Obama defends right to build mosque near 9/11 site
Che -Guevara replied to Che -Guevara's topic in General
Prometheus...Islam is comparable to the Third Reich and the Japanese Imperial fascists? Lazy....Obama politely reminded of the rights of people under the constitution and the Masjid is blocks away from the Ground Zero. Those who oppose have other agendas and this and other mosque projects including one in Staten Island is convenient tool to preach hate and farther certain political goals by whipping into frenzy through Islamophobia. -

Obama defends right to build mosque near 9/11 site
Che -Guevara replied to Che -Guevara's topic in General
^Mosque projects in Tennessee, Nebraska, California and other locations are meeting with resistance. I think making stand here is worthy the effort, otherwise if we keep taking it on the chin, many mosques will be opposed and this becomes the norm. I'm glad Bloomberg (he went out of his way to support), Obama, and other sensible came out to defend this project. -

Not been a fan of Obama while but he made right call!! -
US President Barack Obama has staunchly defended controversial plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York. Opponents have protested against the construction of an Islamic cultural centre and mosque several hundred feet away from the site of the Twin Towers. Mr Obama acknowledged "sensitivities" surround the 9/11 site, but said Muslims have the same right to practice their religion "as anyone else". "Our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable," Mr Obama said. Since a New York developer announced plans to build a 13-storey Islamic community centre and mosque about two blocks from the former World Trade Center site, prominent Republican politicians and a host of conservative pundits have attacked the project. Some relatives of people killed in the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 are also opposed to the plan. 'Stab in the heart' In a speech at a White House dinner celebrating Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, Mr Obama waded into the row, saying: "We must all recognise and respect the sensitivities surrounding the development of lower Manhattan, Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground. But let me be clear, as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. Source

Identity Politics and the struggle for liberty and democracy in Ethiopia
Che -Guevara replied to Abtigiis's topic in Politics
There's no social, political, religious, racial, legal and economic basis for Somaliland's secession. On the other hand, the Somali region is recognized as distinct nation under the Ethiopia' Constitution. The Constitution guarantees self-determination up to and including secession granted two thirds of the Somali legislature votes on and approves such measure. -

The U.S. gives about $1 billion annually to Ethiopia. But even as U.S. and other international aid has surged in the last decade, activists charge that the government has become more authoritarian. By Kate Linthicum, Los Angeles Times Thursday, August 12, 2010 Reporting from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Like many in the West, former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia David Shinn watched the country's recent elections for signs that democracy was finally taking root. When the results of the May vote were announced, all but two of 547 parliamentary seats went to the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, the coalition that has been in power here for nearly 20 years, or its allied parties. "How do you win 99% of the vote?" Shinn said. "That's un-American." And yet, he said, "Ethiopia remains a darling of the donor community." Source
