  6. Malaysia rejects dialogue with Israel on Middle East: KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar has rejected a call from Israel for dialogue aimed at reaching a resolution to the Middle East crisis, a report said Saturday. "Our refusal to enter into dialogue (with Israel) has nothing to do with race or religion," Syed Hamid was quoted as saying by the Malay language Utusan Malaysia newspaper. "If they continue to trample international law, how can we sit and hold a dialogue with them," he said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on a visit to Sarawak state on Borneo island Saturday confirmed that Malaysia would not hold any talks with Israel. "Malaysia does not have any relations or diplomatic ties with Israel. So, the question of having a dialogue with Tel Aviv does not arise at all," he was quoted as saying by Bernama news agency. Predominantly Muslim Malaysia does not have diplomatic ties with the Jewish state but has close links with Palestinians, backing their struggle for an independent state. On Friday, Israel's ambassador to neighboring Singapore Ilan Ben-Dov called for a constructive dialogue with Malaysia and Indonesia on problems in the Middle East. His call came a day after Malaysia hosted an emergency gathering of Muslim leaders from the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) who condemned Israeli aggression in Lebanon. Abdullah is the OIC chairman. Key members of the 57-nation bloc, including Iran, Turkey and Pakistan condemned "relentless Israeli aggression" and called for an immediate ceasefire. Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, also does not have diplomatic ties with Israel. A series of anti-Israel demonstrations have taken place in both countries following the most recent eruption of Middle East violence. Syed Hamid said he did not see the need for dialogue with Israel. "They receive total protection from a world superpower. They do not need countries like us," he was quoted in the newspaper as saying. http://www.malaysiatimes.com/ Dadnimo iga dheh, aaway kuwii ku daysanlahaa?

  14. The UIC should not have any talks with the TNG until the Ethiopian Troops leave Somalia. There is no piont of any talk when the Ethiopian Troops are present in Somalia. Ethiopia have no business in staying in Somalia, therefore, the TNG needs to realize that if they want to exist they should cut ties (Don't know how they are going to do that when they have signed an agreement with the Xabasho to sell out the country) with the Ethiopian regime. 15. Ethiopia: Patterns of Crime Fabrication Nairobi (HAN) March 5, 2006 - The TPLF and its surrogates amaze you with the kind of distance they traverse to have us believe Kinijit-CUD leaders are violent politicians. I only wish they make a little more plausible fabrications just that they save us defending the obvious. I have lost count of stories of bombs exploded by phantom terrorists and the number of times such explosions were foiled. It seems that these fabrications are made with three objectives in mind. Objective number one is to create doubt among the population and unsuspecting foreigners about the sincerity of the opposition and the legitimacy of their demands. The second objective is to intimidate any attempt at clandestine operation, just in case some members of the opposition want to resort to. This is a proactive technique borne out of a nightmarish fear that the opposition would go underground as did the EPRP during the degue. It is the ?don?t try it - we are good at catching trouble makers? message. The third objective is to produce a justification for the blatant and widespread violations of human rights in the country and mitigate the unease expressed by donor countries whose aid is being used to perpetrate these crimes. In the past, every time the OLF gains some strength and creates some conditions for upheaval, a bomb will explode or be defused somewhere in Addis Ababa or down in Ambo or Wollega or Hararghe. On multiple occasions we were told the OLF was stopped when they were going to blow up some oil depot. At one time we were told they were apprehended with the bombs in their pockets near an oil depot. At other times these bombs would explode somewhere only to be followed by a scathing charge that the opponents were about to disturb public peace, stability and democracy. Sometimes we are told the perpetrators are apprehended at the speed of light and paraded on television. Even children read the faces of these so called criminals as either actors or individuals who were tortured to agree to take part in the play. The same thing was done to fabricate the lies that led to imprison the late Professor Asrat Woldeyes and his colleagues. When Meles Zenawi had a faction problem within the TPLF a bomb went off in a hotel frequented by ethnic Tigreans in the Piazza area. Lives and property were destroyed. It was blamed on poor OLF. Insiders tell us that was a tactic used to sway ethnic Tigreans from supporting the faction and line up with the Meles group. In June 2005, during the election fraud protests, where hundreds died and thousands were thrown into concentration camps, we were told three bombs were thrown at the police by protestors. We are also told two houses belonging to ethnic Tigreans were burnt down during the riots. Many people argue that the houses were set on fire by the security itself looking to concoct a proof for their accusation of genocide against Tigreans. I am told this is one of the craps submitted to the court to prove the genocide allegation. In the same week, in the Kasainchis area, Addis Ababa, the security people were filming a drama where two young individuals were snatching guns from two policemen and running. People were watching as the play was being filmed. I am told this film is one of the evidences to be submitted against the CUD leaders to prove that they were attempting to overthrow the government by force. Right after the election, local CUD offices were closed and leaders were imprisoned on fabricated charges that they were in possession of weapons. During the November protests where another major massacre took place, we were told bombs exploded near student dormitories at Black Lion Hospital and another one was ?diffused? before it exploded near the gate of the Main University Campus. Recently, another mysterious bomb exploded destroying a part of the branch office of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. A day later government media told us that the governor of the bank committed suicide. It is an amazing coincidence. In what seems to be a sequel to this pattern, we are recently told that a terror plot was foiled in Addis Ababa. The government says that the ?terrorists? who were apprehended along with their terror paraphernalia, have relationship to the CUDP, whose leaders are locked up in prison since November 2005 on charges that, had there been a serious and independent judge, would have been thrown out in minutes. A make believe story was read on the radio and television about the terror plot and was given as a talking point to the cadres of the TPLF. Now the cadres are repeating different versions of it through all their news outlets. The pro-TPLF newspaper, which has turned fulltime CUDP and Diaspora basher and campaigner for the TPLF, has added to the visibility of its true colors by carrying a shameful story hatched to lend credence to the story fabricated earlier by the government. The story on the Reporter published on February 26 (Online) states that Ato Andargachew Tsige, a member of the leadership council of the CUD, who is one among the 131 falsely charged in absentia, was in Asmara the previous week, leading a delegation of Ethiopians from London to engage in discussion with the officials of Eritrea. The story includes an insinuation that the talks have to do with the ?terrorist plot? that was allegedly aborted by the government. Along with Andargachew, the Reporter also says that [former] Ambassador Kassa Kebede was also on a similar mission. Everything was a naked lie since both individuals have never set out of the US in the stated time. I hope the two individuals would submit their travel records to US officials who, not only have refused to wrench themselves of their association with a police state, but also think that there is a real court in Ethiopia that is capable of fair delivery of justice. Andargachew was in Washington DC over the last six weeks working on matters related to CUDP, making numerous public lectures, participating in panel discussions, giving talks to small and big groups of civic associations and Americans concerned about conditions in Ethiopia. I have met and talked to him virtually every day as do many Ethiopian Washingtonians. As a close friend, I know his itinerary and activities. Andargachew was in the United States and only in the United States over the last several weeks and went back to London only three days ago. This is the truth and a testimony you can take to the bank. I am not even motivated to react to this absolute canard about the allegation against Andargachew by any belief that going to Asmara and talking to Eritrean officials is a bad idea as the Reporter and the TPLF want Ethiopians to think. On the contrary, I believe any Ethiopian opposition would serve a positive national goal by engaging in dialogue with Eritreans. After all, our future is inextricably tied and there is no way round it if one is to have a stable Horn of Africa. I don?t even think any serious Ethiopian, except TPLF functionaries, would give a damn bit relevance about such a story. And hey! Who the hell do they think they are to choose who we want to talk and not talk to any way? Did they consult us when they agreed to make our country the biggest landlocked country on the planet? I also think Andargachew has the competence to make intelligent choices about talking to Eritrean officials if he so wishes. He is a brilliant and visionary individual to be able to see what merits his country. Andargachew, the author of a magnificent must read book ?Netsanetin yemayawk Netsa Awuchi? (A Freedom Fighter who doesn?t understand Freedom), was a prisoner in Ziway Concentration Camp during the June 8 Massacre. He has been a victim of the brutality the regime and his belief in the value of the peaceful struggle has not diminished. He derives his added commitment from the thousands of determined young Ethiopians who suffered with him and who tried to take care of him when he was suffering in pain inside the concentration camp. I have always wondered why Andargachew walked out of the EPRDF on his own at a time when the Dawit Yohanes?s and the rest of the live to eat animals and robber barons were scrambling for villas and other leftovers of dergue officials early in the days when he was a member of the EPRDF. I have come to know Andargachew as a selfless human being with a stellar sense of integrity and self respect. Everyone can rest assured that he would make an intelligent choice when he so wishes. But this one is pure fabrication. This crap about Andargachew and Ambassador Kassa Kebede is repeated by all the echo chambers of the TPLF as usual. Famous among these is little Mulugeta Asrate Kassa who has not taken minutes to check the authenticity of the story before he posted his usual diatribe against these individuals and the CUD. Am I the only one who thinks that all his writings look like job applications to EPRDF officials? He comes out to me as person who believes he can add size to his brain whenever he makes rude remarks against people like professor Mesfin, a man who I believe can make Mulugeta?s kind of head out of pure mud. (By the way, someone tipped me information about this guy the implications of which, I believe, reflect on his behavior of opportunism. Does anybody know the psychological implications of being raised without knowing that the house servant that raised and breast fed you is actually your real mother? Where are my psychologist friends?) The thing that surprises me the most is that the TPLF and its supporters spew and practice their hate in the open and whenever you hate back what they do, they accuse you of promoting hatred. They don?t feel ashamed when they kill you and accuse you of genocide. Leaders of the TPLF are set to raise their children in happiness by killing other people?s children and criminalizing all dissent against injustice. This paradox cannot continue for long. We are all very near to the abyss now. Opinion Contributed: By Fekade Shewakena Email: Fekadeshewakena@yahoo.com
  16. What's Zenawi doing in Somalia? By Fekade Shewakena July 26, 2006 There is no question that any form of political development in Somalia is bound to affect Ethiopia one way or the other. Ethiopia and Somalia share a long porous boundary and ethnic Somalis live straddling the ill-defined boundary between the two countries. The fact that most of the inhabitants of the long border area are pastoralists who constantly move between the two counties at will also adds to the volatility of the region. Moreover, Ethiopia and Somalia have also fought multiple bloody wars and some historical hostility still persists. More importantly, Somalia’s contention against Ethiopia has been manipulated by Ethiopia’s traditional enemies who think that weakening Ethiopia is in their national interest. It is also interesting and ironic to note that Somalia has been a good friend of Meles Zenawi and his TPLF during the days of his insurgency. Countries and parties interested in playing hardball with the Nile politics have always been rearing their heads from inside Ethiopia’s south eastern neighbor. Some have been supplying arms to flare the conflict between the two countries. It is hard to know if forces hostile to Ethiopia want to benefit Somalia, but their sole objective seems to be preserving a weak Ethiopia that is incapable of doing anything on the Abbay basin. Any Ethiopian government is therefore perfectly justified in being anxious about developments taking place inside Somalia and working to preserve Ethiopia’s national interest. It is hard to understand where the current developments, particularly the rise of the Islam and Islamism as a unifying philosophy of governance would lead Somalia to. It is not at all hard to understand why larger number of Somalis who are known to practice a moderate form of Islam throughout their history would rally around Islamic leaders and Islamism now. For over a decade now, Somalia has been torn apart as a country and decimated into a failed state by thuggish warlords and clan chiefs who partitioned the country and divided it into medieval like fiefdoms. The people of Somalia have been tormented and plagued by lawlessness. A lot of them have become refugees around the world including in Ethiopia. The Islamic Courts have been the only institutions that have provided a semblance of government by handling matters of justice and social service in the communities. This explains the reason for anyone surprised by the immediate success of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) recently. Somalis are sick and tired and fed up of these thugs some of whom are present in the flailing Transitional Government, some with life support by the government of Ethiopia and pandering to the global antiterrorism agenda. The attempt to characterize Somalis as hard line Islamists simply because they are rallying behind their religious leaders currently is not only unfair but also a misunderstanding of the ordeal of the people of Somalia and their frustration. Somalians are known to be fiercely independent people with a known sense of identity and dignity. Historians and social scientists familiar with Somalia tell us that the Islamists would not have significant following had the country was not turned into a failed state. We all know that they have rejected the use of the Arabic alphabet in favor of the Latin earlier in their history, despite attempts and pressure by many Arab countries to do that. Experts on Somalia advise against a rush to conclusion and on the need to talk to the ICU leaders rather than condemning them wholesale at the outset as terrorists. It is not even clear if the leaders of the ICU have a homogenous thinking of the role of Islam in government at this time. The rhetoric of some of the ICU leaders sounds fundamentalist, but it has to also be known that the ICU is composed of Islamic courts leaders that have difficulty understanding what to do with their new found rise and popular support. The wisest thing to do now is not to play into the hands of the extremists by inflaming the passion in the population and perpetuating the hopelessness that extremism feeds on. Much of the good that can come out from what is taking place in Somalia now therefore depends on outside forces and to the extent that they are understood while sorting out their problems. The government of Ethiopia led by Meles Zenawi is now playing a shortsighted and unhelpful role in the Somali crisis. Meles Zenawi's intervention is not only negatively affecting developments inside Somalia, but also is leading the area into a larger conflagration. It is helping radicalize the movement in Somalia to the determent of both Ethiopia’s interests and the global war against terrorism. It is unclear whether the stated objectives of the Ethiopian regime is being served by the actions Meles is and his TPLF clique are taking now or whether they have another objective to be served by irresponsibly inflaming the crisis in Somalia. I argue that the current policies of the Ethiopian government and its incursions into Somalia to defend a hated transitional regime cannot serve Ethiopia’s national interest. Nor do I believe that the incursions and meddling in the affairs of Somalia is to protect any Ethiopian national interest. It appears more of a game of playing the antiterrorism card by Meles Zenawi to find a cover from the crime his government is committing against his people and his political opponents. That appears to be the reason why he is knowingly playing into the hands of the more radical elements in Somalia by giving them a unifying agenda. Meles knows very well that any Ethiopian military intervention could bring out old wounds between the two counties and powers Somali nationalism and helps the Islamists and anti Ethiopian interventionists on Somalia’s side. Meles Zenawi’s irresponsible intervention has therefore a lot to do with the interest of the hated regime he leads. After having twice mowed down peaceful demonstrators protesting his fraudulent election of May 2005, and imprisoning the entire leadership of the main opposition party the CUD and turning entire Ethiopia into a prison, Meles is facing a disappointed West that was craftily led into believing he is a reformer. It appears that Meles is trying to look a more loyal anti-terrorism ally for the United States and whether the widespread uneasiness among members of the US Congress and international humanitarian groups on his continued repressive rule. A serious bi-partisan bill demanding Meles Zenawi to account for his repressive actions and abuse of human rights is pending in Congress now. Meles Zenawi’s lobbyists employed for $50,000 a month by money snatched from the mouths of hungry children recently and a newly appointed ambassador are parading the anti-terrorism cooperation flag to cover for the crimes the regime is committing in Ethiopia. The outcry of international human rights groups and the growing pro-democracy Ethiopian Diaspora has shaken Meles standing in the West and among his allies who were intelligently manipulated into believing he is a reformer. Ever since the war on terrorism is declared and Meles offered himself to be the coalition of the willing, he and his tribal party the TPLF, have reaped various benefits, including being given a blind eye and defending silence by the United States administration while he mows down demonstrators like flies and herds citizens into a network of concentration camps throughout the country and after having been proven to have rigged the election both by the Carter Center observers and the observers of the Election observers of European Union, that declared the election lacking minimum standards of democratic electoral practice. The suspicion that elements of international terrorism exist in Ethiopia’s neighbor by the US government has served him very well too. If former US diplomat Herman Cohen is to be believed, Meles Zenawi was also feeding false information to the US government about terrorism in the Horn of Africa and about political actors inside Somalia while also recruiting friends from among the warlords who also called themselves antiterrorist with the same smart objective of garnering western political and financial support. The question is therefore not whether Ethiopia should be concerned about the developments in Somalia. It is about what the regime of Meles Zenawi is exactly doing. It is not even hard to see as to why Meles is trying to inflame the conflict further and risk a wider conflict in one of the poorest areas of the world. Does anybody think this is in Ethiopia’s interest? Meles is a fairly sophisticated tactician and he knows it is not for Ethiopia or any fear of terrorism against Ethiopia. The inflammatory language coming out of the propagandists of the regime also says a few things about Meles Zenawi’s interest to inflame the region than solve any problem. The Minister of Information rant of “we will crush them†and the calling of an ICU leader a "scum†by a spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may seem words that come out of the mouths of individuals who grew up in Kuchira Sefer. But this is the general rhetorical attempts to inflame the passions and for emotions to run high to provoke war. This helps to shadow the terrorism being committed by Meles Zenawi himself against the Ethiopian people and perhaps military help to crush dissent against his hated regime. At this stage it is hard to tell how much the Ethnic policies of the Ethiopian government could fuel the tension at the border between Somalia and Ethiopia. Generally the pastoralists on the Ethiopian side of the border have been more related to their kin in Mogadishu than the Ethiopian center. The long held aspirations of the formation of Greater Somalia, by bringing ethnic Somalis dispersed in three Horn countries, is an aspiration long held among some Somali elite. Most of the wars of aggression Somalis fought against Ethiopia have been driven by this grand idea. It is not even clear now how much the incentive of Meles’s constitutional endorsement though Article 39 for separation would contribute to fueling the conflict in the border area. Ethiopia as a big country and a potential power house in the region has a lot of positive role to play in terms of easing the conflict and leading to the direction of tackling one of the regions most serious problems- poverty. Since Somalia broke down in the early nineties, several thousand Somalis flocked into Ethiopia as refugees and lived mixed with the Ethiopian people. The view of these refugees about the Ethiopian people has been positively changed. They generally had friendly reception by the Ethiopian people and many Somalis tell me that they wish we all break the boundary between our countries and live as one people. The current military intervention of Meles Zenawi in Somalian territory is not only against international law, but also a dangerous adventure. (Meles Zenawi still keeps denying that his troops are inside Somalia even after witnesses, including members of parliament of the Transitional government he supports from falling, have testified otherwise. He is trying to use the same tactic lie making which is the whole mark of his rule in Ethiopia against the international community) Somalia and Ethiopia are complementary in nature and have a lot to gain for their people if they cultivate sane and intelligent relationships between themselves. Ethiopia is the source of the major rivers crossing the Somali Desert. The varied ecology and agricultural practice between Somalia and Ethiopia can help develop an interdependent economy that can benefit the people of the two counties. Now a landlocked Ethiopia, the most populous landlocked country on the planet, can become a huge beneficiary of Somalia’s port facilities and its extensive boundary with the Indian Ocean just like Somalia can be a beneficiary of the Hydropower generation capacity of Ethiopian rivers. The pastoralists along the border whose livelihood is being increasingly affected by frequent global drought can be helped only with a good Ethio-somali development cooperation. The best thing that can happen to Ethiopia south of its border is a stable government that we can deal lawfully and directly with. It is morally reprehensible to benefit from the problem of a fellow African nation and a neighbor. Ethiopia is can only be a looser by having a failed state as its neighbor. Ethiopians should help Somalis sort out their differences and build a better country that can potentially become our partner in defeating the number one enemy that we all have to fight together – poverty. Perhaps prosperity for the entire Horn region depends on cultivating this potential for the good of the people. I see a serious need for a forum of Somalis and Ethiopians to discuss this issue and develop understanding. I think this can begin among the Somali and Ethiopian Diaspora. The Horn of Africa is the poorest corner of Africa and we know what that means by standards of Africa’s poverty. The most insane thing to do in this region is to ignite war and ask our people to carry another burden over their half dead bodies. Ordinary Ethiopians should take a hard look at the adventurism of Meles Zenawi and his TPLF clique before our national feelings are dragged in into a useless conflagration. The river of blood our compatriots and our Eritrean brothers shed on that crazy war of 1998-2000 should be a lesson. We will fight any war to defend ourselves just like our fathers did. We don’t jump into other peoples wars that are fought for the slick purpose our tyrants devise to keep themselves in power. 19. From: Abdi Aden Mohamed (drabdi_9@hotmail.com) Date: Wed Jan 30 2002 - 18:23:33 EST Ethiopia's betrayal and hidden agendas towards Somalia: In early 1992, Meles Zenawi and his Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) came up with the idea of paying back Somalia. The TPLF government noted that Somalia provided to it millions of dollars during its long struggle against the regime of Mingistu Hailemarium and openly admitted that for over fifteen years it used to purchase arms in the official documents of Somalia's defence ministry. It continued to say that most of its Executive committee members, including Meles have been provided with Somali Diplomatic passports that they used to travel a round the World as well as with special luxurious villas in Mogadishu and Meles used to stay in a villa just behind Towfiiq Hotel. Because of all the above cited, TPLF said that its intended to pay back Somalia by helping them to reconcile and thus create a government of national unity in Somalia, however, later on it become clear that such intentions weren't true at all. As the deputy minister of health of Ethiopia, I led a nine member Ethiopian delegation and participated in the first International meeting on Peace, and Rehabilitation of Somalia that has been organized by the United Nations in October 1992, in Geneva, Switzerland. Our main mission was to lobby for the continuation of successive meetings on Somalia to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Most of the countries that were represented in the conference voted in favour of our proposal on the second day of the meeting and that was a big achievement for Meles and his Foreign minister, both of whom warmly congratulated us on the successful mission while we were still in Geneva. The first Meeting on Peace, Reconciliation and Rehabilitation of Somalia was organized by the UN in Addis Ababa on January 03-05, 1993. Besides the UN and Ethiopia, delegations from the Western nations, Africa, Arab countries and others participated actively in the first three meetings that were held in Addis Ababa in 1993 and I was the Deputy-Chief Delegate of the Ethiopian delegation to those meetings. The leaders of Somalia's warring factions met face to face for the first time but nothing tangible come out of that first meeting. Several member of our delegation met with the warlords and their delegations at the Ghion hotel before they left and told them to include in their next delegations representatives of their communities, like elders, women's groups, doctors and other with the intentions that the Somalis might interact more among themselves and the next meeting might be more productive, however, the foreign Minister was upset by our move and ordered us not to take further actions in the future without his consent and knowledge. The second meeting was on 11-13 March 1993 and it started in more optimistic atmosphere since the warlords were shaking hands without our interventions and more than one thousand Somalis participated. However, I noticed policy changes in the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, which started to favour some of the warlords. The Ethiopian delegation was instructed for the first time to keep in mind Ethiopia's interests as a priority during these meetings and the whole attitudes of the Ethiopian government changed to the opposite of its originally declared policies. Again, the foreign minister through the instructions of Meles informed our delegation that some of the warlords were hostile to Ethiopia while others were friendlier and hence the latter should be put in power in Somalia. At the same time the foreign ministry started to provide secretly large amounts of money to the pro-Ethiopian warlords so that they will not sign to the agreements at all unless it was in our interests and later on, the Minister of defence was order similarly to supply arms to the friendlier warlords. It was of utmost importance in keeping these manoeuvres secretly from the other Somali warlords, the UN and other international delegates, particularly those from the Western Nations and their Embassies in Addis Ababa. At this point in time, I complained to Meles about our policy changes, but he told me that we will support the pro-Ethiopia warlords. Now, I came to realize the motives of why Ethiopia wanted in the first place the meetings to be held in Addis Ababa, which were to road block in the reconciliation of the warring factions and thus prevent the creation of a national government of unity in Somalia. The meeting in March ended with the Somali warring factions more divided than ever and the delegates headed home once more empty handed. Within a month the pro-Ethiopian warlords were invited back to Addis Ababa and as guests of the foreign ministry stayed in lavish hotels with all services available and more secret meetings were planned. I wasn't invited to these secret meetings, but was still able to get information through some of the members of our delegation who weren't TPLF. The 3rd meeting was held in Addis Ababa on November 29-December 03, 1993. Meles refused my request to be excluded from the Ethiopian delegation saying that such a move will cause suspicions to the Somali factions. They knew my stand and excluded me from the briefings of our delegation with Meles as they continued to plan for the failure of the meeting. Again, the third meeting concluded in absolute chaos and with the Somali warring factions much further and further apart than they were in their first meeting of January 1993, but for the Ethiopian regime it ended with success in accordance to its hidden plans towards the peace process, reconciliation and rehabilitation of Somalia. Also it should be absolutely and without any doubt understood that Ethiopia wasn't or isn't opposing only to the creation of a national government in Somalia but does so against any Somali region that was or is peaceful and stable in line with its policy of divide and rule the Somalis and Somalia. To that effect, towards the end of 1993, The Ethiopian regime become anxious about the peace, stability and unity of the Somalis in the self-declared republic of Somaliland and thus started planning for possible actions in order to alleviate its concerns. The Ethiopian government invited a group of politicians from some of the clans in Somaliland to Addis Ababa and successfully kept this event as secretly as possible. Abdulmajid Hussein Bare, who was the external economic cooperation minister of Ethiopia was appointed to be fully responsible for that secret operation, where he prepared all the necessary arrangements. For over a month the group met secretly at his residence and several times with Meles and his foreign minister at their residences and finally, the group unilaterally declared that they were against the succession of Somaliland and joined the warring factions in Mogadishu. It must be noted and clearly understand that at this point in time, Ethiopia wasn't advocating at all for the unity of Somalia, but was rather concerned with the peace, unity and stability of Somaliland and was simply trying to weaken it. Those manoeuvres have led to the outbreak of the terrible civil war in Somaliland during 1994-1995, and the group hasn't been allowed to return home since than and are an opposition to it. Again, look at what Ethiopia is currently doing to the Somalis in Puntland, a region that has been successfully peaceful and stable for the last decade! The foreign ministry used to provide secretly money to the pro-Ethiopian Somali warlords mostly just the night before the reconciliation agreement signing day in Addis Ababa, and I am convinced that had the meetings were held in any other East African country or elsewhere in the World, Somalis would have reconciled and a viable central government could have been established during 1993-1994. Ethiopia has tried since early 1993 until today with its power, influences and efforts to prevent the formation of a national government of unity in Somalia. The Ethiopian Empire has been held together by force for centuries and now most of the nations and nationalities are opting for their right for self-determination and is not capable of conquering Somalia, but might use some warlords to occupy their regions on behalf of Ethiopia and thereby create mini-Somalia regions under it's indirect rule!! Meles is not concerned with the development of poverty ridden Ethiopia, but does so in staying power in line with his long believes in Marxist-Leninism ideology. I remember the night when Meles invited the late General Mohamed Farah Aidid at his residence in December, 1993. Upon our arrival, he greeted Aidid warmly and said with raised voice: "Aidid you are the Hero of Africa!" and congratulated him for fighting against the Americans in that terrible day of October the 3rd, 1993 in Mogadishu. Clearly, he was happy of that human tragedy, asked about the fighting and later on said: "Americans deserve what has happened to them and Africa needs more sons like you". But now, he is showing one of his other faces as being pro-American. The fact is that he is a man of many words! Look at his friendly way of paying back the failed nation, Somalia? Who on earth is going to trust him? he can deceive some people sometimes but he can't deceive all the people all the times!!! Meles officially opened the first Somali meeting in Addis Ababa on January 03, 1993 and said repeatedly in his speech: "My Somali brothers and sisters, Ethiopia has no hidden agendas towards Somalia by hosting these meetings in Addis Ababa and we are willing to help you at any cost". This was a dishonesty statement but the Somalis in the meeting honestly believed him and clapped their hands with joy and happiness and many of them instantly said: "May be he is a Somali, he is more of a Somali than us!!!" This man is a hypocrite and that is clearly shown by his destructive intentions towards Somalia, a nation that has practically brought him to power. Some confused Somalis might argue that Ethiopia has allowed the Somalis to live and stay in Ethiopia following the civil war in Somalia, but the Somalis were bringing millions of dollars to the impoverished economy of Ethiopia. Look at Ethiopia's current actions: why doesn't it allow the Somalis to reside in Ethiopia without the so called special ID cards for the Somalis only, even including the Ethiopian-Somalis? Meles told me in 1993: "Somali clans queue up for my office, each one claiming to be the largest and friendlier to us, however, we know that they are united in their long hate and enmity against Ethiopia". Whether some warlords or clans like the Ethiopians or not, for them the bottom line is: A Somali is a Somali, period! May be you are living in illusions with the temporary 'friendships' that will be simply terminated any time the present Ethiopian regime loses its grip on power or while its still in power! This man has been using some Somali warlords to his advantages; just imagine the Somali generals, colonels and politicians destroying Somalia upon the command of young junior Ethiopian military officers? What more goals could Ethiopia have achieved so easily and cheaply in this historic period? Tribalism which is the true opium of the Somalis has been practised early in the civilization of mankind; unfortunately, Somalis trust and worship it even now and usually close their eyes and turn a deaf ear to the truth if it compromises into their tribal oriented interests and ideological thinking. Most of the Somali politicians and intellectuals practise tribal-based politics, which is not compatible with the modern way of governing in the 21st century. Somali politicians and intellectuals must wake up now!, the ball has been at your corner for along time and it is time to re-evaluate fully your responsibility to the Somali society and act responsibly with positive attitudes for the future of the Somalis and Somalia in this World, keeping in mind that unless you decide to change the present history course of Somalia by yourselves, no body is going to do it for you! Hopefully the Somalis will come back to think rationally, use their sense of reasonable judgement and work to bring Somalia back to its feet as a nation. Somalis must forgive each other, lessen or stop practising tribalism and put national interest as a priority rather than self or the clan for the sake of reconciliation and nation building in Somalia. Whatever happened to the qualities of the Somalis, for the time being they are living in low life and have buried their dignity, patriotism and nationalism for clan and selfish interests! Ethiopia is considered to be the poorest nation in the World by many experts, but has been supplying arms worthy millions of dollars to the pro-Ethiopian warlords for the last eight years. The truth is that these weapons will haunt back Ethiopia sooner or later; what goes around will come back to you! Ethiopia is a landlocked country but isn't planning to use permanently even one of Somalia's several seaports that have been lured to it freely by the pro-Ethiopian factions, but has signed an agreement with Sudan to use permanently it's seaport at Port Sudan!!! Pro-Ethiopian factions, whether you like it or not the fact is that the over a century suspicions, mistrusts and enmity between the Ethiopians and the Somalis are still strong and alive and Ethiopia is using you for it's short term interests only and doesn't honestly trust you at all for a long ride!!! The Western Nations and the UN should understand the basis of the over a century hostility between Ethiopia and Somalia. Ethiopian regime's destabilizing policies against some of its neighbouring countries in East Africa must not be underestimated. Ethiopian soldiers frequently cross the border into Somalia and thereby loot and terrorise the suffering Somalis. Besides, this regime is terrorizing its own citizens, particularly the Somalis and the Oromo, and there are 4-5 million Ethiopian-Somalis who have been exposed to long hidden atrocities, gross human rights violations and are presently living in subhuman conditions in the Somali region of Ethiopia, under it's illegal colonization against their will and consent. These Somalis will keep on pressing their long struggle of fighting injustice until they get back all their human dignities and rights, including their basic principle right of self-determination, all of which have been stolen and hidden from them as well as the World by successive brutal Ethiopian governments for over a century, the present one being the worst of all of them!!! Finally, the World, and particularly the Western Nations, has turned its back to the plight of Somalia for the last eight years, while its hostile neighbouring Ethiopia has taken Somalia's internal affairs into its own hands uncensored. Let us say as an example that Pakistan become like present Somalia! Would the Western Nations and the UN have requested India to assist and come up with solutions in establishing a government of national unity in Pakistan or vice versa? Personally, I don't think so and the enmity between Ethiopia and Somalia is older and worse than theirs. Why is Ethiopia propagating massive propagandas against this failed nation, Somalia? The truth to this question is that Ethiopia is trying to deceive the Western Nations in order to get economic aid and arms that it will use against some of its neighbours in East Africa. Now, it is high time for the merciful, compassionate and peace loving Western Nations, the UN and the rest of the World to start to help and come up with viable solutions to the desperate situation in anarchized Somalia, brought on by the more than decade old civil war. Besides, Ethiopia should be told clearly once and for all to take off its brutal and destructive hands from the internal affairs of Somalia.
