During a visit to Ethiopia, Rex Tillerson has said the answer to violence in the East African country was greater freedom, and that the country should lift its state of emergency as quickly as possible. Speaking at a news conference in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Thursday, Tillerson said that the US recognized concerns over incidents of violence but “we do firmly believe that the answer is greater freedom.” “While we appreciate the government’s responsibility to maintain control … it is important that country moves on past the state of emergency as quickly as possible,” he said. Ethiopia declared a state of emergency in February to restore “law and order” after the prime minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, resigned suddenly. Although Ethiopia had looked like it was slowly opening up to allow more freedom for people who hold different opinions to the government, the resignation and emergency decree have triggered further political uncertainty and fueled strikes and shutdowns. Tillerson critical of China’s policy in Africa During the press conference, the US Secretary of State also repeated comments he made earlier in the week for African countries to ensure they don’t forfeit their sovereignty when they accept loans from China. China surpassed the US in 2009 to become Africa’s biggest trading partner – and its share of trade continues to grow compared to the United States. China also pumps billions into infrastructure projects around the continent, although these have attracted criticism for using Chinese labor and firms, and low-quality materials. Ethiopia is home to some of China’s biggest investments in Africa, from a railway to Djibouti that opened last year to factories and industrial parks – as well as the African Union headquarters, which Tillerson visited on Thursday. “We are not in any way attempting to keep Chinese dollars from Africa,” said Tillerson, whose visit to Africa is his first time since becoming secretary of state more than a year ago. “It is important that African countries carefully consider the terms of those agreements and not forfeit their sovereignty.” The chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, stressed at the same press conference that Africans “are mature enough to engage in partnerships of their own volition which will be useful for the countries and the continent,”. Tillerson was also asked (twice) during the press conference about the derogatory ‘s***hole’ remark that US President Donald Trump made about Africa in January. He refused to comment. For his part, Faki said Trump’s Africa remark was “of the past.” “The incident is behind us, the visit by the secretary of state today is proof of the importance of relations between the different parties,” he said. Others focus on business, US pushes security Tillerson’s five-nation, week-long tour of the continent is primarily focused on security issues. He is due to fly to Djibouti, host to military bases owned by the U.S., China, Japan, France, and Italy. Tillerson will then visit Kenya, a US ally in the fight against al Shabaab Islamist militants in Somalia, before traveling to Chad and Nigeria, which are also battling to contain Islamist insurgents. Just before midday in Hargeisa, Somaliland, the pace of life starts to slow. People head home for lunch and a rest, taking refuge from the hottest hours of the day. But a few iron sheet shacks on the side of the road are a hive of activity: For a few hours, until the heat of the sun starts waning, men sit in groups and chat, either at home or under the shadow of a tarpaulin. “Women just don’t have the time to sit around and talk,” says Amran Ali as she shakes her head. “They are wives, daughters, and on top of all of that, they have to bring money home. They have businesses to run.” Amran is the founder of Association of Women in Business (AWB), an organization that she started to be a voice for women in the business community. Photo credit: Callan Quinn “Women in Somaliland are often in business, because life won’t let you have only one job,” she says. “Women are the backbone of the economy. They are the ones who run the markets, they do all the menial jobs, but they are not getting enough profit, and they are very vulnerable.” Faisal, a member of AWB who helps women navigate the world of microfinance and banking, agrees: “Unemployment is generally very high, so women have no choice but to help their husbands. They have the resilience to look after the house and the children, plus go out to work.” Photo credit: AWB But according to AWB member Warda, who is responsible for the group’s education and training team, Somaliland’s culture makes it difficult for women to work in business. “Most people still have the mentality that business is better handled by men,” she says. “But I’ve handled it countless times,” she notes with pride. Soon after its inception more than two years ago, AWB acquired its own office, where members could meet and discuss the most pressing issues facing women entrepreneurs in Somaliland: how to balance domestic duties and business; how to access finance; and how to increase productivity and gain access to markets. “It is something we had never had before — a place to discuss our ups and downs,” says Amran. Photo credit: Callan Quinn One of AWB’s most successful projects has been the Promotion of Inclusive Markets program, developed by the World Bank and DAI. AWB specifically chose to work with milk vendors, who are overwhelmingly women from poor and often nomadic backgrounds. Despite working from dawn till dusk, they found that they barely made enough to feed themselves and their families. AWB looked at ways to properly handle milk to reduce wastage and to increase the level of hygiene from production to point of sale. “We have trained over 4,000 milk women, and we have met with government stakeholders, business people, and consumers to improve the market,” says Amran. One of the thousands of women who took part in the programme is Jinow, a 50-year-old milk vendor in Gibley. For years, she struggled to make ends meet and look after her large family: Sales were slow, and at the end of the day she would have to throw away liters of spoiled milk. Photo credit: Callan Quinn But since participating in an AWB training, Jinow’s business has picked up. “I learned how to store and handle the milk properly, and I got a small loan through microfinance to grow my business.” Now AWB is allowed to sit in Somaliland’s Chamber of Commerce — and they are a force to be reckoned with. “We are a group of about 40 women,” says Amran. “We are educated and speak all kinds of languages. We can go there and challenge men, and they listen to us.” One.Org

Somaliland needs a leader with sympathetic and merciful emotions, whose 1st priority at this current situation in Somaliland shall be to bail out and support the thousands of families from rural community, who lose all their livestock due to famine and are in a situation of misery & starvation in unrecognized IDPs; a leader enabling them to start their nomadic live again; a leader whose thoughts are always concentrated on the hardships and needs of the soldiers, the farmers, the teachers, the nomads, , orphans in the camps, the jobless youngsters fleeing from the country, the poor families under the poverty-line living in all Somaliland towns and villages, and the mothers struggling to feed their children with very difficult activities, and even the street children. Somaliland needs a heart-driven Intelligent leader with professional cabinet members, whose 2nd priority shall be to introduce monetary and fiscal policies to solve the Inflation crisis, to save his poor people from this economic crisis associated with the general increase of the prices of the common services and goods that we are within; to get rid of this long time staying financial crisis that caused our peoples’ lives to worsen day after day; a leader who is free from corruption, not stealing tax payer’s money; a leader with no tendencies to corrupt even a single cent; a leader who welcomes scrutiny, for scrutiny allows a good leader to be an even greater leader Somaliland needs a great leader who serves the best interests of the people and the country; a leader who keeps his word and does not lie to his people; a leader with integrity, one who says what he means; a leader who doesn’t make false beautiful promises, just to reach the chair; a leader who is not greedy to safe as much dollar as he can; while hundreds of thousands of his people are under mass starvation, hunger and at the edge of death due to the famine; while others are in the mid of high inflation that they can’t get properly one of the three meals in a day. Somaliland needs a leader who should always be open and tolerant to criticism from the public; not a leader who is afraid of his dirty hands to be revealed under heavy light; not a leader who is silencing the contrary opinion and dissent; because he only feels secure in the darkness; a leader who supports the media and true freedom of speech, not oppressor with censorship ideals; a leader who make decisions and agreements that can have great positive impact on the well-being of our nation and our people, not for his benefits; a responsible leader who will give high regard for morality & law abiding; a leader whose deriving joy is in serving for his people; a Leader who is willing to listen to the voices and needs of the common people and willing to represent them faithfully; a peacemaker leader, one who unites not divides. ”Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of your people.
