  1. Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi, accompanied by half a dozen government officials and members of the parliament, arrived in Jowhar today from work related visit to Nairobi Kenya. Parliamentarians and government officials who came with him were part of a larger group who originally sided with Mogadishu based faction leaders and held their sessions in Mogadishu, refusing to move to government’s temporary operations headquarters, Jowhar. Speaking with SomaliNet, the prime minister said the government is not divided anymore and every peace loving member is now in happily Jowhar. We hope the rest will follow suit and join us. Members of Mogadishu camp started coming to Jowhar in the past few days. The prime minister thanked government and parliament members who changed their view about his leadership and decided to work with him wholeheartedly. He called his trip a success. Dr. Qamar Adan Ali told SomaliNet she came to Jowhar for national cause and was very happy to be in Jowhar today. Mogadishu faction leaders who are losing political ground to the government accused their former allies who went to Jowhar voluntarily of seeking bribe from the president. In other development, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative to Somalia, François Lonseny Fall met with President Abdulahi Yusuf in Jowhar Tuesday. They discussed about current situation and United Nations’ role in Somalia’s road to recovery. Mr. Fall held a press conference after the meeting in which he acknowledged Mogadishu's current unsafe situation and accepted Jowhar as Somalia’s temporary capital city. Also you are claiming Abdullahi Yusuf who is from Puntland region is working on the problems of Somalia please, Allah and all Somali people know as well as you do that Abdullahi Yusuf is dark hearted man who will never bring any positive note to Somalia let alone a stable government. We need to look else where, someone who is close to Allah. What did you expect other warlords do, when another war lord is trying to tell them what to do, well I expect bloodshed and turmoil which seems to be the case that is unfolding ifront of our eyes. Abdullahi Yusuf isn't the answer for Somalia's problems, but we hope Allah brings a just ruler soon inshallah. Salamu Calaykum. Abduallhi yusuf is the just ruler for the situation Somalia is in today. To beat a War-lord you must get another war-lord to kick his *** that is what we plan to do with Abduallhi Yusuf's help.
  9. Less than 10% of the people drive and 90% walk so what's the point of roads between houses. But I guess in the long run when the population of people who drive gets greater that is going to be a problem but hey that is years away. In the city of Gaalkacyo we built our own house which coast my family about 45,000. Now we are about to sale it for 65,000 the house is in the middle of the city and is on the road. It stands out becasue it's one of the biggest homes in the area. Most people new to the area think it's a hotel with 7 bedrooms and 4bathrooms and a drive way. My mother is reer Gaalkacyo even though my dad is on clan lines but he grew up in the south reer Kismayo so we are builting homes in Kismayo at this moment. We are in the real estate business, But we are private real estate.

  13. In an exclusive interview with Mohamed Yusuf of SomaliNet last week, Somalia president, Mr. Abdulahi Yusuf Ahmed was upbeat about today’s political climate and promised to end Somalia’s lawlessness without major clashes between his government and the opposition. When asked if he is planning to invade Mogadishu he replied with “Listen to me very carefully. There will be no fighting in Somalia and I promise to lead our nation into prosperity lasting peace without using any means of forceâ€. He defended the government’s recruitment of thousands of former members of the armed forces and new militias by saying in order to maintain peace, we need armed forces. He said the people want to see functioning national government but a very few individuals want to keep the country the way it is now for personal gains. As its predecessors, the federal government of Somalia was greeted by oppositions as soon as it was formed in Nairobi, Kenya after two years of national reconciliation conference. Surprisingly enough, the new government is gaining weight while its oppositions are losing ground without armed confrontations. Soon after Mr. Abdulahi Yusuf was elected, many Mogadishu faction leaders denounced the new government and started branding it as an Ethiopian puppy and un-Islamic. Many parliament members including the speaker of the house severed ranks with the government and went to Mogadishu instead of pre-agreed Jowhar. Finally, the president, prime minister and the rest of the government officials and members of the parliament went to Jowhar in hopes of ruling the country from that little town. Many political analysts thought Jowhar camp could not last more than few months and politicians would go back to the drawing boards to call for yet another national conference in a couple of years. That did not happen so far and the men and women in Jowhar seem very determined to outlast all other interim governments by doing right everything failed governments did wrong, including staying away from Mogadishu as long as it is controlled by what they call hostile elements. While the interim government is forging international treaties and rebuilding Somalia armed forced slowly but steadily, Mogadishu camp is deteriorating rapidly. Government appointed Mogadishu mayor just got a very crucial endorsement from faction leaders who control sizable enclave in the city today. In a surprise announcement, former Muse Sudi field commanders held a press conference with the mayor and said Madina district of Mogadishu endorses and welcomes the federal government. Some parts of Mogadishu are controlled by pro-government faction leaders like Hussein Aidid, the son of late Mohamed Farah Aidid who holds a ministerial position in the federal government. Mogadishu camp, dominated by three very strong faction leaders Muse Sudi Yalahow, Osman Atto and Mohamed Qanyare lost another very important ally few weeks back. The man who controls much of Somalia’s fertile land and former senior military commander, Mr. Barre Adan Shire (Hirale) left Mogadishu to his turf, Kismayo after his proposal to mediate Mogadishu and Jowhar camps was rejected. In a press conference he held right after he went back to Kismayo, Mr. Hirale said ninety five percent of the parliament members who were in Mogadishu at the time accepted his proposal to end divisions among government and parliament members. However, Mogadishu strong men did not like it. Another setback came after members of the parliament within the Mogadishu camp started to go to Jowhar for the first time. Whatever the future holds for Somalia, its political climate is unpredictable and faction leaders change sides as often as people change cars. News Category: Somalia Send this news article

  15. Too many guns, too little food in Somalia - Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 16:01 Chris Tomlinson | Nairobi, Kenya With too many weapons, too little food and three factions vying for control, Somalia's anarchy is fast overwhelming its new government even before it can establish itself in the country. The competition for power, which threatens to trigger another civil war, could combine with a potential humanitarian crisis for a repeat of the disaster that followed the collapse of Somalia's last regime in 1991. A massive UN operation was mounted then to help the starving, but failed to set up a viable government in the Horn of Africa nation. Experts agree that another civil war could create an opportunity for Islamic extremists to take power. Already, at least one cell of the international terrorist group al-Qaeda is believed to have established itself in the Horn of Africa country. Homegrown Islamist militias move freely in some parts of Mogadishu, the capital, shutting down bars and destroying shops that reproduce or sell pirated DVDs and music cassettes. The United States has long feared that Islamic militants may take advantage of the clan-fuelled anarchy in Somalia to establish new bases after the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Heightened tensions in the capital come as poor rainfall, mass displacement of farmers due to fighting and extensive environmental destruction have set the stage for widespread hunger. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation's Food Security Analysis Unit called in its October report for contingency planning for the possibility of widespread humanitarian relief needs in southern Somalia. "Civil insecurity and unrest continues to be one of the main factors contributing to food and livelihood insecurity throughout the region," the report added. Most Somalis already depend on some form of food hand-out to survive. Many live in wretched camps after clan fighting destroyed their homes. A local crop failure, which is feared, could increase their dependency on foreign food aid, which is already tenuous given the current political situation. The year-old transitional federal government, intended to bring peace and the first central government the country has seen in 14 years, has split in two. The secular president and prime minister are located in the small town of Jowhar, while the warlords of Mogadishu, some of whom are also Cabinet ministers, have stopped cooperating until they get some concessions from the president. Forming a third force are Muslim fundamentalists who have set up an Islamic court system with militias to enforce the judge's rulings. They want an Islamic government, or else, a key leader has told The Associated Press. All three sides in Somalia have received large shipments of arms -- often from neighbouring countries hoping to gain influence with Somalia's competing clans -- setting the stage for renewed war, according to a recent UN report. The UN Monitoring Group on Somalia reported to the Security Council that there was a "severely elevated threat of widespread violence in central and southern Somalia". Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi has been working hard to make his government viable since he was sworn in last year. The product of the 14th peace process in 15 years, his government originally included all of the key warlords and received a great deal of international backing. "We are trying to calm the militias, but it is not an easy task to restore security and stability in the country," Gedi said in an interview in neighbouring Kenya. He dismissed the schism within his Cabinet, pointing out that out of 42 members, only five were in Mogadishu, refusing to cooperate with him. "It is not as bad as people are saying," he said. But it is bad enough to split the international community. Diplomats can't agree on whether they should back Gedi and President Abdulahi Yusuf now, or instead wait to see if the Mogadishu warlords can be coaxed back into the peace process, officials familiar with ongoing discussions said. While the four key militia leaders in Mogadishu control the only city in the country and most of Somalia's economy, the only thing they seem to have in common is a hatred for Yusuf, and what they say are his dictatorial inclinations. While reconciliation efforts are under way, few observers hold out any hope they will succeed. Waiting in the wings are Somalia's fundamentalist Muslims, some of whom have been listed by the US State Department as al-Qaeda collaborators. The most prominent is Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys. While Aweys will not address allegations he's had contacts with al-Qaeda, he has made no secret of his opposition to Yusuf, his readiness to declare a jihad should foreign peacekeepers enter Somalia, or his plans to establish an Islamic government. Since none of the three factions are believed to have sufficient firepower to defeat the other, it is unclear how long the current status quo can last, but the threat of war hangs over relief workers who will try to provide aid to the hungry in the months to come. - Sapa-AP Source: Mail & Guardian Online Powered by AllPuntland.com Copyright ©AllPuntland.com

You think after Boasasso things stop there? All the fighing with Somaliland? Even after he was elected as the TFG president there was a fight with Somaliland. I mean, all I am saying is right now....THERE IS NO FIGHTING ANYWHERE. Of course things are far from perfect and lot must be worked on, but ridiculous amounts of money is not being spent on war any longer and money is going into an airport and other projects. First of all those airports were started when Abduallhi Yusuf was the President. Second the situation at that time cause alot of money to be spend on war becasue the state of puntland was in an attack from many sides. From the Arta government in mogudishu, from Somaliland and also from some Puntlanders so why wouldn't the President spend every money that comes in on weapons becasue he had too becasue if he did not Puntland would have been in a different situation today. So brother what you have to understand is that every thing has it's reasons.
