Somalia: Puntland court sentences former governor

13 Oct 13, 2009 - 11:03:12 AM

BOSSASO, Somalia Oct 13 (Garowe Online) - A former provincial governor was sentenced to serve a six-month term in a court in Somalia's Puntland region, Radio Garowe reports.

The Bossaso Court listened to the case against Mr. Abdinur Gessey, the former governor of Mudug region, who was arrested by Puntland police in August in connection with the assassination of Puntland's late information minister, Mr. Warsame Abdi "Sefta Bananka."

Mr. Mohamud Hassan Osman, Puntland's prosecutor-general, presented a case against the former governor who was sentenced to serve six months in jail.

Mr. Osman said five suspects who escaped were sentenced in absentia, with the two killers sentenced to death and the three accomplices sentenced to serve 15 years each.

Mr. Gessey, who spoke in court, said he did not show up at the burial of the late Information Minister because he was ill. He stated that he ordered local police to catch the killers immediately after the deadly shooting in Galkayo on Aug. 5, 2009, when Mr. Warsame Abdi lost his life.

It is the first time in Puntland's 11-year history that an active provincial governor

was arrested for a crime and sentenced in court.

Currently, there is a Puntland MP jailed in Bossaso awaiting trail for a rape case, making it the first time a Puntland lawmaker was jailed and lost his immunity.

Yes, only six months and I guess the actual killers will face no justice either. I guess it is symbolism that matters not ( men in power being prosecuted) that would make difference to the victim's family.

Did they not sentence the actual killers to death; I do not think they have any evidence against this guy. Why do you think he deserves harsher sentence?

Thankful

Faroole's son's want to try and change every news to make them look good. There's no accountability, for instance when there was that fire on the boat, they said that "government officials blamed previous administration for not enacted fire laws."

Now they are trying to say that previous admins gave governors immunity from rape and murder? There has never been a minister killed while on duty and there is no way a family will allow a rape to occur and not seek punishment against the accused. This are crimes of murder and rape are involving government officials are new to Puntland.

Most admin praise the leaders and governments before them for everything and show respect, but these guys always twist things to make it look like now things are better and before they were worse. They don't realize they are making Puntland look bad!!! As these clowns have implied, who would want to invest in a place that just started punishing parliament members accused of rape or punish someone involved in murder with 6 months?

This is exactly why the VOA was banned for simply interviewing someone, he needed to put his spin on all the news.

Many people don't attend their court cases in developed nations. However the system will catch up with them sooner or later.

These people were sentenced already to death, now the law enforcement will find them and prompty arrest them and carry out the court sentencing.

As for the governor he was not found guilty of killing anyone and he didn't he was suspected of planning it which he got 6 months. But 2 people are going to be killed for the former minister.

"Six months" for a guy who didn't kill anyone is not bad for justice in that part of the world. The government had no evidence against this man, other than that he didn't show up for the funeral. (There was only "tuhun" of some sort that the former governor knew something since the killers were from his sub-clan))

I say the system is working boys.

Libaax. Those two will be killed i am fairly certain of it, because if they are not it can trigger a clan-war.

I am sure the people would prefer 2 ppl dead rather then clan warfare.

You can't hide in puntland for that long, words get around. I suspect these people went to galmudug section to hide out, knowing puntland police won't go there as it is not apart of their juristiction.

But it only takes 1 guy to be sent over there to say come over a chewing session tommorow night on the northern side of galkacyo and he will be nabbed or their might be a transfer system between galmudug and puntland.

I don't know we will wait and see, but what we do know is someone will have to die for this incident for the sake of peace.

The question Cowke is, why was he targeted in the first place? From what I heard it was retalition for 3 guys that were killed weeks earlier, who had gone to close down an illegal checkpoint and were fired upon. If this is the case, then the score is settled, that is why there is no longer anymore fighting.

It's indeed a good development. And I hope those perpetrators who killed the minister will be caught and brought to justice.

ThankfulSP, give it a rest would you! What's with you and this obsession with Faroole's sons?
