I don't think the Ethio will leave Somalia all together but if they left Mogadishu alone or at the very lease decreased their number in Mogadishu itself, that will have a significant impact on the puppet regime. One of the most obvious thing that will happen in such a scenario is that, the TFG will start moving out of Mogadishu and will go to where ever the Ethio army might still have control over e.g. Baydhaabo etc. On the other hand, Mogadishu will become lawless as many actors try to vie for power and the warlords make a return. Already, Xaaji Muuse Suudi is in charge of his stronghold Karaan and there is more chance that other warlords will return to their strongholds. But over time, these warlords will be chased out of Mogadishu in a similar upraising like the 2006 one.

^^ Some people do actually underestimate SL's resolve. There is no doubts at all the SL army will cripple the PL melitia anyday, anytime and anywhere. But the thing is, it is not always a good idea to try and win battles in the field. Any warlord with no purpose can fight a war, but what is the gain when its at the expense of one's political end game? The political war of winning the hearts andd minds of the locals is more important for SL then chasing few melitia from Bosaso and capturing more POWs. In any case, for your information, the army just withdrew from the Port town but it is still stationed not very far.

In SOmaliland, Kulmiye Party is perhaps the most democratic and open and inclusive of them all parties. At least, that is what we have seen of them so far. If they win the next elections and bring those values to the governance structures of the country, it will have a huge impact in the day to day lives of all the people. Imagine, a government that is open about its accounts, is inclusive in its thinking process and policy making. A government which encourages freedom of the press and reacts to the concerns of the general public. That is a dream government that Somaliland is yearning for. UDUB's shrewd and close-knit politics is not going to advance SOmaliland into what it really wishes to become in 20 or 30 years from now.

^ very much right. There is a long way to go in as far as democracy in SL is concerned. In particular the education of the leaders as well as the common person about how democracy works and should work. It is understandable though, knowing the fact that these people the only type of governance they experienced was either the dictatorship of Siyad Barre or a subsequent flavour of that regime's way of leadership. It will take a long time till the leaders understand that they are accountable to the people and that the governance is not a private enterprise but a public institutions that belong to the people. But as the Chinese say, a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step. Hopefully, SL will one day get to a stage where both the leaders and the people understand their obligations and work for the betterment of the country and the people.

Hargeysa, Somaliland, June 21, 2008 (SL Times) – The International Republican Institute (IRI) officially opened on Thursday a new office in Hargeysa, the capital of Somaliland. The International Republican Institute is a non-profit, non partisan organization dedicated to advancing freedom and democracy worldwide by helping to support civic institutions, open elections and good governance. At a reception held at the Mansoor Hotel in Hargeysa attended by senior members of the Somaliland government, members of the Somaliland parliament, party officials, social activists, members of the press and other guests, the Speaker of the Somaliland parliament, Mr Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi welcomed the opening of the new IRI office in Somaliland. In a his brief remarks at the ceremony, Speaker Abdirahman Mohamed stated that IRI has always played a significant role in the democratic development of Somaliland and by opening an office in the country has shown its support of the country's democratic credentials. Speaker Abdirahman Mohamed concluded his remarks by pledging the support of the people of Somaliland towards IRI's efforts in the country, and encouraged the people of Somaliland to safeguard and maintain the stability which has made Somaliland a beacon of hope in a volatile region. The IRI director for East Africa, Mr. Ted Levassiur also spoke at the ceremony to mark the opening of the new IRI office in Hargeysa. Mr.Levassiur outlined recent co-operation between Somaliland and IRI including the historic presidential and parliamentary lections in 2003 and 2005 respectively. Somaliland weighs military option to release German hostages 5 Jul 5, 2008 - 7:06:56 PM HARGEISA, Somalia July 5 (Garowe Online) - Authorities in Somalia's northern sub-state of Somaliland are contemplating a military option to release a German couple kidnapped by suspected pirates last month, sources told Garowe Online. Somaliland troops in the region of Sanaag where the kidnappers are keeping the hostages have been making irregular maneuvers in recent days, according to locals. Heavily armed soldiers are standing guard at checkpoints in and around the hostage-holding site, despite a recent appeal by traditional elders for all troops to withdraw from the area to ease talks with the kidnappers. Last week, Sanaag clan elders called on Somaliland and the neighboring region of Puntland – both of which claim ownership over Sanaag – to withdraw their respective forces from the region. Locals reported that Puntland security forces had withdrawn to the port city of Bossaso, but Somaliland soldiers led by Sanaag native Gurey Osman Salah have not moved. A clan elder who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Garowe Online that the presence of Somaliland forces in the area is leading to "more tensions," especially in light of unconfirmed reports that as many as 150 Puntland soldiers have now joined forces with the kidnappers. So from that background, lets say the 15% from his point view would actually translate to at least 50% to an impartial observer. Anyways, welcome back Munsa.
