  1. Northerner LOL With all these "dh" you sound like a Puntlander Balo majidho haday jidhona ma buudhna.
  2. ^^ Kashanre If you are aching to tell us about someone else that you think deserves the title, then please do. We will consider her for the challenge. But if she can't beat Edna, then definitely second position is still vacant.
  3. ^^Well, it is obvious some people have problems with Somaliland and like the old elephant adage, they don't see theirs. Just wanted to point out the facts sxb. Like Lander said, some one will in a very short time, when this very thread disappears come up and ask the same very question, expecting something his ears (and perhaps your ears too) want to hear. Which is "Kaafir raac" and other trivial you would expect from people like our nationalist Mr. SOO MAAL and Wind.Talker dude.

  5. British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland respectively Sxb, the official name as it was known by the Italians was "Somalia Italiana ". Or if you Anglosize it "Italian Somalia". You can consult any Italian book about Somalia's (Proper) colonial history. I can only guess that they might called Somaliland "Somalia Britiannia" as well. But I am not sure. You can find postcards and even money from that era, and it well says "Somalia". This is a post stamp produced during the Italian colonial times. This might be a good example.

  7. ^^ What do you think LayZieGirl? Being the first Somali girl to get western education and drive her own car, Maddam Edna can be classified as the first breed of the so called Somli "career women"; you know the type that goes, I will have kids later when I am 30+ or delay marriage. Well, she got married to Mohamed X. Ibrahim Egal, but she never had any kids for him. They broke up later, maybe got to do with Her advanced knowdelge about birth control and all that she employed after each night's hard workout by the old fella. C'mon who else wouldn't get mad?
  8. Why do they call it Somaliland? Both Somaliland (English Suffix) and Somalia (Italian suffix) are from colonial era. Why the fuzz sxb?

  10. Energy is where the game is on at the moment. Both countries want to secure as many energy sources as they can possibly find. The Middle East which holds the largest known oil reserves yet, is clearly a US stronghold. The Chinese have Iran as their main reliable energy source. Russia (the secord largest net exporter of Energy) is a wildcard, they will play their cards as they see fit. In South America, Brazil, the largest country and currently an aspiring new powerbroker of the region, has Latin America on its side. Eventhough, its a shortterm playing ground for both gaints, Africans still makes their own choices as to who they'll sell their oil to, something that can not be said about the shameful Arabs.
  11. Sudan, prabably the richest country in the East African block, is doubling its oil output up from 0.5 million to 1 million bpd by next year. This will fetch the country huge lotta money in the billions. So how is Sudan managing this flood of richies? Firstly, they are building a 450 million dollar first class airport, with a capacity to handle upto 8 million passengers of traffic annually. Sudan also recently completed millions worth of government building renovations including the building of the new Sudanese Bank and number of other state institutions that now dominate the Khartoum skylines. Sudan is also arming itself with millions worth of armory and fighter jets bought from China.
  12. It seems that the officials used really excessive and unnecessary force. Tanks and heavy military equipment were used to get a dead person out of hospital and forcefully bury him without the consent of the relatives of the killed person. He was beheaded by a member of the police force because they had an argument about who owned a land. Where did you get that from?? The dead man (alaya raxma raxmiin) was a police officer himself, and his family wanted "An eye for an eye" on the spot... typical natural reactionary for Somalis. The Police wanted to cool things down and first let the dead man be burried and then let things be negotiated without any haste or quick decisions. The problem started there. Most of the killings and problems in Somaliland today is all about land disputes. This is the most serious problem that is still haunting Somaliland and so many people died because of this silly disputes which can errupt into a voilent family to family fude where guns and even knives get involved. Particularly, the fact that there is a lot of guns into the public hands make this matter worse, even the Police becomes a target when the temperatures are high in these kind of family disputes. Anyways, this is about a family not between clans or subclans as the "you know who" want to allude to - just to clearify things. This was a typical Somali family wanting to quickly do their thing, their Somali way of settling things without the authorities' involvement in any way. Which is no acceptable, if there is rule and order here. First the matter will be put to a court, a court will decide if the act was a murder or if it was self defence. The court will also look into the piece of land that was in dispute. The two families, can also look into settling the matter outside court - if both agreed. The good thing is that the killer handed himself to Police and is currently under police custody. But it is unfortunate that other lives were taken and that the government used disproportional force.

  15. Restoration of peace and hope: The Amoud initiative By Abdirahman Adan Mohamoud Ever since the former regime of Mohamed Siyad Bare was toppled, the country descended into anarchy, cataclysm and chaotic situations that followed one after another. Clan-based militiamen turned out to be the key players that run the country’s day-to-day affairs. As a result, all social and governmental institutions fell at the mercy of mayhem and lawlessness ravaging the country. Education became the first victim of this destruction as the physical buildings of schools were either destroyed or left in a state of no legitimate use. Formal schools and all learning/teaching centers were subject to indiscriminate demolition and lootings. Under the daylight sun, the looters sold textbooks, furniture and other educational materials without feeling any remorse. Moreover, due to the increasing insecurity, widespread lawlessness and economic hardships, most qualified teachers fled the country or sought refuge in relatively stable regions. Era of guns, drugs and hopelessness After the collapse of the system, a new phenomenon and a new sort of competition started. The warring factions spearheaded an evil race which its winner was the one that caused the largest possible havoc. The key players of that race were militiamen with assault weapons and armored vehicles who answered to no one except their greed, and evil wishes. Also, the criterion of becoming key player in that race was to be a heavy Kat user, preferably, drug addicted, cruel and desperate whose only skill is banditry, tribal street fighting and rape. Likewise, the rules of the game were provocation, destruction, indiscriminate shootings, and violation of all prevailing principles of Islamic teachings and human rights conventions. This was the political situation of Somalia prior to the establishment of Amoud University. In Somaliland, although the situation was much better than in Southern Somalia, a favorable atmosphere for setting up a university was not either there. However, in the aftermath of the historic Borama Grand Conference in 1993, most of the social services including the education sector were resumed. Schools commenced with the combined efforts of the local community, the then fragile Somaliland government and the international community. However, the overall situation of the country’s most energetic and potentially most productive segment, the youth, was disheartening. The young people belonged to one of three groups. A group discouraged by the surrounding circumstances and the lack of education, re-channeled their efforts on self study schemes to improve their capacity through private schools and home tutoring. Another group was lured by the hallucinations of Kat chewing and spent most of their time in Kat chewing salons, known as “Marfash,†while still the third group attempted overtly and covertly and by all accessible means to leave the country. The creation of Amoud University and the return of hope In this context, a group of intellectuals living and working in the Gulf States brought about a new initiative of establishing an institution of higher education. Motivated by their will to change the direction of the community, the group thought that the establishment of an institution of higher learning at Amoud Valley under the name of Amoud University would serve as the much-needed “vehicle for peace and development†Amoud University, the first post-conflict higher education institution in all over Somalia was officially inaugurated on Nov 4th, 1998. However, to many people, both inside and outside the country, the initiative seemed to be nothing more than emotional sentiment that was neither viable nor attainable. But, due to the unyielding commitment and untiring dedication demonstrated by Amoud University management team and all the other important key players and stakeholders, the project proved to be a shining example to be emulated. Apart from the founding individuals, the credit of establishing an institution of higher learning in a country like Somaliland-a country where everything from text-books, teaching materials, human and financial resources are scarce, goes to the university’s management team who sustained to work under very difficult circumstances. Amoud kick starts age of educational renaissance Nevertheless, as soon as Amoud was set up, it has succeeded to change the course of life of all Somali-speaking communities. The establishment of Amoud University swerved the direction of the tournament from destruction to education. For instance, In Somaliland, since Amoud’s inception, the school enrolment had more than tripled as the young people were re-awakened by the completed educational ladder. Also, it accomplished to re-direct the energy and power of the local people into more productive schemes such as the creation of the appropriate environment of learning in an attempt of “creating hope for tomorrow’s generation†as the slogan of the university indicated. Youth, the key players of yesterday’s destruction were turned the fore-runners of the development path and the efforts of reviving the abandoned educational institutions. If the criteria of being a key player in yesterday’s tournament were young people armed with the Soviet made AK-47 Kalashnikov, now it has shifted to hard work, individual merits, healthy competition, positive thinking and intellectual debates- a criterion best captured by Dahir Mohamoud Haddi’s poem: Hadaanu nahay hurintayada Hawshoodu Cammuud ay tahay Haybtoodu aqoonta tahay Hubkooduna qalinka yahay Amaanku u haynta yahay Similarly, educational renaissance, healthy competition, respect of human rights, ethics and social responsibility, voluntarism, participation of community development projects, nurturing the culture of peace and producing skilled human beings who are capable of solving their conflicts through convincing and compromise became the rules of the new tournament. This race, which Amoud University was widely credited as its initiating and pioneering institution was nothing less than the European educational renaissance that started in Europe in the last millennium. Since its commencement, almost another dozen institutions of higher learning sprung up throughout the former Republic of Somalia- all following the footsteps of Amoud University. Among others, they include University of Hargeisa, Banadir University, East Africa University (Bosaso), Burco University etc. The tolerance and the strong determination, in which Amoud University management team, lecturers and students demonstrated alike, rightly sent a strong signal to the afore-mentioned institutions. The essence of this signal was simple and clear: commitment, sincerity, professionalism and better management of the limited available resources could make a profound difference. More importantly, the establishment of Amoud University served as a unifying factor whereby it put the internal strife to a constant end. Without exception, all the segments of the society put their differences aside and united their meager resources for the realization of one common cause- the betterment of their young generation’s future through assisting Amoud University and similar institutions stand their feet firmly on the ground. Moreover, the newly-emerged phenomenon-mushrooming of universities- challenged the attitudes of policy-makers, social entrepreneurs and the laymen alike who before Amoud, thought that only governments with economic surpluses could set up and run universities. As Amoud university alumni and member of the first batch of this pioneering and confidence-restoring institution, I could clearly recount the astonishment coupled with the sense of delight and pride one could visibly read on the faces of Amoud University visitors who came from every corner of the earth to witness what is going on at Amoud University. One of these experiences flashes in my memory every now and then. Early in 1999, a delegation came from eastern regions of Somaliland, where the scars of the civil strife were still engraved in the minds and hearts of their local people. Unwilling to rely on the second-hand reports, the delegation decided to visit the University. After touring the university compound including the library, where thousands of books of all disciplines of study laid, and having relating what they have seen at Amoud to their communities back in Togdher, the emotion of these visitors moved to a degree beyond the reader’s imagination. Shedding tears rolling on their cheeks, some of these goodwill ambassadors appealed to us (as students) to go with them to their regions so that they could let their communities know how some parts of the country were already harvesting the dividends of peace. Now after almost seven years of functioning, Amoud along similar institutions of higher learning are playing a pivotal role in the reconstruction programs as they are producing the much-needed qualified staff in a number of sectors. This is, however, just a fraction of the contributions that Amoud University made to not only Somaliland community but also to all Somali speaking communities in the greater region of Horn of Africa. Finally, the management team of Amoud University and those who helped it go through the difficult times and countless constraints will have a permanent place in the hearts and minds of all those who believe that education is an important ingredient of any country’s development. They would be remembered for the milestone and the turning point they have initiated. Abdirahman Adan Mohamoud Borama, Somaliland E-mail: Abdirahmanadan@hotmail.com 1. Abdirahman Adan Mohamoud, a graduate from Amoud University is a freelance writer. Currently, he is the manager of Rays Hotel, Borama. He is also an Assistant Lecturer at Amoud University.

  18. It is funny how some people want to blanket everything under clanism. These same people do not recognise and will always turn a blind eye to the good intentions that Somaliland is doing in its hard efforts as to moving away from clan system and into a more democratic system. In their demented way of thinking, these people equate the fact that the majority of Somaliland's population belong to one clan then it must be like Puntland which is officialy a one clan system and hence why Puntland claims the portions that clan resides in SOOL and SANAAG as part of their clan enclave. On the contrary, Somaliland recognises that its a a multi-clan society and thus its future lies not on clan based system, rather on multi party democratic system where clanism has no place and each person is treated indivitually under the rule of law. However, like the legendary Bull from Doolo (Dibiga Doolood) which is said to hear nothing but bad news, and sees nothing but evil, the Nay sayers will continue to turn a blind eye to the genuine effort that Somaliland is taking. Will that matter to Somaliland? You bet not.
  19. ^^Thanks to Afweyne and his criminal enterprise. Somaliweyn nationalism is not wounded, it is as dead as a Dodo.
  20. Qudhac – the trouble is if we have neither the recollection nor the wisdom to appreciate the past, what is one to make of the future. Discussions of this nature had come and elapsed with little use to the many in your school of learning [Riis ala boys where dust rationing rather than credence is the norm, for you could not possibly be of Sh Baraawe with which the latter could be identified], therefore I shall recount not the tale of the claim you so ridiculously regurgitate as if reading from the old book with inscription from the dear son of Sacdiya. You see my dear lad, whether the regions in question are barren or otherwise, it is not a question for you, nor is it for the badly trained foot soldiers clad in their ill-fitting Kakis and badly oiled AK7s covered in lice from tip to toe swamping the pasture land causing endemic environmental damage; nor is it for Col Cadhays who is trying to reason with the wolves in the wee hour. Mind you Col Cadhays is on home territory, and in case you are wondering, Col Cadhays’s goal for opting for that line of reasoning is one that shall remain beyond your comprehension – hint Qabridahare, and the year was 1981 - ask adeer Siilaanyo, he is privy to it. It is however for the locals whose decision had been “nay†from the get go. Let me lower the scale and give an instance lest the above lines are too complex for the nubile mind that is of yours and for the message to hit home - the day I trump on your doorstep in Hargeisa with instructions as to how to form an opinion or which ideology you should pursue, I ask of you to blow my brains out, cowboy style. Now, do not you reckon the same should apply in your case? ehehehee Without Gen. Nuux Taani's permission do you in your wildest of dreams think Col. Cadhays would have set foot in Adhicadeyse (his home territory as you put it)?? And to clearly show who is the BOSS around here, the SL army displays all of its best hardware on top of the hills that surrounded the area. What did he do in return?? He was laughing out load and enjoying the moment. ah... I wonder if that reality dances with your demented line of thinking. ehehehe
  21. War ileen angaa wax aragnay. They say, people talk;Dogs bark!!! Dear Sumarai, wonder what made you go ballistic?? ehehehe Was it the 25 billion shillings (eventhough I gave the benetif of the doubt and multiplied it by 10), or is it something else? Puntland’s on the other hand for the year in question[2005] was 235 billion shSho where the rate stood around 9,000 a shelling to the usd (give or take). If one consults the exchange rate and does the conversion to the usd, it stood at 24.4 million . This is the same person who just wrote few posts away in this very same thread that the "annual budget for Puntland in 2005 was 20(2) million (usd). Somaliland’s was 22(5) million (usd) or thereabouts in the same year". Ilaahaw na dil oo ha na cadaabin... again I leave it for the SOL readers to reach their own conclusion about this guy, for I am lost of words. Truely a sad example of the old Somali adage that goes: "DH___ inta aanad DH____ ku odhan, ayay ayadu DH____ kugu tidhaa"... you can fill in the blanks for me, dear Sumarai. PS Btw, you seem like you never read the pdf file I provided in my second post. For if you did, it would have saved you the shame making up these figures. Please do now and lets know about the last time the Somalia shillings reached anything close to 9,000 to the dollar. In 2006, Puntland’s projected budget as submitted a couple of days ago to the Parliament for approval was 250 billion soSh where the exchange rate is approximately 9,800 to the usd (give or take); therefore with the conversion, the annual budget for 2006 is a 25.5 million usd. again... no further comments here... As for Somaliland budget and my reference to the 15 million dollars, I have my sources. ps I will do the honorable thing, and let the nomads here know all that is about (including commentary and analysis) the 2006 Somaliland Budget, when it comes out any moment now. I expect the same from you sxb. Don't disappoint me.
  22. Caaqil si fiican ayaad u hadashay runtii, laakin kan la baxay Alle-u-baahne (I wonder who doesn't need Allah?? cajiib), waa dadka la yidhaado: Dusha ka miskiin, hoosta ka daalim!! kuwa ugu xun. Laakin, wadada uu soo maraaba waa u mubaax, hadii uu harag diimeed soo gashado, hadii uu harag Somalinimo soo gashado, iyo hadii uu mid qabiil soo gashado waa isla lafihii waxa ka hooseeya. Nothing more!! Having said that, contrary to what the Daalims here propagate, Somaliland is not about Qabiil. It is rather about the reclaimation of a lost nation. We all know, that dadka rer Somaliland, in aanu jirin qof uga sheekayn kara wax "midnimo" tahay. They know it, they been there, and they just didn't like what they saw. Munaafaqad xun oo dad sooc ahi ku shaqaystaan ayay midnimo u danaysaa. Taasi waa waxa maanta ina wada dhigay qurbaha ee qaxoontiga inaga dhigay. Marka, we have two choices here, to make the same mistake all over again, or, sidii laka ahaa ha lagu kala joogo. The Somaliland people, waxay doorteen oo dan moodeen inay lasoo noqoshadooda madaxbanaanidoodii sida dhibta yar ay ku lumiyeen, tahay shay ubadkooda iyo ayagaba dan u ah. Now, qofka taas ka soo horjeeda, waa qof dan Somaliyeed rabin, oo doonaya in Soomaali waligeed siday tahay ahaato. Taasina wax dadka reer Somaliland u cuntaamaya ma'aha, ninka Somaliland diidani waa nin habeen madow indha cadeeyey, isaga ayaa iska cadeeyey. Somaliland dadka reer Somaliland ayaa go'aankeeda leh, ilaahay ka sokow, ruux kale oo uga habranayaan aduunkan ma joogo.
  23. Sxb the difference between you and me is that, anigu qofka i caawiya waan qiraa oo waxaan idhaa thank you. Laakin adiga?? Sidii Bisadda inta libiq ka siisid ayaad inkirtaa. Cajiib As for xamaalka, ninkii waligii wax xamaali jiray ayuunba maantana xamaali doona. No problems there. Anigu booka iyo qalinka igu eeg. I will be counting kow, laba sadex joonyadood while chewing my leaves.
  24. ^^Maxaa hoos kuu soo celiyey, sowdigii Somalinimo iyo heerkaa taagnaa?? ehehehehe@ Sumarai Runtu ragga ma dishee way ka nixisaa Ma adiga mise websiteyadda, iyama ayaanu rumaysana?? waa yaabe  Let me put these in clear terms for you sxb: 1. Puntland ayaa ka revenue badan Somaliland cid kaa asmici maayo 2. Puntland ayaa ka Civil Servant (civilian public workers) badan Somaliland, taana kaa asmici maayo 3. Puntland ayaa ka ciidanweyn Somalilandna kaa asmici maayo. Now that being said, can you explain to us, why Puntland was unable to pay its melitias for the third year running??? Why would the Puntland civilservants take up arms and abduct the Puntland Bank officials along with their moneybox?? Why would ragtag melitias block access to Bosaso Port every now and then demanding their salaries?? Sxb, ma adaa walaan mise cadan ayaa laga heesaya?? Sxb hadii ay Somaliland sidaa ahaan lahayd oo maalin walba khasnadda lacagta askari baabuurka debadiisa ku ridanayso, I would be so ashamed and wouldn't be in this thread with you. Laakin adiga?? Indho adaygna way dhaaftay, INDHO BIR would be a better word. ehehehe My friend, we all know Bosaso Port is Puntland's main breadwinner, the rest account not that much. And if we are not kidding ourselves, we are well aware of its limited capacity in terms of generating income. So, unless you are telling us here that Puntland raises other revenues from some form of underground sources like Human trafficking for instance or nuclear waste deals etc, there is no way Bosaso Port alone will be able to fetch anything even half of the figures you provided. Save us the BLSHT sxb.
  25. If you have a teenage bro or sis or know someone who has, specialy if the teenager is between (13-15 for girls) and (17-19 for boys), then these teenagers really need to be sent home, whether its in Mogadisho or In Hargeisa, it doesn't matter. Even one year that they stay there will help them discover themselves and their roots. I know so many kids who were sent back home and when they came back, they had focus in life and they knew what they were expected of them. These were the same kids who were perhaps starting to smoke or skip schools or were in their early stage in taking the wrong path.
