Upcoming, Mogadishu meeting a landmark event or more of the same?

We are all aware that it has been more than two decades since Somalia fell into, the longest civil war in modern history. In my humble opinion the Somali predicament has always been exasperated by outside meddling with the UN being the most important actor.

Now we have another turning point, with the upcoming June Mogadishu conference, or meeting or fact finding seminar what ever you might call it. This event promises to bring together for the first time all the major political players in Somalia. The secessionist, the federalists, the Sufi’s and the career politicians will all come together under the chairmanship of Mr Mahiga our viceroy from Tanzania.

The promise is that this signals the end of Sharif Ahmed , the most incompetent Somali leader in history. Also on the way out is Sharif Xasan, the illiterate over ambitious individual who has over played his hand as of late.

A new Mogadishu

Mogadishu the Somali capital is an important and some what symbolic venue to bring this chapter of our history to a conclusion. Mogadishu has been the centre of the war, the prize that every man and clan fought over. It’s a place where Tyrants, Clan fascist, Warlords, fake religious warriors and outside powers have all tried to hold and failed miserably.

Is it then not ironic that it’s Mogadishu where for the first time leaders from the NW, NE, Central regions and the South will sit together as equals. Never before have all the key players been invited and never before has such a landmark event been held inside Somalia.

It’s a new Mogadishu who’s most powerful armed forces are no longer Clan X, or Y but a coalition of African troops, a new clan known as AMISOM. This clan and its chief Mahiga is hoped will tell the obstinate Somali’s what time it is.

No longer will the likes of Ahmed Diriye or anyone for that matter claim this is their rightful abode, that others are not welcome.

A fruitful outcome

What is required from this meeting is that

1. Dissolving the current parliament of 550, and creating a new lean 100-150 legislative council.

2. Hold a new election for President, Speaker with clear criteria for selection, education, experience and character.

3. Force the regional States notably Somaliland and Puntland to play a more constructive role in aiding the new government.

If Mr Mahiga plays his cards right, this might be the game changer all Somali’s have been waiting for.

What will a meeting with out alshabaab bring forward this is just another attempt to continue the status quo of Somalia Sure there will be another TFG president and Prime Minister but that's about it.

Somaliland aiding a new Somalia Government? wishful thinking. Unless of course it's in the interests of Somaliland and it's people.

It's the world dictating to Somalia! Not the other way round, my dear secessionists get that in your head. Everyone who boycotts will be dealt with and lose the support of the International Community, of course the secessionist will be the first to come to that consultative meeting, with their subservient nature.

Somaliland is not a weak Pirate state like Puntland who gives up easily just like their SSDF fathers who surroundered to Siad bare after they got a heavy karbash. Somaliland is owned by it's people not the international community get that in your skull!

Somaliland has no option as was clear from this meeting. A leaner Parliament, a new President and PM with a competent cabinet and a 5 year mandate will transform things.

Somaliland, Puntland and other regional States will have to play a constructive role.

Sharif Ahmed, Sharif Xasan and all their acolytes will be out of the door. One hopes a new transformational leadership will emerge. The comedy of the past two years has been enough to drive anyone over the bridge.

I doubt Mogadishu would ever be tamed unless it's people are ready to make their city peaceful and kick out the warlords, former criminals similar to Abdulahi Yusuf.
