NAIROBI, Kenya — In a historic ruling and a first in Africa, Kenya’s Supreme Court nullified on Friday the re-election of a sitting president, ordering a new vote to be held within 60 days after finding that the balloting last month had been tainted by irregularities. The election on Aug. 8 was conducted peacefully and was largely praised by international observers. But David Maraga, the court’s chief justice, declared the result “invalid, null and void” after siding with the opposition, which had argued that the vote had been electronically manipulated to assure a victory for President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mr. Kenyatta, 55, was re-elected with 54 percent of the vote, easily surpassing the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff. His main challenger, Raila Odinga, 72, who had petitioned the Supreme Court to nullify the election, received about 44 percent, a difference of about 1.4 million votes. A parallel tally by domestic observers endorsed the official result. The decision came as a surprise, even to Mr. Odinga and his supporters, who had complained about election irregularities. A top election official in charge of voting technology was killed about a week before the election, and although the casting of ballots went smoothly, the electronic transmission of voting tallies was flawed, leading the opposition to assert that as many as seven million votes had been stolen. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, which was in charge of the vote, “failed, neglected, or refused to conduct the presidential election in a manner consistent with the dictates of the Constitution,” the court said. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/01/world/africa/kenya-election-kenyatta-odinga.html

Qat is the biggest social calamity of the Somalis especially Somaliland, yet no one is discussing to either eliminate or reduce the harm it causes for the fabric of our people Well said Galbeedi. Qat represents our opioid crisis and nobody has done anything meaningful about it since the days of old.

Trump is an idiot. He shouldn't be making threats if he is not going to deliver.

It is really shameful. Since Farmaajo has always been considered to be adopted son of reer dayniile (his wife, the PM he chose, etc), it is obvious this injustice was orchestrated from the top. 90K is not enough, plus the killer should have been brought to justice.

Hopefully this doesn't get cancelled again.

lol. Isn't politics all about masayr? Competition to strive for a better future, to have better resources for your consitituent, to challenge each other .... is all welcome as long as we stay away from violence.

Blue, good to see you after Ramadan. I lost half a pound in Ramadan. Not much but still better than gaining 10 lbs. lol I don't have belly fat that is in anyway visible. It is just that I am not 140 lbs of pure muscle anymore. I missed my college years. Those days I was hard at gym but the last few years I got caught up in the work-money cycle. Barwaqo is right. We need to half the rice/pasta plates. It is not healthy.

Muzzling Al Jazeera, the state-funded news station that has projected Qatar’s influence throughout the world, was high on the agenda when Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Yemen moved to isolate the tiny nation on June 5. Qatar’s critics accuse the station of supporting Sunni Islamist terrorism and Iranian ambitions. But Saudi Arabia is hardly innocent when it comes to spreading Islamist extremism or supporting terrorist groups. In reality, by attacking Al Jazeera, the Saudis and their neighbors are trying to eliminate a voice that could lead citizens to question their rulers. Al Jazeera was the prime source of news as the Arab Spring rocked the Middle East in 2011. That uprising ousted the military-backed autocrat Hosni Mubarak and led to Egypt’s first free election, which brought the Muslim Brotherhood to power. A loose political network founded in Egypt in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has renounced violence. The real reason it’s been labeled a terrorist group is that autocratic regimes see it as a populist threat. A military coup led by the current president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, overthrew Egypt’s elected president, the Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi, in 2013, as unrest under increasingly autocratic moves by Mr. Morsi grew. Mr. Sisi’s government has since moved brutally to quash dissent and eviscerate the Brotherhood. In 2015, an Egyptian kangaroo court imprisoned, but later released, three journalists from Al Jazeera’s English network on the grounds that the network’s reporting supported the Muslim Brotherhood. Now, a drive is on against Al Jazeera and free speech in the region. In late May, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates moved to block the websites of Al Jazeera and other Qatari media outlets. On June 7, Jordan closed Al Jazeera’s Amman bureau and stripped it of its operating license. Saudi Arabia followed suit the next day, closing Al Jazeera’s Riyadh bureau, then ordering tourist hotels to block “all channels from the Al Jazeera Media Network.” Al Jazeera is hardly a perfect news organization: Critical reporting on Qatar or members of Qatar’s royal family is not tolerated. But much of the rest of its reporting hews to international journalistic standards, provides a unique view on events in the Middle East and serves as a vital news source for millions who live under antidemocratic rule. Those are reasons enough for the monarchs and dictators attacking Qatar to silence Al Jazeera. And reason enough to condemn their action. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/21/opinion/misguided-attacks-on-al-jazeera.html

That is very very bad. Are people in that desperate situation in Somaliland?

I like Aromata, Cape of Spices and the Gulf of Avalites (Awdalites). These are great names that should be revived. I wonder if APONE is how Hobyo name came into existence.

Galbeedi, you make great points. We have to tell the truth and point out deficiencies. Farmaajo's government is slowly becoming worse than anything before. I know we have become used to the killings, but I see things are much worse than when culusoow was in power. It is such a same saaxib.
-
I agree. Farmaajo's story is slowing becoming "war odaygii raadsha" where people are slowly wishing Culusoow was still in power.

30 dead here, 40 dead there, 70 dead there. Bomb here, bomb there. It has become a weekly routine. When will we admit that this government is an utter failure?

The Saudis can't afford to spend $450 Billion on weapons. This is fake news. It is all fake. Read the Brookings Institute's conclusions. https://www.brookings.edu/blog/markaz/2017/06/05/the-110-billion-arms-deal-to-saudi-arabia-is-fake-news/ The Saudis will make small arms purchases, and that is what they have always done, but they don't have the money to spend the mentioned amount. They are currently struggling economically. The Saudis fear the Muslim Brotherhood (which Qatar helps) because unlike the Wahabi doctrine of the Salafis, the Muslim Brotherhood believes a corrupt leader or a monarchy can and should be overthrown through uprising, and citizens should have the freedom to elect good leaders. That basic doctrine is a threat to Gulf monarchies. The Salifies funded by Saudi Arabia teach that "muslim leaders should not be overthrown" even if they are bloody murderers. In other words, the sheep should keep obeying the master till death. Muslim Brotherhood Doctrine: "We believe that the political reform is the true and natural gateway for all other kinds of reform. We have announced our acceptance of democracy that acknowledges political pluralism, the peaceful rotation of power and the fact that the nation is the source of all powers. As we see it, political reform includes the termination of the state of emergency, restoring public freedoms, including the right to establish political parties, whatever their tendencies may be, and the freedom of the press, freedom of criticism and thought, freedom of peaceful demonstrations, freedom of assembly, etc. It also includes the dismantling of all exceptional courts and the annulment of all exceptional laws, establishing the independence of the judiciary, enabling the judiciary to fully and truly supervise general elections so as to ensure that they authentically express people's will, removing all obstacles that restrict the functioning of civil society organizations, etc.[32]
