Gunmen have shot dead a member of Somalia's new parliament in an attack in the capital Mogadishu. Mustafa Haji Maalim was gunned down after leaving a mosque in the southern Waberi district following evening prayers, witnesses said. The speaker of parliament, Mohamed Osman Jawari, said he was killed by "elements that are known for cruelty". This appears to be a reference to the Islamist militant group al-Shabab. It was pushed out of Mogadishu last year, but has frequently staged attacks in the city since then and still controls large swathes of southern and central Somalia. On Thursday, a double suicide attack in Mogadishu targeting a restaurant recently opened by Somalis from the diaspora killed 18 people. Battle for control The assassinated lawmaker was the father-in-law of former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and is the first parliamentarian to be targeted since a new 275-member assembly was selected in August. No-one has so far claimed the attack, but al-Shebab has vowed to kill Somali government officials. Mr Mahiga called for an independent investigation, and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. "The MPs were selected in a transparent, consultative and representative manner and were called upon to serve at a critical moment in the history of the country," he said. "This loss has come very early in the life of the new parliament whose work is central to the new path that Somalia has chosen. It is a reminder of the challenges faced by the new institutions and administration." Since the overthrow of President Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia has seen clan-based warlords, Islamist militants and its neighbours all battling for control. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-19690209

By Maxamed Cusman Cumar Tuesday, September 18, 2012 Each year Somalis celebrate the anniversary of the Somali Youth League which falls on 15th May. They sing the famous song, “Soomaaliyey Toosoy, Toosoy Isku Tiirsada; Hadba Kiina Taag Daranee, Taageera Weligiina” (Somalis, stand up; Stand up and lean on each other; And Help anyone who is in need) Not only do we sing but stand up as a mark of respect. Most of the people go to the venues where celebrations are held and sing with others. Some of them might have only heard of the SYL through friends or families. Most of the Somalis hardly know the true history of the party, the good and harm it has done to the national interest. Nevertheless, we are all convinced that the SYL has been the force behind the struggle for independence and for the union of the two territories – former British Somaliland and former Italian Somalia – which formed the Somali Republic on 1st of July 1960. But unfortunately that is a wrong perception because independence with Italy as the Trusteeship Authority was against the principles of the genuine Somali Youth League leadership which opposed the return of an Italian Administration to Somalia in any form or guise. The history of SYL is not that old. It is well within the life span of most of us, although all the founding fathers are no longer with us. The last of them, Ali Hassan Maslah, (Ali Verduro) passed away recently. After the defeat of the Fascist Italy in the World War II, Britain, which was already controlling the Northern region of Somalia, also took over the Italian Somaliland. Click
