A Somali-born Torontonian has been detained in Egypt since Sunday, without access to a lawyer or Canadian government officials, the Canadian Somali Congress says.

Ahmed Hussen, president of the Canadian Somali Congress, said members of his community are worried about the fate of Abdinasir Jama Warsame, 53, who was arrested on Sunday at the Cairo airport.

“His relatives are concerned,” Hussen said on Thursday. “They’re the ones that came to me. He hasn’t had any consular contact.”

Details are sketchy on why Egyptian police detained Warsame after he stepped off a flight to Cairo.

He splits his time between Toronto and Egypt, where he has family, Hussen said.

Warsame is studying for his PhD in botany, and had taken some classes at the University of Toronto, Hussen said.

Warsame’s family members have been told they’ll be contacted by the department of foreign affairs, but so far they’ve heard nothing to reassure them, Hussen said.

“We don’t have too many details,” Hussen said.

Warsame’s friend, Abdul Rehman Hassan, 51, of Toronto said that the detained man preaches non-violence at the local mosque they both attend.

“His main focus is to help the youth, getting them to understand that the best way is the non-violent way,” Hassan said.

“He’s very passive,” Hassan said. “He’s the type of guy that you least expect to be held in a situation for security problems.”

Hassan said he was detained for 13 hours two months ago when he attempted to enter Cairo.

Hassan, a Canadian citizen and computer expert, said he wasn’t allowed access to Canadian consul officers before he was put back on a Toronto-bound flight, with a police escort.

Word on the street is that some guy (don't want to name him), who runs a Somali community centre here in Toronto, might be behind or has something to do Mr. Warsame's arrest! Whatever the case might be, Ilaahay ha nabad galiyo...

I dont know this man who is arrested but a man who is doing his PHD at 50 looks to me a hard working man not a typical fadhi ku dirir odey..I guess if anything they are jealous of his achievement :(.

salaam

Family and friends should show their refusal and protest against am detention of their fellow citizen. The man is a hostage; he is not accused of any crime. Egypt receives aid from the Canadian government from the taxes that the Canadian citizens (Including Somali Canadians) pay.

Maryooleey Canadians you need to pressure your government to do something. So far they did nothing (remember Bashir Makhtal). Raise your voice.

As for the said man..He needs to be faced. After that maybe a petition will do it.

Sheekh C/naasir Jaamac si fiican aan isku naqaan. Rabi ha u sahlo. Waaba naxay sawirkiisa markaa arkay.

Off topic, waxaan xasuusataa back in 2006, how he preached against Maxkamadaha waagaas soo shaac baxay. Some people wey la yaabi jireen, but his prophetic words run noqotay inay dagaal iyo balaayo kale keeni doonaan. I was with him. He was hardcore anti-violent, especially in the name of our diinteena suuban.

Cawaaloow, dowlad xun oo diinteena neceb ayaa maamulka Kanada heysato sanadahaan. Ra'iisul wasaaraha dalkaan ayaaba laga haayaa in uu yiri two months ago what he considers to be the biggest threat Canada faces is 'Islamicism.' Waala ogyahay wuxuu ula jeedo.Marka qof neceb diinteena maaba axsaan in uu kuu qabto ka sugee. The courts can help, though.

I see a lawsuit coming and a nice outta court settlement for this guy. Wasn't there another similar story here not too long about a Somali mom who got stranded in Nairobi? I wonder how much money she won from that.
