  1. Somalia: Mogadishu vs Jowhar Tue. October 11, 2005 08:58 am. Send this news article Jowhar Southern Somalia has been plagued by the worst imaginable public disorder for a long time. American western movies look like a Child’s play when you see the reality in southern Somalia. One of Mogadishu’s local websites (midnimo.com) covered a very disturbing rape stories that took place last week. The more disturbing one is about a gang of 30 men who raped a sixteen year old girl and left her bleeding and powerless. A few days before that senseless gang-rape, four other young girls were brutally raped in the same area. What bothered the reporter was that the men who commit these crimes regularly are known in the area and nobody seems to be bothered by their actions. Another site, ruunkinet.com went further and said wives and daughters are often raped in front of their husbands and children in Mogadishu. Mogadishu politicians, from more respected former presidents Ali Mahdi and Abdiqasim Salad Hassan to today’s tribal faction leaders and Islamic courts seldom talk this taboo let alone try to curb it. The city has a hierarchal tribal system of which all armed men and politicians belong to the top class whose people feel more secure. Women from this broader tribe are safe from rape as long as they do not venture into the dark at night. The most unfortunate people in Mogadishu are members of unarmed tribes who are not allowed to bear weapons. These people go through unimaginable humiliations including rape and killing, writes ruunkinet.com Jowhar From outside, the city is striving vibrantly and business is booming. Although business owners spend a bulk of their revenues for security, there are no regulations, government taxes or licensing fees, making the city the capital of the capitalist world. For instance, there are ten times more telecommunications and wireless companies than most African cities including Nairobi, Kenya. However, Mogadishu still remains the most dangerous city in the world today. People get killed in their homes, streets and place of businesses. Mogadishu warlords have the audacity to go on air and say we are defenders of your freedom to the people they suffocate day in and day out. Ninety Kms northeast of Mogadishu lies much smaller Jowhar town where the president and the prime minister currently operate. They chose this small and dusty town over the capital for security and safely. When the average Mogadishu household is armed, Jowhar visitors tell us they were surprised by the law and order Jowhar authority exercises. To their surprise, there were no guns to bee seen anywhere except the ones used by security forces. There is no fear of any kind and violent crimes don’t happen in this town at all. Jowhar Just last week, President Abdulahi Yusuf and Prime Minister Gedi along with an Italian envoy were seen walking downtown Jowhar without battlewagons or anything in that nature. They surprised a coffee shop employees and customers when they went in like other customers. In this month of Holly Ramadan, most men in Somalia go out for a drink after evening break-fast, and the president and the prime minister were not different. They walked through dusty streets of Jowhar and sat in one of the coffee shops, chatting with other customers and employees. This kind of atmosphere boosts the morale of Somali people all over the world and gives them a glimpse of hope . On the one hand, Mogadishu residents have all the technological toys in the world but death is in every one’s mind constantly. People lose their lives for something like $20 Nokia handset On the other hand, Jowhar is underdeveloped, with a lot of mosquitoes from the river that goes through the city. However, unlike its larger and more advanced neighbor, human life has value.
  2. Somalia: Sheik Indha Ade labeleld as a druglord by the UN. I hate the UN they know what's going on and they are not doing anything about it so what is the point of talking about it in the first place. UN has been no help to the Somalian Government. This government will take the steps needed for a safe Somalia in any matter. The UN needs to put both of it's hands in Somalia or take both of it's hands out because one hand is no good. This government is not only facing War-lords but also druglords that don't give a **** about the homeland they have turned our farmland to drugland they must be reminded that Somalia is no going to South America. Those that support the war-lors and druglords are no different they don't give a shit about the homeland also so please don't come on somalionline and act like you seem to care.

  7. By Ali Halni, IOL Correspondent MOGADISHU, October 12 (IslamOnline.net) – Faced with a mission that seems impossible, newly-elected Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed hopes to see a federal Somalia under a strong central government. Following years of chaos, Somalia interim parliament, gathered in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, has selected Ahmed Sunday, October 10, to be the first president in 14 years for the war-ravaged country. Twenty-five candidates entered the race, 24 of which were either eliminated in the first two rounds or withdrew. Ahmed won the race in the third round run-off ballot after trouncing his rival, former diplomat and minister Abdullahi Ahmed Adow, by 189 votes to 79. Military Career Born in 1934 in the central Somalia city of Galcaio, the Somali president graduated from military faculties in Italy and the former Soviet Union. Joining the ranks of the Somali Army, Ahmed promoted, rising to the rank of colonel during the era of dictator Mohamed Siyad Berre. Ahmed also studied at the faculty of law in Somalia but was arrested by the Somali security authorities and did not obtain a law degree. In 1969, Yusuf was detained for six years following the military coup of led by Berre in October 1969. Following the outbreak of war between Somalia and Ethiopia in 1977, Ahmed was not only released, but was also appointed as an army commander. Barre held dictatorial rule over Somalia from October 1969, when he led a bloodless military coup against the elected government, until January 1991. Failed Coup In 1978, Ahmed, along with other Somali senior army officers carried out a failed coup against the then incumbent president Berre. Following the failed bid, a group of officers were sentenced to death, but Ahmed escaped Somalia for neighboring Ethiopia where he formed the first Somalia Salvation Defense Front to oppose Barre. In 1986, the newly-elected president was arrested by the Ethiopian authorities under an agreement between Barre and his Ethiopian counterpart Mengistu Haile Mariam. In 1991, Somali warlords overthrew Barre and turned their guns on one other, dividing the country of about 7 million people. Ahmed took a position in the Somali city of Bosaso in southeast Somalia with his Salvation front, causing bloody conflicts with the Islamic Union front stationed in the area. In 1993, he was arrested by the Islamic Union militias but was later released following a tribal mediation. He was nominated in 1998 president of the autonomous northeastern region of Puntland. Federalism The new president is known for his strong inclination towards federalism as the best means to achieve stability in Somalia after years of civil war. He is also known to favor open market policies and establishing strong relations with western countries. Following elections, victorious Ahmed vowed relentless efforts to reconstruct the country which has been devastated by years of factional fighting since 1991. Since the 1991 fall of Barre, Somalia has lacked almost all the trappings of a functional state, such as national systems of education, healthcare and justice. The African Union has said it was considering sending such a force, but no detailed plan has yet been unveiled. The last international intervention in Somalia was a disaster. A UN mission deployed from 1992 to 1995 provided famine relief but failed to restore peace. The United States also hurriedly withdrew its forces after 18 of them were killed during a botched mission in Mogadishu in October 1993. -------------------- Be the change you want to see in the world.~~ Mahatma Gandhi
  8. One person can't do miracle qumane. Congradulations to our President For his first year.
  9. It was A day unlike any other as I recall. Those pictures bring back some great memories A day that Somalians around the world will never forget. My whole Family didn't go to sleep that day from the young to the old. We watch it as it happened A New nation was born. Once we heard President of Somalia Abduallhi Yusuf Ahmad My whole world turned upside down because of the happness that I felt. I knew out of those that where runing for President he was the best choice. Because he is a leader he wanted it so bad it was a dream come true for all, that wanted a united Somali. Even though the President had his ups and downs overall he has done a Great Job. It's a poor Government I don't except to much to be done. Speacily when there are war-lords that are trying to stand in front of the government. No War has occured which is great the President is in Jowhar and most of the Parlementerians are there doing there jobs. The Somali Army has been put in place there are government workers in most parts of Somali today they have toured the nation from village to village they got the people they wanted on there side working with them. What more do we except?

  11. With the help of Kenyan government, the interim government of Somalia in Jowhar fired its first political shot against the renegade ministerial cabinet members in Mogadishu. A new agreement between the two nations state that any government official who wants to visit Kenya, Somalia’s international gateway must get an approval from the prime minister’s office starting today. It simply means government officials are not allowed to visit Kenya unless the prime minister pre-approves their visits. This move, if enforced will affect the movement of Mogadishu faction leaders who hold senior ranks in the interim government ranging from minister to deputy minister. These men, who refused to work with the prime minister and the president, are now openly working hard to sabotage the interim government calling it an Ethiopian puppet. Kenya has been Somalia’s International lifeline since the start of the civil war and this agreement with the interim government willwill have great effect Mogadishu strong men's mobility. Interim Government Press Release: All Ministers Deputy Ministers, MPs and Senior Officials of the TFG regardless of the passport or travel document in their possession, seeking to enter and visit Kenya, must seek a letter of Clearance from the Office of the Prime Minister authorizing such a visit.
