^It does matter and thanks for the input. Can you give more details on how the UN thinks it can run the country and how the govnt managed to kick them? Also, who are the funders? If a foreign engineering company was to set up in Hargaisa, do they manage funds for Infrastructure projects?

A reasonable way forward proposed by the government. The federal state of Jubbaland is still on the cards but better to be patient and get things right (bottom up approach) now than be back tracking later on. Reconciliation is a good start.

Current Somaliland Foreign Policy - A Rudderless Ship?

Baashi;930503 wrote: With all due respect NORF, you are assumptions on the discussions are fundamentally wrong. You are assuming the discussion is bewteen two equals. Like two independant states, correct? Well if that is the case then I am sorry to say you are ill-informed my good friend. Awoowe the discussion is between Somali Federal Republic and a region of SFR wanting to secede. If you start from this point then you will understand the HUGE leverage SFR has over Somaliland. As it happens SFR controlls banking, borders, ports and even the air. Silanyo has to contend with business class who stand to lose millions. In couple of years this project will crash if you don't find a way to get out of the blid you are in boowe. Silanyo has to either find a willing power to help him turn the tide or succumb to the inevitable reality of being a region of sovereign and independant country called Somali Federal Republic. The crazy option the so called nuclear option is to go war in preventing SFR to govern the country. I know you are broke like me trying to make the ends meet but remember there are business class in that corner of the country who are rational and they will at the end lean on Silanyo and tell him to bargain hard with Mogadishu. If you own an airline company or shipping company or have telecommunication outfit or you are Dhiigshiil the last thing you want to do is a wave a falg no one recognized and isolate yourself to small market. War jiraaba Cakaaro iman! Come on saxib. The discussions are between two equals with a mediator. If they were not seen as equal by the Somali government, if the government in Xamar thought it was bigger than Somaliland, then why agree to a discussion on Somaliland’s wish to breakaway? The Somali government doesn’t control it’s border as it doesn’t have the capacity. Somaliland does control it’s borders (not properly). Somaliland has banks, a port and airspace is controlled from Nairobi for both saxib. I’m not sure how that shows Somalia’s superiority in the context of the discussions. In fact, Somaliland has its state institutions in working order. Your last point on the business elite is a good one but I think they’re still leaning towards Somaliland going on it’s own until Somalia can seduce them -

ailamos, I understand those sites were historical but we both also know about the people who worship others along with Allah Ca Zawajal. They wrongly worship/use as an intermediary prophets, imams, etc through their graves/tombs and by visiting historical sites associated with them. The Saudi government sees itsself as being responsible in maintaining how Allah Ca Zawajal should be worship (alone with no partners) in the holy lands. By destroying these sites they believe they're carrying out their duty as Castodians of the Holy Mosques. If you've been to the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah you would have seen people praying to the Prophet (CSWS) at his grave being ushered away by the guards. The two Muslim guys you mentioned are, by the sounds of it, educated. But the Saudi have the experience of seeing many uneducated Muslims visit the Holy cities and worship at graves and sites. What are they to do? Leave them to worship because of the opinions of foreign journalists? In this context, is what they're doing wrong? How? Ps, yeah I've been here for 4 months now. UAE has developed and the construction industry there has slowed. KSA is the next big development story.

How many of those imams have bothered to get animated about what has happened in Mecca and Medina? How many are outraged that the house of Muhammad’s first wife Khadijah was pulled down and replaced with a block of public toilets, or that five of the seven mosques marking the Battle of the Trench outside Medina have been destroyed, or that religious police cheered when a mosque linked to the Prophet’s grandson was dynamited? It’s politically a lot more convenient to blame infidels for disrespecting your religion’s founder than it is to point the finger of blame at your own kind. Maybe they don't see anything wrong with it. Hard for a non Muslim working for The Independent who will never set foot in the holy lands to understand. What worries/dissapoints many Muslims is the under development of Makka as a whole, the chaotic transport (what transport?) and the commercialisation of Hajj/Ramadan. The Saudi government is spending big on Makka to fix these problems and make things easier for worshippers.Thats what matters to those who matter.

Discussing looted homes in Nairobi. Very apt. But were the homes 'looted'? Are they discussing the security situation before trying to reclaim their homes?

Hmm. Let's hope these guys actually do some work and have an incentive to aim for otherwise they could just milk it and sit in their offices.

At any rate, I thought the story was done in the kid learning a lesson about what happens to pirates (though he may be tempted to catch himself more lions). You missed the word 'wild'. Knowing you, you might introduce banana eating Alians into the story It has the begginings of a good movie. A Somali Goodfellas?

Baashe, just from the fact that Somalia is in discussions with Somaliland, however early those discussions may be, puts Somaliland in a stronger position. When things go south Somaliland will portray itself as being reasonable enough to take part in discussions (proposed by the IC) whilst Somalia won't have a leg to stand on as they agreed to talk with Somaliland about it’s wish for secession (when they could have outright refused and maintained a posture of sovereignty with emphasis on it’s territorial integrity). When there is no agreement, and there will be no agreement, the Somali government will be asked why it didn’t just refuse to answer the door instead of answering then closing it again. -
