  2. @Abwaan: Marne waad iga cabsiinee marne waxaa i dhahee waa safe @wire: Keep this thread in mind in September iA, I will have updated my own experiences by then iA. @Carafaat: Thanks for the tip on Turkish Hamaam, though from brief googling it doesn't look very female-appropriate indeed. @Narniah: Thank you for your reply! I absolutely loved reading it. I could feel your excitement and love for the place I even made my sister read it! You managed to give a thorough description in such a - relatively -short reply I can honestly say that I know absolutely nothing about modern day Turkey. It's never been a country I've been dying to visit, but I'm really glad I started this thread here, as reading your experiences is making me more & more excited. Though I'm really curious: how is it possible that Abwaan saw a lot of Somalis whilst Narniah met none? I'd love to meet Somalis in Istanbul. Escpecially tourist or expat Somalis!
  3. Hey my fellow Somalis! I'm going to Turkey next month inshaAllah for a few weeks and was wondering if there are any SOLers in Istanbul (or have been to). I know it's a long shot, but since I've never been before and don't quite know what to expect, I though I'd ask here I'd mainly like to know about the level of racism, safety etc. I'll be travelling with my older sister and her son. If you live in Turkey, let me know and maybe you can take us for a little tour. Thanks! 5

  5. I'd love to. I probably wouldn't be living there 365 days of the year but something like 30-60 days a year iA. Anybody here knows "Grand Designs"? Would be cool to build a cool modern house iA and not get it looted. I think it's beautiful that so many of you have all these dreams mashaAllah! Long live Somalia!
  6. Lol @ Alpha Blondy. Bonnie Greer is a pretty woman for her age. And lol@ pseudo intellectualism
  7. Lol Bob. Always looking on the bright side
  8. GaroweGal;814801 wrote: Some not so pretty looking Somali brothers on this site LOL. The only good looking black male celebrity is Shemar Moore. Lol.... Shemar Moore is a good looking fella, but I prefer Laz Alonso. There isn't any black celebrity that I look like. Bizarrely I've gotten (black and young version of) Uma Thurman a couple of times, though I don't see it. A person I definitely wouldn't mind people confusing me with is Zoe Saldana :D:p She's just so pretty <3
  9. Age is not a problem, I wouldn't mind a scientist who was 5-10 years younger than me (provided I was in my mid-30s or older). But I would mind nin shaqala'aan no matter his age.

Pay close attention because here we have a perfect example of the "coconut syndrome". A black person defending a white man's right to be "obnoxious, 1diotic and even racist" to his kind. That's all folks.

Reminds me of the film "The Grey"! Pretty awesome, thanks for sharing! And keep them coming!
  12. All I see is some hardware upgrades that they could have easily put in previous model. No real innovation. A variation of the Light Bulb Conspiracy?

  15. Garnaqsi;800072 wrote: Goodness me, this is one of the worst articles I've read in a while. To say actors like Adrian Lester have won prominent Hollywood roles after having suffered set backs in here is completely inaccurate. Adrian Lester took roles that most British actors only dream of and the only Hollywood he had that I remember was one that was actually 'stereotypical' and was largely about the issue of racism. I agree. The whole article reads like it was written by an intern.
  16. Next person who claims Somalis are mixed with Arabs, be warned: you will be cyber punched! Spreading silly cadaan-jaceel lies will not be tolerated. We got the quruxda from Allah swt, not from Arabs. Original creation, babe.
  17. After a certain age... I don't think one should be so concerned with CN. Unless they pay you. Besides, every generation thinks the next generation has everything worse. Just... let go. My niece loves Tangled, refused to see Lion King 3D because it didn't look so cool. That broke my heart, but... whatever! I liked it. As a kid. Kids today are different.

  19. Anybody noticed she has a tattoo on her right hand? Badass! Narniah, she probably doesn't care because she's making money from people wasting their time watching her videos. The joke's on us! Still, if she was around 18, I would tip her off to MTV's I USED TO BE FAT show. (If you're not aware of the show and are turned off by just the title, let me tell you that it's not a malicious show, quite the contrary)
  20. Narniah;794916 wrote: The best things in life are free. "...but you can give them to the birds and bees, I want MONEY!" EDIT: I think everything has a price. Even Heaven has a price, though it ain't money. Nothing is free and sent down to you (except the noble Quran), so yes, everything has a price wheather its hard money or just plain good ol' hard work. Do people have a price? That's a different question (and one you probably meant).
  21. I had a racist Bengali friend. He just didn't like black girls. Luckily I didn't find short Bengali guys attractive either. We hanged out, skipped classes, catched films. Of course it's possible for guys and girls to be just friends. Well, maybe old men like Ngoge can't see that... EDIT: Having said that, I do have to agree to some extent that in most cases (not all!), it is true, guys and girls don't make good friends. Personally, I don't mind having male coworkers or acquaintances but I wouldn't be BFFs with a male any more at this age. And truth be told, I'd hate it if my future significant other had a close female friend who wasn't related to him. Summa summarum, it's possible for men & women to be just friends but it's not very common.

    Dream JOB

I'm doing what I dreamt about doing when I was a pre-teen. In many ways I'm doing my "dream job", but the sad thing is, you get too busy to stop and appreciate it. You want more ("ok if I get to THIS point THEN it really is a dream come true" - only the line gets moved further and further each time). The glitter, unicorns and rainbows fade away and the "dream" becomes an everyday reality that only excites others. "Dream job" becomes like picking up your mail. The only difference is, you become so involved with your work that little else interests you, and you risk alienating your oldest friends and even some of your family members. Which isn't very healthy for relationships...
  24. Al-Miskiin;714728 wrote: Bal adoo raali ah soo akhri my whole post. Anigu qof muslim ah baan ahay, Supermodel uma aqaani art iwm. Sorry. You came across as someone who has little to zero appreciation of art. Why? Because here is what you wrote: " even call it a "talent" is a problem for Somalis in general and especially our young Somalis who might bee looking up to these kind of guys, instead of other decent role models(role models like sister Fatima from the "Oxford ‘off Limits’ to Star Black Pupil" thread)! Or other role models, like our prophets, Sahaba, our famouse muslim scholars, doctores, mathematicians, scientist Engineers etc. " If you had any appreciation or knowledge of art, you would have provided role models from within the world of art, not science. In fact, the fact you only mentioned science-related (excl. religion) professions in a thread entitled "Somali Art & Entertainment" says a lot. Lose the "science vs art" mentality. Both can be good.
  25. You know, in Somalia, the only place an artist can "make it" is the run-down wall of a maqaahiyad. So you can't really blame Al-miskiin for his limited knowledge and appreciation of art. Having said that, I am happy that Somalis are making it big in the international scene, however my only concern is: why are none of the girls wearing hijab??? I'd personally like to see more Somali sisters make it big without compromising their beliefs. Right now, it seems that the message that's coming through is: "you can make it hadaad qamaar la'aan tahay". Obviously, that's unacceptable. We are in dire need of more wonderful, successful & accomplished hijabi sisters! Many people think girls wear hijabs because they are afraid of their families... Well, I think many girls are afraid to wear the hijab because they are afraid of what Western others think and would rather just fit in, but... why would you want to fit in when you were born to stand out? P.S. I absolutely love Abdi Farah's smile, mA! What a happy spirit!
