The 74-year-old, nicknamed King Cobra because of his quick temper and sharp tongue, ousted his homeland’s ruling party after rising from an early career as a platform cleaner and porter with Britain’s nationalised rail company and also as an assembly worker in several factories here. Mr Sata has rarely spoken about his time in the UK but is known to have travelled to England after being born in 1936. The polling last Tuesday was marred by violence and at least two people died. Defeated Rupiah Banda’s Movement for Multi-party Democracy party had ruled since 1991 but Mr Sata’s Patriotic Front won by 43% to 36% after appealing to the millions of poor Zambians who have not benefited from recent economic growth. The new president called for peace between rival parties. He said: “We should not allow violence to separate us. The gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider and we need to address that. Now is the time to unite and build tomorrow’s Zambia together. “I stand by the promise to change Zambia within 90 days.” Mr Sata had returned to his homeland and entered politics shortly before the ex-British protectorate of Northern Rhodesia won independence in 1964, becoming Zambia.
