  8. Somaliland nation cannot handle corrupt Politician to rule it, we see in the era of UDUB regime 2000-2010 what they did to Somaliland nation. Somaliland had made a lot of success under past president silaanyo administration and later elect his successor MUSE BIHI as the Somaliland president 2017. Somaliland surprises the world and earn global praise after the nation elect MUSE bihi. In the other hand the opposition party leader waddani Abdirahman irro his campaign sign is “although I can usurp power with tactics, I say elect me without any hesitation!”!!. Therefore Somaliland nationals won’t allow the incumbent president to handpick a corrupt junta to rule Somaliland for the next generation. Our mentality guided by moral principles. It is our morality to tell us what is right or wrong. Morality means manner, character, and proper behavior. To begin with the subject article, in the event any person who knew IRRO started from the days of Somalia siyad barre regime in 80’s and till today, they will respond in a same manner which is IRRO a person difficult to understand, difficult to compromise, he believes that, he should all the right while others deserve no right. That’s why he lost the past elections. The entire Somaliland living in the region’s are united against IRRO today in view of his attempts to divide his nation who are brothers, sister, aunts, cousins, father in laws, mother in laws, sister in laws, brother in-laws and tens of types of other kinship. I am in the opinion that above 95 % of Somaliland society share with what I have explained in the above, the nation elect a leader like MUSE BIHI because they know the oppositions what they up to, H.E. MUSE BIHI truly believes in democratic ideals, not the pithy lip service paid to it by detractors. A man not only highly educated in the Western discourse, but a true wise man in the best tradition of our people. A man his entire life is a testament to honesty and decorum and decency. MUSE BIHI he was the choice and this nation and beat IRRO by 80,000 vote, Somaliland needs a new paradigm. Somaliland needs a new dynamic Politian in order to move on and that’s why they elect H.E. MUSE BIHI. IRRO turned out to be a great chief “Aqil” a failed national leader since he ruled the parliament 2005. He permitted his own cronies to wallow in the same troughs. Corruption undermines democracy and good governance by flouting or even subverting formal processes. Corruption erodes the institutional capacity of government if procedures are disregarded, resources are drain off, and public offices are bought and sold. Corruption undermines the legitimacy of government and such democratic values as trust and tolerance. Political corruption is the use of power by government officials for illegitimate private gain. An illegal act by an officeholder constitutes political corruption only if the act is directly related to their official duties, is done under color of law or involves trading in influence. To be honest no buddy knows what he wants IRRO ?sometimes his tactics and nothing but double face policy, his party make problems and standoffs to delay any upcoming elections, and we saw back in 2015 !. IRRO always scare to run in any election and that’s what happens in 2017 when he fails. IRRO today controlled by others in his destroy party seems not fit to rule or to be the next president. The Somaliland people have come a long way in the past two decades. Somaliland is also a sea of calm in a region infested with terrorism, famine and clan and tribal driven conflict. IRRO is nothing but broken promises, he came short on people’s expectations. He failed to rule the parliament and become weak nothing but (pay me) to pass a law!. majority of Somalilanders went for a change and they deserve for a better life .the Mr. speaker IRRO well not be that choice for the next term 2022, Indeed it is the time for a new generation to take the helm of Somaliland leadership and supported ,that road is MUSE BIHI current president will plan it . and IRRO needs to resign and send himself back to his retirement home in Finland!.We all waiting for his resignation from the waddani and make a new candidate in the future!. 9. A Somali military court on Tuesday sentenced a man to death after finding him guilty of carrying out an October truck bombing that killed over 500 people, the deadliest attack in the nation’s history. Colonel Hassan Ali Shute found 23-year-old Hassan Adan Isaq guilty of heading the Shabaab terrorist cell behind the October 14 terror attack. He also sentenced a second man to life in prison in absentia for being a member of the Al-Qaeda aligned group and procuring the vehicle used in the attack, while a third was given three years in jail for allowing the truck to pass freely through a roadblock. Two others were acquitted. “The first defendant is sentenced to the death penalty, life imprisonment for the second defendant who is absent, and three years in army prison for the third defendant,” Shute ruled. No date was given for the execution, which will be by firing squad. The huge truck bombing in a busy part of the capital Mogadishu triggered outrage around the world. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the government and experts blame the Shabaab. AFP
  10. Sheikh Mohammed Yusuf – pictured speaking in the community about FGM Every Friday, Sheikh Mohammed Yusuf goes to Goof Mosque in the district of Erigavo, Somalia, where he is Imam. After noon prayer, he leads the Friday Khutbah, a sermon for the community. Sheikh Mohammed Yusuf is a well-respected figure, and when he speaks, people listen. One Friday, Sheikh Mohammed Yusuf stood up, took the microphone, and started a conversation about female genital mutilation (FGM) – a subject considered taboo to speak about by most Somali men. Among girls between 15 and 19 years old in Somalia, 98% have undergone FGM, a deeply rooted traditional practice widely accepted as both physically and psychologically harmful. The majority of girls are cut before they turn 14 years old. Men in the country simply do not talk about FGM in public – and many do not even discuss it with their wives. Yet they expect women to take responsibility for ‘cutting’ their girls before they can get married. To help tackle it, CARE has been organising seminars and workshops for 70 religious leaders, including Islamic scholars, across Somalia and Somaliland. The aim of these workshops, which are funded by the UK Department for International Development, is to review and analyse religious texts, such as the Qu’ran, and examine their stance towards harmful practices such as FGM and early child marriage or forced marriage. After taking part in one of these seminars, Sheikh Mohammed Yusuf said: To abandon FGM was inconceivable to us because we thought it was a religious obligation. After several workshops, seminars, and research, we started to change our perception of these customs and accepted that it could be subject to debate. We were cautious. We really wanted to know if female circumcision was a religious obligation. It was then confirmed that FGM was harmful to women’s health and that it was not at all obligatory in Islam. Feeling a deep personal transformation, he decided to instruct his congregation about the terrible impact of FGM on women and girls. It was the first time Sheikh Mohammed had ever spoken on this subject – and he did it in public. Not only does FGM have nothing to do with Islamic religious obligations, he said, but due to how harmful it is to women’s physical and mental health, it should in fact be prohibited by Islam altogether. While the Imam was talking, most men in the mosque left, leaving just a handful of younger men behind. At first, Sheikh Mohammed was disappointed. The first Khutbah against FGM hadn’t gone well. Had he done the right thing? But when he left the mosque, he found a large group of women outside, reflecting in silence. They had been listening carefully to his words, and started to thank him and praise him. This made him feel that he was surely headed in the right direction – and inspired him to start an ongoing campaign against FGM. Now, every Friday, he leads weekly awareness-raising sessions in his community on the rights of women in Islam. And people in Erivago are slowly starting to mention FGM in public. This is largely thanks to these workshops – because where respected figures like Sheikh Mohammed lead, the community follows. Men are now realising that FGM is not a religious obligation but a harmful, unnecessary practice – and they are being supported to make changes in their communities. Sheikh Mohammed said: Talking about FGM is very difficult, because for men it is a taboo to talk about these things. But I will continue to speak up. I feel it is my duty to educate my people about such awful traditional practices against women. Care Int’l

  23. Fadumo Mohamed (centre) and two other women sifting frankincense for export/Abdirahman Abdi Mohamed/ Fadumo Mohamed, 37, is thinking of going back to the IDP camp in Bosaso, where she lived nine years ago. She has been working in a company that exports frankincense, but business has reduced so drastically due to the drought that she can no longer be sure of taking home any money for the children. The frankincense-yielding boswellia trees that grow on steep hillsides and crags in the mountainous areas of Bari and Sanag regions of northern Somalia have suffered badly from the prolonged drought. Local men climb the hills early in the mornings to slash the bark of the trees to tap the aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes. The amount of resin they bring back has generally fallen by around three quarters over the past three years of drought. Fadumo, a single mother of seven, sits with other women ion the floor sifting dust of the chunks of dried resin, and sorting the pieces ready for packing for export. They are paid for the amount of frankincense they process – roughly $6.4 (180,000 Somali shillings) for a large sack. “Nowadays I only get work occasionally,” Fadumo told Radio Ergo. “Around 10 women sit and do the amount of work that used to be done by just two of us. We share the small income we get so everyone gets something to take home. Last year, Fadumo mostly went back home empty handed from the frankincense firm. She was forced to start buying food for the family from local stores on credit. She has not been able to pay her house rent for four months and her debts at the food stores amount to more than $300. Mohamed Samatar Yusuf, chairman of the frankincense exporters in Bari region, said unemployment has affected hundreds of women working in 23 small factories preparing frankincense. Only three of these businesses are still in partial production, all the rest have closed down. Around 80 per cent of the world’s frankincense is grown in Somalia. The aromatic resin is exported to Djibouti, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the United Arab emirates. From there it goes all over the world, especially to Europe and America, where demand for the essential oils distilled from frankincense has increased in recent years. Over-tapping of the trees to meet export demands combined with plagues of insects, and deforestation, have all taken their toll on frankincense production. But the ongoing harsh drought might have the most lethal impact yet on this 5,000-year-old trade. Duale Haji Yusuf has 400 frankincense-producing trees that used to bring in around 1,000 kg of the valuable resin a year. Last year, however, he harvested only 250 kg. The tress did not remain long in blossom and some did not flower at all due to the lack of rain. Duale used to count on making $7,000 a year from his trees, but now is lucky to get $2,000. He has to pay for school fees and all other needs for his large family of 13 children. Mohamed Samatar Yusuf said 110 shareholders in the 23 small factories last year exported frankincense worth $100,000. This was a fraction of the $500,000 earned from exports in previous good years. Frankincense has been second only to livestock in Somalia’s exports.
