Liberated Women..Are you liberated????

Recommended Posts

The Liberated Woman:

We see some common characteristics in modern secular society concerning what is required of men and women: Open chest shirts for the female, a necktie for the male. Belly exposed shirts for the female, tucked-in shirts for the male. Men's dress patronizes opaque clothing where as feminine clothes are transparent. Modern society labels a man as improperly dressed when not in full suit but women are celebrated if they keep their legs uncovered, even on a cold winter night.

The society that condemns the exhibition of male physical curves and labels them as "perversion" provides artificial "aids" to under developed areas of the female. Everyone has heard the term, 'single mother' but you hardly ever hear about the 'single father'. The fashion world usually controlled by males, aims to create instability in the female mind. She is taught that "wearing the least" is something that builds "status" and taking it all off is "liberation". (Omar, Kamel 1989)

She is taught to hate her own body. The form of her eyelashes and brows, the style of her walking and speech, the color of her lips, nails and cheek are all given an artificial look. She also hates the natural trend of her hair. In such a society, "hair fashion designers" and cosmetic manufacturers make big money.

Whereas men balance themselves on a three-inch base heel of the shoes, the woman is expected to balance herself on a half a centimeter heel. This creates an abnormality called Lordosis in medical terminology. Males make big money, displaying female nakedness through their respectible trades like cabarets, strip bars, fashion shows, and especially commercial advertising (Do I want the Mustang or the sexy blonde in the advertisement?), nude paintings, magazines and now Internet web pages.

Modern urban culture does not only show the above but it also shows: Alarming statistics with manifold percentage increase, compared to past decades, of single parents, children with no fathers, broken families, sex crimes, divorce, suicide and drug use among teens, asylums for unclaimed children, homes for unwanted parents, clinics for delinquent youth and neurotic adults.

Recent estimates suggest that up to 80% of US society displays some form of psychological symptoms, and that up to 22% have psychological problems serious enough to interfere with their day to day living which are diagnosable (Chicago Tribune 12/1999).

Data in the United States also shows that 25 to 35 percent of girls are sexually abused, usually by men well known to them (Kilbourne 1999:253). A high percentage of women so assaulted suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (the same disorder that a large number of Vietnam veterans suffer from) which leads to addiction and substance abuse and eventually to poverty and homelessness. Thus women in America live in a "war zone" in their own homes. If they survive childhood, their boyfriends or husbands eventually get them!

In such societies "liberation" of women has been reduced to a slogan to sell products. Such sellers of "liberation", mostly men, offer women "liberation" via smoking, alcohol, food and their natural longing for stable relationships [which have dwindled in such a society]. This commercial "liberation" comes at a great cost to women and serves to isolate them through addiction. As addicts make great consumers, the sellers of such "liberation" want to keep it that way (Kilbourne 1999).

When such sellers of "liberation" are faced with genuine demands for gender equality, like the ERA [Equal Rights Amendment in the United States], they reject them outright and a government funded and controlled by them makes it fail [ERA failed to pass in 1982]. Such powers that be in these societies not only attack any genuine efforts towards liberation of women in their own society [as they are commercially disadvantageous to them], but also attack all other ideas presented as truly liberating to women, by other societies [to which they export their commercial culture] by labeling them, "harsh, barbaric, primitive". They do this through their control of the media, which in most cases is not only owned by them but depends on them, through their advertising dollars, for its very survival .

This paper is an attempt to reassess the History of Women's Rights, taking note of things that have been widely ignored in popular presentation of the subject. The paper also serves to clarify the position of a book, the Koran that has been distorted and misrepresented through the ages, by those having vested interests.

Are there Liberated men anyways? smile.gifsmile.gif

Everywhere in the World, women are suffering from a wide range of abuse. Their rights are limited in the Third World, like in Muslim countries. But here in the West, they've got every rights, and among them, the way they can live their lives. They could be prostitutes, battered wives, stippers, but they chose to lead these lives. If abused by their partners, family, strangers, they can obtain justice and see the perprators brougt to justice.

Can we say the same for women living in muslims countries? Those women suffering from honour killings, female genital mutulations, arranged marriages? I am watching right now a program on philipino women working in Jordan who are subjected to all forms of abuse from their arabs employers and who cannot seek justice in Jordan.

Are they liberated women?

In the West "liberation" means freedom and rights and in that perspectve, women are indeed, Liberated!

Yes indeed liberated to burn their bras and demand sex in public. Very advanced I say. Makalajabti laid it out all for us lucidly when she said prostitution or any kind of life irrespective of the end result bad or good is liberation. It makes all sense why western women end up mostly depressed and lonely while some of them literally worship men who come their way. Their liberation served men who were the entities they were supposed to be liberated from afterall. Sweet deal. And if we list the successes achieved through feminist movements, it is having a job with less pay than the man next to the woman doing the same job, dressing like a guy, and basically servicing the ever avaricious souls of men. Surely a success in my book.

The usual drivel. Someone says 'liberated' and you take it to mean a 'depressed, lonely, badly paid, man-worshiping prostitute'. Well, I never.

Loneliness and depression aren't confined to certain women (in this case, the liberated western woman), there are plenty of depressed and lonely women about whether they are single, married, Muslim or Gaal. The most depressed and suicidal women are probably the Somali single and married mothers. Heck, imagine being married to a loser and taking care of 5+ children all by urself. Makes being single and depressed positively welcome!

Volunteer at your local Mental Health Trust, and see how the land lays, why don't you? Or even better, get back to your damp and poorly lit cave.

Then, don't end up like them. How? Its quite simple: either don't get married or marry outside the race. I think there's waay too many Somali chicks around anyway, so you don't be missed dear. :D

p.s. I do believe the brother was being sarcastic, so no need to vent. Or, if its within your character, continue venting by all means. After all, this is a free Forum!

First...let me start with this "I did not read the whole article" but what i read from the start was " oooh look...western women…they say they are liberated but they are miserable"...I say well...who gives a roots behind...

It is time that Muslims start focusing on the social ills towards the Muslim women. We are frequently reminded that western women are not really liberated but depressed...and…what about the Muslim women?

Why dont we reevaluate how the Muslim women are not given their Allah given rights, you dont see articles tackling their roles in Muslim society, empowerment of the Muslim women..

A couple of centuries ago women in western world were given the least regards let alone giving their rights to vote or hold any significant position. However, the western world with their social ills have moved towards their goals. Western women fought for their rights (whatever that might be - from getting rid off clothes to positioning themselves to hold important places in the western governments).

For once Muslims need to reexamine their own backyard and see what happened to the Muslim women's rights and their empowerment within the light of Islamic teaching. why can't we focus on our selves. if you ask me…pointing fingers at westerners for every social ill we have is just getting tiring and sounds ridiculous to me.

Show me an articles that says “Muslims women - their rights and empowerment according to Islam"… then lets discuss that and take pride in that rather than throwing a useless article like the one above on our faces… “ooh western women are depressed and naked"…ooh...am surprised!!!

This reminds me a story that a day I laughed at some dude that who was not a Muslim (he was from Christian cult)..and i remember saying certain things about how ****** he looks and so on…and a sheikh who was with me that day said me " It was so easy for you to point out the Christian fella's ****** deeds...but this person doesn't share your faith with you. How can you judge him based on your faith if he is not a Muslim?' The point is. How can we judge western women according to our beliefs if they are not Muslims to start with?

And Let me conclude with this, contrary to what the article is saying that the whole western society wants women to get naked is not entirely correct...you see articles that criticized the image that magazines and Hollywood give the young impressionable teenagers, celebrities and sports icons are constantly reminded and criticized when they step out of line where they are forced to issue public apologies for their behavior.

Cheers
