I've been thinking about this SOL bibol,do Soomaalis even have a word for children/offspring in general regardless of gender/age grp..basically plural?

Children = awlaad, ilmo.

Ilmo, yes, it can have the connotation to mean as an infant, but it fits as a translation for children. There is the rarely used one: awlaad. Awlaad sounds Carabi, though, but I am sure it is native Soomaali word.

I've just realized something -- the unnecessary, non-essential Carabi words we use everyday. By non-essential, I mean words that don't have to do with diinta and politics, whose equivalance in Soomaali can be a bit tad finding. Siyaasad and many of its derives is such an instance.

The following words are just a few for an illustration. [We have lost many everyday words in process of neglecting our language hodanka ah; words we've now substituted to, such as the Carabi one, xataa (even). Go and try finding a Soomaali equivalent word. I don't think you can find.]

  • Xaq = dhab/run
  • Kursi = fadhi
  • Muhiim = laga maarmaan
  • Kuli = dhamaan
  • Waji = fool
  • Rayi = aragti
  • Kalmad = eray
  • Usbuuc = toddobaad
  • Xukun = maamul
  • Beecmushtar = ganacsade
  • Miis = ?
  • Jawaab = ?
  • Qalin = qore?
  • Qataar = quful
  • Qasnad = keyd
  • Qatar = halis
  • Macalin = waxgarad
  • Sharaf = heybad
  • Xabsi = saldhig
  • Jaraa'id = wargeys
  • Mudaaharaad = banaanbax
  • Warqad = xaanshi
  • Matalan = tusaale
  • Shacab = dadweyne/bulshweynta
  • Qayaano = sir
  • Xisbi = urur
  • Taajir = qani
  • Maal = xoole
  • Cilmi = aqoon
  • Qaraar = go'aan [resolution]
  • Qabiir = xeeldheere
  • Qaas = gaar
  • Waajib = xil
  • Xayawaan = xoole
  • Qadarin = xushmo
We are even witnessing how far it went when we recently noticed the rise of this word 'shabaab' used predominantly by certain people. What is wrong with dhalinyaro?

Cara.

Is it laga maarmaan or lagama maarmaan?

Xaq in Somali comes closer to meaning "justice" rather than "truth". I would say "dhab" means "genuine" or "precise".

Qayaano means deception, not just secret (sir).

Deception [qayaano] = sirid, which I should have probably used.

Xaq is truth, which in Afsoomaali is run/dhab, which I used both. Caddaalad, another borrowed one, is for justice. The borrowed word of 'xaq' changes into many forms in Soomaali. Xuquuq means rights; xaqiiq is dhab ahaantii or authenticating or making sure.

I thought Qaraar meant 'decision'..

Isn't 'Miis' a somali word? and doesn't it have 2 meanings? Table and Squeeze..

Table in arabic is Taawilah

Qaraar or Qaran?

I'd always thought Qaran was decision/resolution and Qaraar meant bitter. i.e.

Shaaha waa qaraar, and

Amarkaas qaran baan ka gaarne

[edit]

with regard to 'Ciyaalbaas' i have some vague recollection that the 'baas' is derived from snake or devilish

for example. if its from the word "abaaso" for a snake (or adder - i don't know if we differentiate between them) - it could literally mean "snakes children"

and the 'oow' ending like Ciyaaloow can be used in many terms for example 'Ciyaalkeygoow' to mean o' my children .. but then you could also say "Cilyaalkiisoow" to mean o' his children, however it sounds wrong.

Does anyone have an idea on the restrictions on the 'oow' ending?

Aaliyyah

Qaran = nation. i.e. qaranka somaliyeed

Qadhaadh= bitter i.e. shaaraabaku wuu qadhaadhyahay, even though perhaps if u are reer hamar u would be like qaraar , like instead of the "dh" u will use "r"...

Qaraar = resolution i.e. qaraar ba laga gaadhay.

hope that helps :D

Aaliyah, I think it might be regional.

i.e. the 'dh' is disproportionately used in the north, from "qadhaadh" i would guess that your family is from the waqooyi

anyhow qaraar as resolution is new to me

Qaraar has multiple meanings depending on it’s use. For example, waxaas qaraar baa kaa haya meaning your feeling envious or jealous. Another example, shaahan waa qaraar yahay to mean doesn’t have enough sugar. So yeah bitter, sour and envious are the meanings I could think of but resolution is new to me.
