The Modern day Niiko

 

Cultural barbarics have often critized the Niiko for its sexual connotation.

The Niiko has little to do with sex. It is a dance of joy, performed at joyfull

moments like periods of harvest and weddings. The Niiko is not comparable

with the mating dances performed by African Nomadic tribes like the Dhaanto,

or Zeylici. Its an expressive form of dance, performer will engage in rhythmic play.

 

This Modern Niiko possesses a particular performance style of expressional

pieces, its progression flow in tempo from slow to fast, finalized with a climax.

It is more suited to be performed in small gatherings like weddings,

because of the proximity of the performer to the audience, who can more easily

see the nuances of the dancer's expression and footwork. Consequently,

it translates to the modern proscenium stage with difficulty.

 

The choreography of the Modern day Niiko is based on the art of inventing or

arranging movement, as well as choosing dramatic structures to organize it or

present it to an audience. The art of the Modern day Niiko's choreography itself

is concerned about movement alone (or dance), its set on the dancers interpretation

and reaction to eachothers movements. This continues for an indefinite period,

limited only by the dancer's interpretative abilities. The Modern day Niiko went through

a natural evolution without loosing its traditional touch, naturalness and fertility.

i ought to be worried if my name has become synonymous with negative terms like niiko. i wonder what else i've become associated with?

 

yeah i studied at afgooye but in those day, particularly when i was writing my thesis.....i observed many niiko's and even niikis'ed with local reer afgooye chicks....awesome times...:p

 

do you remember that now infamous 'niiko dance-off' between afgooye state and the ivy league xamar. we killed y'all, ma istidhi?

Their weddings are certainly more entertaining and enjoyable than the weddings of other clans. If they invited me I would go in a heartbeat. Also the Somali Butus are some of the nicest people in Somalia.
