I have my reasons but that is beside the point. The Quran is the single uniting source for all muslims, from all sects and sub-sects. Consequently, if the Hijab is as important as you make it out to be, one would venture there be an injection in the Quran -- the unambigious words of Allah -- propounding its institution. But there isn't a single Quranic verse obligating Hijab donning. Therefore, to muslims like myself and others who don't believe the Hadiths are the words of Allah have more then a leeway in rejecting the Hijab, we have valid arguement and justification backed by Allah's words or lack of. Parallels btwn these writers and Bashir G. -T.F. and Munir P. critique muslims, so does Bashir G. -T.F. and Munir P. are considered as a 'Progressive muslims' and from what I have read of Bashir G.'s writing, he can be considered as a 'Progressive muslim' -Some folks consider T.F. to be an 'apostate', likewise some people consider Bashir G. to be an 'apostate'. But is one worse the other? Is it right to call them 'Apostates'?

Canadian Islamic Congress chairman Mohamed Elmasry was writing about Muslims who oppose Sharia law in Canada (including us), and reacting to Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty's September decision to end provincially sanctioned religious arbitration in family-law disputes. Stung by a political defeat he had not anticipated, Elmasry accused his Muslim opponents of being traitors to their faith -- an allegation that is read as a charge of apostasy, with all its ugly consequences. Elmasry is not alone. After labelling such Canadian luminaries as Margaret Atwood, June Callwood and Maude Barlow "Islamophobes," the proponents of Sharia have turned their attention to co-religionists. Through articles on their Web sites, speeches at Muslim conferences and, most recently, on the doorsteps of the Ontario Legislature, fundamentalists have declared that Muslims who do not support Sharia courts in Canada are opposed to Islam itself. The accusation that we are smearing Islam is without foundation. It is also dangerous. Such rhetoric is commonplace in the Muslim world, specifically in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt and Pakistan, where allegations of apostasy are used to silence critics and human rights workers. Such views have forced many Muslims to flee their countries of birth and take refuge in tolerant Western nations such as Canada. It is especially sad that Mohamed Elmasry and his allies have chosen the holy month of Ramadan to launch their broadside on progressive Muslims. There are other troubling indicators afoot. Late in September, at the Toronto book festival Word On The Street, another Islamic organization, The Islamic Council of North America, distributed free booklets written by Abu Ala Maudoodi, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. In the book, Maudoodi exhorts ordinary Muslims to launch jihad, as in armed struggle, against non-Muslims. "Jihad is part of this overall defence of Islam," he writes. "This supreme sacrifice is the responsibility of all Muslims." He then goes on to label Muslims who refuse the call for armed jihad as apostates: "Jihad is as much a primary duty as are daily prayers or fasting. One who avoids it is a sinner. His every claim to being a Muslim is doubtful. He is plainly a hypocrite who fails in the test of sincerity and all his acts of worship are a sham, a worthless, hollow show of deception." If such hateful and inflammatory literature can be distributed in downtown Toronto, one can imagine what is being said in the confines of private gatherings. Islamic extremists are taking advantage of Canada's liberal democracy to spread fascist ideology. Despite threats of ostracization, excommunication and hardship, we believe it is the duty of Muslim Canadians to defend the separation of religion and state in Canada. It is our obligation to ensure that "one law for all Canadians" is understood as the foundation of equality that we Muslims desire. It is imperative that we ensure Muslim women, queers, religious minorities, the disabled and the marginalized are protected. As for non-Muslims, they must answer this question: Why do they tolerate hate literature that promotes jihad against non-Muslims and labels progressive Muslims as apostates?     Salaamz, When I hear the word 'Ethics' used by people who built a society on LYING, CHEATING, KILLING, INTEREST and SELF-INTEREST, I am amazeddd at the hypocrisy and the self- inflicted blindness that westernersss have. Why the Nerve, the Gull.... :mad: SubhanAllah and here on SOL I see a sister that over the years has becomed transformed in her thinking and values Developing a personal ethic to live by was difficult, because I was brought up that either something is right or wrong. I’ve learned through experiences not everything is right or wrong – black or white. Did you forget about the Quran and Sunnah-that is your Minhaj/Standard to live by sister? :confused: Grey Areas? The Islamic Tradition is vast and the Ulama ya ukhti have scrutnized every ayat and hadith and are there to answer masalahs/questions that arise in the daily lives of a muslim. I don't think that you are alone in harboring these ideas and 'personal' feelings because many, many,muslims in the west think alike and are confused about their Islamic Identity. You are a part of the UMMAH, so therefor, no such things as 'PERSONAL ETHICS' exist because as a MEMEBER of the Ummah, you have ADAB/Modalities (Ways to Conduct yourself) that have been transmitted through the ISLAMIC TRADITION i.e. How to eat, sleep, behave in a lab, handle a sick patient etc. As a hadith of the Rasul (salallahu caliyhe wasilm) says it best: My sunnah is like the Arc of Noah, who ever follows it, will be saved from the flood of corruption that will follow. So ya ukhti, show some Pride in your Deen and stop thinking as an 'I' but as a a part of the Ummah of the rasul (salallahu caliyhe wasilm) and come in to 'NOAH'S ARC' with us and inshallah, there will be less confusion and corruption of the mind and more clearity and consistancy in our lives. Alle ubaahne said it well... Therefore, personal ethics must be framed by the supreme who knows for sure what best nurishes the self in living decent standards of life that are acceptable to every naturally sound-minded person,(fitrah-minded), I mean the common natural disposition of the human beings without exposing culture breeded ethics. Social theorists claim that to possess an identity a society must furnish criteria whereby its members can identify with one another, since their actions and attitudes towards one another will be different from those of outsiders. From this point of view citizens of the Ottoman Empire cannot be treated as a unique society in itself. The family of Sultans were Turkish as was the official language; the dominant ruling classes were Turks. At the same time there were peoples of different races, cultures and religions, though the majority were Muslims. The Western concept of the nation as a linguistic, racial and territorial entity was not known to the Islamic community of the Ottoman Empire. The primary basis of group identity was rather the brotherhood of faith within the religious community, reinforced by common dynastic allegiance. For peoples of other faiths the law and traditions of Islam, as well as the practice and polity of the Ottoman Empire, agreed in prescribing tolerance and protection for non-Muslims and in granting them a large measure of autonomy in their internal and personal affairs. Despite this identity problem the ruling elite were optimistic about creating a common identity for all citizens of the state. The 1839 Rescript of the Rose Chamber proclaimed the principle of equality for persons of all religions in the application of the law. It guaranteed security of life, honor and property. The Declaration of the Rescript was called the beginning of a new era, called reorganization or in Turkish, Tanzimat. In the political history of the Empire, Tanzimat and the intellectual leaders of that movement mark a sharp turn. Tanzimat intellectuals became main representatives of the intellectual life of the country, and even today are the point of reference for whoever criticizes or praises westernization. It was not the content of the Rescript--since not much in it was new--which intellectuals criticized in the press, but rather that it was not radical or it was made under the political pressure of European countries. In the years preceding Tanzimat many structural and visible changes had been made. Western style uniforms for officials become compulsory. State departments were reorganized according to western models. When French commercial law was adopted in its entirety only a weak protest came from the classical Ul ama, but the Tanzimat movement did not succeed immediately in putting it into effect. It was accepted, a few years later and in the eyes of the leaders of the movement, `Holy Law has nothing to do with it.' In Turkey this code was the first formally accepted system of law and judicature independent of Ulama. Despite the facts, in this period the general feeling expressed by the European press was that the ancient institution and structure of the Empire was barbarous and irretrievably bad. Only the adoption, as soon as possible, of a European form of government and way of life would admit Turkey to the rank and privileges of a civilized state. Did the Ulama fail us during these crucial times?

More than one decade after the French Revolution and in relation to an urgent political issue, the Ottoman Secretary of State had been instructed to prepare a report for the executive committee of state on the political situation in France. The interests expressed in this report were to take place in this country whose long tradition differed from that of France. It is known by all well-informed persons that the conflagration of sedition, and wickedness which broke out a few years ago in France, scattering sparks and shooting flames of mischief and tumult in all directions, has been for many years in the minds of certain accused heretics, and had been a quiescent evil which they sought an opportunity to awaken. In this way, the known and famous atheists, Volt aire, Rous seau and other such materialists, had printed and published various works consisting, God preserve us, of insults and vilification against the pure prophets and the great kings, of removal and abolition of religion and of allusions to the sweetness of equality and republicanism, all expressed in easily intelligible words and phrases, in the form of mockery. . . .4 The style and the manner of the statements in these passages may sound strange to a modern mind. But it must be remembered that the author belonged to a tradition based on religious values. In spite of the fact that it was another religion and tradition which had been insulted, he seems to have regarded it as dangerous for all religions. Probably for this reason he did not mention the execution of Louis XVI, which had such an effect on Christian Europe, nor even the abolition of the monarchy. The Ottomans had been familiar for centuries with republican institutions in Venice; there was nothing in the mere establishment of a republic to frighten them. What now alarmed the ruling circles in Istanbul was the secularism of the Revolution. Their fears were well founded, for the whole subsequent history of the Middle East has shown how great is the seductive power of a Western revolutionary ideology when divorced from Western religion. What were the main characteristics or consequences of the French Revolution which attracted Turkish intellectuals who in turn overturned the Ottoman Sultanate and the history of the nation? Under the Ottoman Sultans the ruling classes consisted of the military, the civil service and the Ul ama (traditional intellectuals). As the classical Ulama lost their position in the decision-making process of state affairs, a new group of intellectuals emerged. They either became ruling elite as the military or civil servants, or provoked and inspired new ideas among educated people. The ideas of the French Revolution took deep roots in the minds of a group of people who strove to build the country. What is blamed in the above report, gradually became the central themes of the intellectual's agenda; the notions of equality, freedom, constitution and parliamentary system occupied the literature. It should be noted that the first stage, a constitution and a parliamentary system, was achieved in 1876 but did not last long. Before this period there was a preparation stage in which intellectuals played their role as a governing class. They tried to do their duty by imposing upon the system an entirely inappropriate system of government and administration. There may indeed have been no alternative. Since traditional patterns of ruling and social life had, to a large extent, been destroyed, but there was no question of restoring the status quo ante.

Salaamz, Maybe some of the nomads in here who have some tafasiir collections i.e. Tabari, Suyuti,Qurtabi,ibn Kathir etc. can translate the tafasiirs of the Ulama on this point 'Women Witnessess' What is the view of the 4 Sunni Imams? You always have a 'CHOICE' sister??? :rolleyes: I heard that one the other day when I went to the doctor with the my wife and the practictioner was giving her leading questions as to suggest that cause she was a young muslimah and married too...that she was being ENTRAPPED cause words such as 'you always have a choice; no one can force you here; you can do what you want etc... Is that possible? :confused: If women against the Shariah can protest around the world, then can women for the Shariah and Islam protest for Islam and come together???   20. Salams, This is a good topic and one of the authors mentioned, Seyyed Hossein Nasr has written some books on Islamic Art. I suggest you read them and check for him on google or Amazon.com under books. When time permits inshallah, I will contribute with a more detailed response. Furthermore seyyed hossein Nasr states that “the whole beauty of the Muslim city is turned inward and not outward. The traditional Muslim houses, whether of the rich or the poor, are not that different from the outside. Therefore, excessive inequality in the public eye is prevented. The beauty of the house is to be found mostly within its walls. It is within the house that the joy and serenity which accompanies the worship of Allah and the enjoyment of His Bounties, especially the felicity connected with family life, are reflected.†If I am not mistake, the Muslim Home should be an Extension OF THe MASJID. Meaning that its decore should reflect the Muslim Soul, the Islamic Personalities that reside in that home. You can't have an abode that resembles that of a non-muslim and still seriously consider yourself MUSLIM-100%-YOU WOULD BE SUFFERING FROM IDENTITY CRISISSSS! Fi Amanillah

Salamz, I was grapping some coffee today and overheard a conversation by a dispatcher and some cops about MUSLIMAHSSS!!! :mad: Basically, they were saying that Muslimahs are Abused, that Islam is basically to blame to this b/c they are told to be 'HOUSEWIVES' and nothing else!!! Many are university graduates but 'Islam' tells them to be Housewives! (That was the gist of what I overheard, they didn't come out and say 'Islam' but always would allude to a 'THEY' which can't be other then Muslims and Islam. In anycase, my point is do you nomads think that Muslim women are being more and more and more viewed to 'Represent Negative Islam' i.e. Hijabs, Housewives, Homemakers etc. Whenever the topic of Islam and how great it is comes up, the issue of Women is brought up and I always say: WHAT MEASURE STICK ARE U MEASURING MUSLIMS BY: MODERNITY OR ISLAM??? Are Muslimahs really looked at as Easy Prey for NonMuslims to investigate and prope NEGATIVITIESSSS about Islam???? :mad: Fi Amanillah

Women Serving as Witnesses There has been much discussion on the issue of women serving as witnesses, as prescribed in the Qur'an. When addressing the assumption of financial debt, two witnesses are required - either two men or a man and two women (2:282). It is important to note that both of the women do not serve as witnesses. One woman serves as the witness and the second woman acts as a collaborator. Scholars have interpreted these verses and confirm that if women are equally knowledgeable, which is often the case today, then their evidence is equal to that of men (Rahman, major themes in the Qur'an - Chicago and Minneapolis 1982, page 49). b Women could be more easily coerced at that time and this safeguard provided protection to women serving as witnesses. c The need for two witnesses applies only to certain types of financial contracts. My Goals inshallah are: -Finish reading all 30 juzs (one juz per night) -Lose some weight -Pray tarweeh salats nightly (preferably at home) Inshallah, with some effort and persistance, I can accomplish these goals. Salamz, I was watching a documentary on Palestine the other night and israeli government officials and counter-terrerrrism experts were commenting on recent events in israeli-Palestinian relations. The israeeli officials and moossadd cohortss made some interesting observationsss about the Palestinians which is very dangerousss for muslimss. They said that they way to combat to the Islamisssts movements such as xhamas is byyyy giving them: PEACE and Prosperity and 'Semi-Autonmy' and without much effort they will have their allegiance (Palestinians) because at the end of the day that is what the average person wants- Peace, Prosperity and Autonmy. However this comes with the Promise to Disarm islamisssts and not to give them any legitimization. So how is this done? :confused:
