Muniraa I think you idea is fab lets fundraise… but its important we implement the projects we fundraise for, the reason being this will go a long way in building a sense of belonging and citizenry… However, I think the first hurdle to overcome is the denial and defeatist barrier.. Somalis have to face the reality that is staring straight at us… • we are poor, • our people are suffering from displacement, hunger, floods, drought and dying from curable diseases, • we are overwhelmingly illiterate • ETC We should accept this reality and think had what to do about it!! It’s a challenge of our generation; we should not shy away from it nor be embarrassed to the extent that we deny it… I am confident we have the capacity as people to overcome this and build a future that is bright, just and dignified for all of us… I don’t have answers or cure to all our ills but I have the commitment and will to overcome them with.. join me in generating momentum and passion, for this goal… lets liberate ourselves from the slavery clannish politicking to a higher goal of emancipation from poverty and a prosperous Somalia at peace Utopian dreamer maybe… but remember, the world was never built by cynics.. Inform people on the plight of others and show them how to make a difference. There are over 30 million refugees in the world the overwhelming majority of whom is non Somali. And unless one is in a refugee camp, most people are often more occupied with their kids' homework and paying rent than with what goes on in refugee camps. Rightly or wrongly, these are simply facts of life. In your own way, you may succeed in making a difference in the world with your enthusiasm and hard work but you won't get very far screaming at the public on why they're so apathetic and what not. Most people ache (at least they should) when they see pictures like these but the realities of their lives often trump far away miseries. If you feel you have what it takes, lead by example. You will quickly have willing audience if you can show others practical and feasible ways to help. If all you plan to do is call out diaspora Somalis as fat, lazy, indifferent and apathetic b*stards, that audience will simply walk away from you. And despite your incessant huffing and puffing, I actually admire your energy and passion for alleviating the misery of, at least, your people. Find better ways to go about it though. Rarely do I come across Somalis like you. I have seen many Somali Diaspora expressing excellent ideas on how to better improve the conditions in our country. But it is rare to find a group of Somalis that are collectively moving from talking stage into an action stage. Do not misunderstand me. Yes, there are tribal charities struggling to do something about local needs. But, who can tell me any Diaspora organization or open network of Somalis with higher education who are actively engaged to bring Somalis closer to each other or doing something about the condition back home. For this issue, this is my suggestion. You see my brother, helping a group of refuges in Kenya, although a noble idea on individual level, is not going to be comprehensive solution for all other Somalis suffering somewhere on the globe. What we need and can do in the comfort of our homes and offices is to have a group of western educated Somalis whose members is no less than 100, composed of forensic accountants, essayists, economists, lawyers, engineers, international trade specialists, doctors, charities coordinators or if possible from every discipline or trade to form a network . The goal of the network must be to follow the footsteps or the circulation of EVERY DENOTED Dollar in the name of Somalis i.e. how that dollar was spent and why it was spent. Does the utility driven from spending that dollar equate its value? Many of us are citizens of major donors to third world countries. We can demand information, data, explanations etc. If we suspect any wrong doing by NGOs or by the UN organizations, we can expose them in the media. In short, what we need to form is one tough s.o.b. watchdog…. Where are the sons and daughters of Somalia to undertake this clanless noble work? Undoubtedly, if this kind of network comes into life, the condition “hellish refugee camps in Yemen or Kenya” would have a different look..
