Politician wants to stop gender-based pricing Wed Mar 16, 2005 2:53 AM GMT Printer Friendly | Email Article | RSS TORONTO (Reuters) - Most women, accustomed to paying more than men for goods and services like clothes and hair cuts, simply shrug it off as part of life, but an Ontario legislator hopes to end all that. Lorenzo Berardinetti wants to brand so-called gender-based pricing a human rights violation and he has introduced a bill in the Ontario legislature to make the practice illegal. Berardinetti said on Tuesday he was shocked when he and his wife took clothes to a dry cleaners and she ended up paying more for similar items. "I get charged one price and she gets charged another price for virtually the same material," he said. Berardinetti said that opened his eyes to an experience women have long learned to deal with, namely higher prices for clothes, shoes, hair cuts and other services. "The bill would ... amend the human rights code in Ontario to make gender pricing discriminatory and it would also allow for penalties to be levied from C$2,000 to C$5,000 (870 pounds to 2,200 pounds)," he said. The bill -- "An Act to Prohibit Price Discrimination on the Basis of Gender" -- will be debated in the legislature in April in the second phase of a four-stage process toward a bill making its way into law. If it passes a final third reading, royal assent then sees it written into law.

Salaaamz Originally posted by runaway^virgin: Now, I totally disagree with the saying "you're what your friends are"!! that only applies when you spent your entire time with a certain person. [/QB] What about what it says in the hadith RV, "A person is upon the Deen of his khaleel (close friend), so look to whom you befriend." [Abu Dawud & Tirmidhee] You don't think that this hadith applies to those who you chat with, talk on the phone with, go out for lunch with , your coworker that u hangout with etc.... Please explain to me walaal, cause I am confused. And to the other nomads, have you forgetton about 'LOVING' SOMETHING for the sake of Allah and HATING something for the sake of Allah or is TOLERANCE the IN THING nowwww Fi Amanillah

SALAAMMMZ, Allah says, "And whosoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allah), We appoint for him Shaytaan to be a Qareen (intimate companion) to him." [43:36] "A person is upon the Deen of his khaleel (close friend), so look to whom you befriend." [Abu Dawud & Tirmidhee] 'Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger. Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend! He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Qur'aan) after it had come to me. And Shaytaan is ever a deserter to man in the hour of need'." Salaamz, Just wondering if any nomads, where ever u may be living in, see Black History Month "BHM" events and celebrations. Do they still hold BHM events in your schools and neighbourhoods? Do you think people give a two shingles about BHM anymore? I am asking this cause I just found out this morning that at work, they are trying to organize some speakers for BHM and I said to myself 'What for, ain't nobody care about Black History Month anymore?' Times have changed, if it ain't about MONEY and FAME, we ain't gonna show up. Salaamz, how islam is a tolerant religion when we have to believe that 5/6th of the human race alive at this moment will burn in hell forever. Tolerant religion? Tolerant of what? Promoscuity, Nationalism, Gender Confusion aka Equality, Science? Other religions? What is the basis of Tolerance and Rejection in Islam? Anyways, Walaal if you can do some research and try to answer these q's, you might be able to find some of the answers that you are looking for. You can always type in 'google' and do a search. Salaamz, Hey pass me the name and # and maybe I can sweet talk him but i also need his first 3 names and where he grew up (gotta do my background check on the Morgan Stanely brother ) But on a more serious note.... Its always good to see a muslim succeed in dunya but it usually happens at a certain price and detriment to their soul and akhira. Anytime I have seen a successful muslim businessperson whether they are Somali, Arab, Bakistani etc.,the same traits usually exist in them. What traits u might ask? Well you will have to observe that for yourself inshallah because it is usually the opposite traits of a mumin (frankness, gentleness, sincerity etc.). Its hard to find a pious, successful in the dunya, Muslim (Somali or no Somali!) Its true what the hadith says about you can't have both worlds (Dunya and Akhira). If you succeed for your dunya, then you jeopardize your akhira and if u give your life for the akhira, then you risk jeopardizing your dunya. Note: This is not meant to 'Hate' on anyones 'mobility' in the work world!!! Fi Amaniallah

Salaamz, Here is an argument for Polygamy from a Christian Minister POLYGAMY IS ILLEGAL 1Peter 2:13-14 requires us to be submissive to the authority, the government that God has put over us. Should a person practice polygamy when it is illegal to do so under the law? Shouldn't he be punished according to the law? Shouldn't a Christian register his polygamous marriage? In opposing God's commandment in the light of 1Peter 1:13-14, would a polygamous Christian be sent to Hell if he does not repent? Times and again, I have been confronted with such similar questions as above, especially from people who live in countries where the must-be monogamy mentality rules. It's time that I address it more thoroughly. I agree that it is right that one should submit to earthly authorities for they carry the task of keeping orderliness and peace over the people it governs, but they do not decide on what is holy and what is not. As a child of God, one must submit intelligently, knowing that the requirements of the law of man may not be the same as that of God's at a particular place or time. Thus we must differentiate and wisely fulfill man made laws that fluctuate with human votes and changing philosophies while we also do not violate God's divine laws that never change. What would you do if man's law conflicts directly with your understanding of God's law? To which do you submit? If you were living in the time of prophet Daniel, would you fall down and worship the golden Image, a law that King Nebuchadnezzar decreed that all men in his kingdom should live by? If you are now in a land where Christianity is prohibited, would you fulfill 1 Pet 2:13-14 by ceasing to be a Christian? Or perhaps like in Nepal, where the preaching of the gospel is prohibited, would you stop sharing the good news? What if Anti-Christ becomes the law of the day? BTW, do you know that 1 Peter was an epistle written to the Jews who were badly persecuted and dispersed throughout the Roman Empire because they violated the Roman Authority at that time? They were torn apart, thrown into lions' dens and burnt as torches. Do you know that the same Apostle Peter was crucified upside down for defying the authorities because of his beliefs that did not agree with theirs? YET, it is not my purpose for anyone to directly defy the law of the land even on any conflicting issues. I am not called to be a politician and I don't intend to be one. I am a minister of the gospel and I believe that this issue is not to be resolved by human force or might, but by the Spirit of God. Thus, my purpose of writing on Biblical Polygamy is at least 2 fold: First, as a believer and a minister of the Word, I must expose what I see as religiously erroneous and speak what I discovered, which is also being increasingly discovered by many other ministers around the world, that God is actually not against responsible Biblical Polygamy. It is then up to the people and the government concerned to accommodate what they see as good and just or to change what they see fit. Man's laws are not God's divine laws that cannot be changed. Man's laws can be changed according to what the government or the people see as good or beneficial at a particular point in time. And that was how polygamy finally became outlawed. For that was what they thought, that it was bad for the people, rather what they thought God says. But it was not so in the beginning. The Patriarchs and others practiced it and neither God nor Jesus spoke against it. In the modern times, advanced thinkers like the then Prime Minister of Singapore (still renown for his wisdom and foresight in the world today), now Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew even advocated polygamy as beneficial for dynamic nation building. Had he violated the law of Singapore by giving a suggestion such as this? I think not. Had he violated God's law? There are no scriptures against it. 1 Pet 2:13-14? Certainly not. And as a free citizen, I think I have the right to voice an opinion too. More and more such voices are heard, especially across the Internet. So we see a possibility of a reverse trend in nation building now and I do no more than providing sound scriptural backup for the Authority and the people to make the change if they deem fit. Second, as concerning the practice of it, I appeal to those who are already involved with other women to be responsible to look after these women and their children and not to forsake and discard them. The undeniable fact is, out there people are getting themselves involved, everyday. And they figured out that as long as the parties are consenting and that their spouses are not fighting it and as long as they do not register it, the law does not seem to be even against it. So you tell me, is it strictly illegal for a man to be having an affair with another woman in his life? As much as I do understand, the law in itself does not arrest 2 consenting adults sleeping together nor jail a man for looking after another needy woman and providing for her children, as long as he does not register or hold a ceremony for more than 1 marriage at a time. Oops, he may end up in jail for being responsible enough to do just that. Oh the law! Sigh?! But for sure, it is undesirable to multiply bitter women and rebellious children. Again Sigh! Let me stray off a little, in some countries, same sex marriages are now legalized. Do you subscribe to it in the light of 1Pet 2:13-14? Sigh! Sigh! Have you sinned if you do not agree to it? Back to our issue, so perhaps, we narrow the issue down to the fact that the law is against the registration and ceremony of another marriage at the same time. Well, many people today cohabit together without registration, and the law does not go around chasing them and putting them into jail as it would to drug abusers. Confused?! Man's law is to keep orderliness and implement the wishes of the people, not necessarily the requirements of God's divine law. Like I say, we must intelligently fulfill man's law and wherever it concurs with God's law, we must not violate it. That's how I understand 1 Pet 2:13-14 and the same applies to the entire Bible. Finally, as concerning God sending people to Hell, He will do so by judging people according to His Law and not according to man's law that changes from time to time and are sometimes inconsistent with His and often man's law does not measure up to His standard or understanding of holiness. Polygamy was never outlawed in Biblical times and 1 Pet 2:13-14 is very often quoted out of context. Oh, you can be sure God does not throw you into Hell just because you violate man's law when you litter or jay walk. Having given my answers, I have a question for Christian who adamantly use 1Peter 2:13-14 as the objection to the practice of some biblical truths that others are convicted of: Tell me, what would you do if your Christian faith conflicts with the law of the land? Would you compromise and give up Christ or would you stand firm? If you give Him up, you are a man pleaser and God will not know you any more. If you stand firm, you defy the law of the land. You don't have to answer me this question. Because it is not my intention to set Caesar against you or you against Caesar. You just need to answer God yourself. However, many times, I wonder why brethren bring in Caesar's name and pitch it against one another when they are supposed to dwell in the Word and to love and uphold another. I can understand a little how Jesus felt when He was tempted with such questions. Nevertheless, I have always assumed that all such inquirers are sincere, thus to the best I answer them. As for those who are truthful, take heed that it is not by human power nor by human might but by the Spirit and the Word that the work of God is to be done.

Salaamz, What do you think is being implied by making this 'IRAQ VOTE' take place? Do you think that it pokes fun at muslims? Yes/No and Why? You know the ammmeriiiicans are calling this the 'REAL VICTORY', actually its the western world thats calling it by the name. Basic problems such as electricity, food and water have not been resolved yet, but 'Elections' must go one never the less-right! Fi Amanillah

salaamz, It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu'minin, Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al-Khattab, radiyallahu 'anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say: "Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated In this hadith, the Rasul salallahu caliyhe waslim) uses an interesting Example to illustrate the Subject matter (Niyah/Intention). He salallahu caliyhe waslim) uses the example of HIJRAH/Migration/Moving to illustrate how that relates with Purity of Intention. The RASUL salallahu caliyhe waslim) could have useD the example of salat, zakat, hajj, fasting (all part of the 5 pillars), but chose not to do so. This truly shows how the Rasul (salallahu caliyhe waslim) spoke to his sahaba, his awareness of their Physchology and Disposition etc. Making a Hijrah is not one of the 5 pillars of Islam, yet SubhanAllah it is mentioned. Sura Imran, v. 14 Attractive to mankind is the love of the joys (that come) from women and offspring; and stored-up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded (with their mark), and cattle and land . That is comfort of the life of the world. Allah! With Him is a more excellent abode. It is possibly mentioned (and only Allah and his Rasul (salallahu caliyhe waslim) know best) because it is what Bani Adam craves and cherishs near and dear-A SHELTER/A HOME/LAND TO CALL YOUR OWN and often when something is near and dear to us, we often put our personal interests infront of All else, our personal interests above Allah and his rasul (salallahu caliyhe waslim), we all do it and the more and higher the stakes are, the more and more we put Allah and his Rasul (salallahu caliyhe waslim) in the back, back, backkkk, were our conscious is far asleep and our nafs is whispering to us 'Go Ahead, the road is Clear!' The point that I am trying to make here inshallah is don't turn your homes into Banks, don't purchase a home and live in it with the mixed intention of raising a family, buying it for your family etc. and profit making. For you can just rent a home and take care of your family just as well! What is happening nowadays is this new trend that a home is not a place to invest in Spirituality and building and a raising a family, rather it is seen as a CASH GRAP/MONEY MAKING SCHEME and when a HOME is built on the WRONG FOUNDATIONS, it often CRUMPLESSSS!!!   So inshallah unless the NIYAH is Clear and Pure and inshallah for ALLAH and his Rasul (salallahu caliyhe waslim), then don't purchase a home, just Rent it and I think that their is some Hikmah in some of the Ulama saying that its Haram to hold a mortgage. Salaamz, Something interest to share.... It was on the paper this morning, that 38 muslims heading back to the states, where detained and harassed b/c they had gone to this conference. Also, Shiekh Hamzaaa Yusufff, was harassed this passed tuesday on his way back to home from toronto. He told officals that he is an American Citizen and border officials told him something to the likes of that it doesn't matter what Citizenship u are at Border crossings. Apparently, if your muslim that is your Citizenship and all else is Irrelvant. Now if only most Muslims could view their association with the Deen like they are percieved-Muslim first and Americannn or Somliannn second etc. ........ I am a little confused about Baashi's posting of that article and his own postion. Its not clear to me but to each his own. Fi Amanillah

Tsunami strikes Somali coast...Hundreds feared dead
Khayr replied to General Duke's topic in Politics
Salaamz, you know this incident reminds me of some of the names of Allah such as 'Al Khafidh (The Abbasir), 'Al Haseeb (The Reckoner), Al-Muntiqam (The AVENGER) and the REALITY of the Qiyamaa. It as real as Sun that shines over our head during the day and the moon that takes us away from the darkness at Night...and the only sure thing in life is that we are going to Die, that you can BET on. If anyone doubted that the qiyaamah can't come in the Blink of an eye, then here is your proof that it can and that it is very real and scary and out right freighting, as many of these countries felt it a few days ago. Fi Amanillah -
Salaamz, This is soundinggg moreee and moreee like an EVANGLICAL or a UNITED NATIONS gatheringgg. Also, sounds like these speakers are more and more trying to accomodate to their 'MODERN' 'PRO-GENDER EQUALITY' 'PRO-LIBERALISM' crowd. Compromise is the STYLE of the day. The speechs, tones, themes, crowds (less Takbeers and more clapping (oops Hamza Yusuf said Takbeer is a Bidda, lots all Clap!) have changed greatly. By the way, what does someone like IMRAN KHAN, have to contribute to a MUSLIM CONVENTION? Fi Amanillah
