quotes him as querying that: “Was Somalia given the same attention and resources as Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo by the international community? “Could it be that we have concluded that Somalia is not of any strategic relevance to the international community and Africa? “Could it be that lack of “strategic’’ mineral resources within the borders of Somalia has made its case somewhat unimportant and irrelevant? Or Could it be that lack of a demonstrable high nuisance value is the Achilles heel of Somalia?’’ “How else can we explain that a world that could afford to expend well over five billion dollars in 78 days in Kosovo and an additional 55 billion dollars in reconstruction costs could not afford to find the required resources for peace in Somalia? “How can we explain that a world that could spend 500 billion dollars, deploy 168,000 American troops, recording the death of almost 4,000 of them in the quest for ‘peace’ in Iraq, could not afford the resources for peace in Somalia?’’ the former president queried further. According to Obasanjo, the Somalia tragedy will continue to be a scar on the conscience of the world, and it will ridicule the entire effort at building global community until it is resolved. “It is this lack of demonstration of the principle of solidarity and collaborative effort that has failed in the Somalia case. “The solidarity that we underline as the basis of our unity and development as a people, a principle that underscores our relationships as neighbours and as Africans. “Solidarity that we underline and capitalise in our charters and constitutive acts will remain mere appellations until we are ready to use it again as guiding, goading and inspirational term. “It is not too late to correct the inadequate human collective efforts on Somalia,’’ newsmen quotes Obasanjo as saying. Quoting a famous sociologist, Ralph Linton, on the subject of solidarity, Obasanjo said: “If all humanity had been left unaided by others, it is doubtful if any human society would have advanced beyond the level of the stone age.” On the labeling of Somalia as a “failed state’’, Obasanjo said the tagging was derogatory and it undermined the value of lives in that country. “I have often listened to some intellectuals describing the Somalia situation as a failed state, with the implicit message that there is not such, if anything that could be done in Somalia. I find that rather unconscionable. “How can we talk of a failed state where human life and living are involved? In my mind as an analytical tool, the concept of a failed state is at best obscurantist and in the worst of situations a gratuitous insult,’’ he said. Obasanjo warned academics and political leaders to be wary of concepts that had been coined to gain wide acceptance, without really conveying values to the African states and economy. “Indeed and in truth, what has failed in Somalia is a myriad of highly ineffective, largely selective and predetermined initiatives and efforts at conflict resolution at the local, regional and global level. “What has actually failed is global governance, what has happened which is a failure on our part, is our collective willingness to live with such a blight on our conscience and consciousness,’’ he said. Citing an instance, the former president said a concept such as the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) failed to improve the African economy, in spite of its wide acceptance and usage. “We recall with pain the foisting of a patently absurd economic framework called SAP on us and the effort it took on the part of some progressively inclined leaders to reject and repudiate the concept,’’ he recalled. He added that it was after its failure that “the World Bank and the IMF agreed that it was a totally misleading and hastily conceived framework as unrealistic and certainly irrelevant to our situation doing more harm than good’’. On the way forward for Somalia, Obasanjo said the resolution of the conflict must be based on clearly definable and identifiable principles. “There is need to guard the balance of power, reduce the gap between expectations and power, and reduce the probability of successful violence, ‘’ he said. Obasanjo said a post-conflict Somalia must also be focused on prioritising on economic recovery in order to heal the wounds of loss and poverty, instead of dwelling on political considerations.

Having observed the pictures from the 2nd Congress of the KULMIYE party at the Ambassador hotel in Hargeisa, I was very impressed by the presentation of the congress. The delegates with their official credentials, baseball caps, music, power point presentations and the delegates resplendent in their finest, but I have one question, where is the substance? No new policies nor new ideas; one of the leading candidates for the Presidential elections couldn't even get in and others were so marginalised that they should have stayed at home, but above all the same failed leadership and theories were once again in evidence. Somalilanders are proud of their budding democracy and unlike many other African nations have a lot of time for their politicians, but the people of Somaliland are also perceptive and can see beneath the veneer and polish of spin. The people of Somaliland like their leaders to be humble and accessible, there was nothing humble about the shindig at the Ambassador, in fact, I doubt if many Somalilanders have ever seen the inside of the Ambassador Hotel. I urge UCID and UDUB to hold their congress at the "Beerta Xoriyada", with minimum fuss, but with plenty of substance. In terms of substance, the KULMIYE congress still has a day to go, so I am still hopeful that something concrete will come out of it, a sense of true democracy would be a start. But, I have attended many KULMIYE gatherings in the United Kingdom, and came away impressed by the presentation, but appalled by the lack of identification with the basic realities of the people of Somaliland. If the Somaliland elections are to be decided on pure spectacle then, KULMIYE wins hands down, but the people of Somaliland need a leadership that unites them, responds to them, with ideas and platforms, rather than the tired cry of, "It is our turn". In 1992, Neil Kinnock and the Labour party were poised to end Conservative rule in Britain before an infamous gathering at Sheffield, a case of counting your chickens before they hatch, I fear the Ambassador Congress will be just as fateful to KULMIYE, as it was to the Labour party. As this suppression intensified, the ****** National Liberation Front which fights for the Emancipation of the ****** people took matters into their own hands and removed a Chinese exploration team and a military garrison guarding them at Obole in the ******. On June 9, 2007, the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles, held a news conference and publicly declared war on the ****** people by saying: "We have launched a political and military operation to try to contain the activities of the ****** National Liberation Front [ONLF] in the region…As for the military plans, over the past few days they have started to be implemented". The Ethiopian army and security forces translated the declaration into systematic campaign of genocide by the Ethiopian army. The Ethiopian ´National Defense forces´ (ENDF) initiated an unprecedented reign of terror the scale of which was never seen before. It hanged hundreds of civilians, including young girls and the elderly. The ENDF burned villages, nomadic huts and food reserves. In addition, the army used rape as a weapon by defiling women and young girls, often in front of their family members in order to exact maximum humiliation and demoralization. The unrestrained soldiers did not even spare the livestock, killing hundreds of camels and confiscating thousands of sheep. Understanding the vulnerability of the people to draught and scarcity of water during the dry season, the army destroyed water reservoirs build by the civilians and prevented people from getting water at the few water holes that are available the whole year, unless the people traded the water for young men to fight the liberation front. Furthermore, Ethiopia blockaded all trade into and out of the ******, specially the vital commercial links with Somalia. Ninety percent of ******´s export and import goes through Somalia. The army burned all vehicles it found and shot the passengers. Moreover, it refused food aid and medical supplies from the international community to reach the people and forced ICRC and Doctors without Borders (MSF) to leave. Mr. Commissioner, Then the UN sent a fact-finding mission, which discovered gross Human Rights violations by the ENDF, corroborated previous discoveries by MSF and Human Rights watch. Then the UN and international donors´ missions in Ethiopia pressured the Ethiopian government to lift the blockade, allow food aid and trade and to investigate and stop the violations by its army. At first, Ethiopia stated that it was accepting the demands of the international community but it started to put hurdles in front of the UN and NGOs´ programs. It said that it accepted more than forty NGOs to start work in the ******, but it confined their work to few towns and then it made them virtually under house arrest by refusing them all movements. The UN mission was also not spared. The Ethiopian regime allowed them to open only three offices in the ****** on condition that the UN staff be provided by the security forces. The UN succumbed to Ethiopian pressure and the Ethiopians nominated three colonels from the security to head the offices. It also forced the World Food program to use only military warehouses and army escorts. Moreover, Ethiopia increased its embargo of trade to the ****** by sending a whole Division to the main trade routes with Somalia. On top of that the Ethiopian army of occupation convened a meeting of all the Somali clans along the Somali border, informed them to stop trading with the ******, stop refuges leaving the ******, bring them back to the Ethiopian army and form militias to control the border. Ethiopia promised these clans arms and food aid in return for cooperation and dire consequences for those who breach this injunction. Additionally Ethiopia banned all independent journalists from the ****** except under guided tours. Few brave journalist tried to ignore this and were imprisoned and the expelled from Ethiopia. Today Ethiopia is committing a systematic and thorough depopulation and genocide in the ****** by strengthening its blockade and also insuring that international aid is made ineffective by assuming the role the NGO and UN while diverting or blocking it reaching the victims of it made and nature famine. Upton now NGOs and aid agencies are not having adequate access to the ****** as recently stated by USAID in a hearing before the US Senate. The latest victim of Ethiopian criminal act is the community of Wayla-lagu-xidh. On the 16th of March 2008, the Ethiopian army brought army water tankers and pumped the water from the last artificial Water reservoir (Barkad) in the village. The water reservoir was owned by a man called Dayib Abdi Omar. After filling their water tankers they pumped the rest of the water to the field nearby. The villagers including children and vulnerable elders were left waterless. The nearest water point to the area is about 20 miles in Nus -dariq where there is an Ethiopian army garrison under their control. This monstrous act committed at the height of the Jilal dry season where there is an active famine is intended to punish the villagers for refusing to bring militias to fight the ONLF. The Irony of this act is demonstrated by the fact that this same government declared a few weeks ago that it needed four million US dollars in order to alleviate the water shortage in the ****** rural communities due to the extended dry season. The ****** is today an enwalled gulag where the Ethiopian regime is committing crimes against humanity and it seems that although the international community is aware of what is going on there; it is being at given a meager attention or ignored. The ****** is turning into a human grave and if the Ethiopian government is not forcefully thwarted in it program of depopulation of the ****** through direct genocide or neglect, one day the world will wake up to a tragedy that it cannot do anything about as happened in Rwanda. VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Islam has overtaken Roman Catholicism as the biggest single religious denomination in the world, the Vatican said on Sunday. Muslims more numerous than Catholics: Monsignor Vittorio Formenti, who compiled the Vatican's newly-released 2008 yearbook of statistics, said Muslims made up 19.2 percent of the world's population and Catholics 17.4 percent. "For the first time in history we are no longer at the top: the Muslims have Overtaken us," Formenti told Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano in an interview, saying the data referred to 2006. He said that if all Christian groups were considered, including Orthodox churches, Anglicans and Protestants, then Christians made up 33 percent of the world's population -- or about 2 billion people.The Vatican recently put the number of Catholics in the world at 1.13 billion people. It did not provide a figure for Muslims, generally estimated at around 1.3 billion. Formenti said that while the number of Catholics as a proportion of the world's population was fairly stable, the percentage of Muslims was growing because of higher birth rates. He said the data on Muslim populations had been compiled by individual countries and then released by the United Nations, adding the Vatican could only vouch for its own statistics.
