  1. "It is not the first time Mogadishu warlords sabotaged an interim government" This one seems not so easy to sabotage like the other one. But like General Duke said their the least of the TFG worries. The TFG got other important things to worrie about. Like the Somali People no one cares to what a few war-lords think or say.
  2. By Mohamed Olad Hassan Mogadishu, October 3, 2005 (HOL) - Rival militia groups clashed in Somalia's capital, killing at least six people, witnesses and medical officials said, as the sounds of gunfire and explosions were heard throughout Mogadishu. The fighting began on Sunday afternoon when gunmen loyal to a city warlord, Abduqadir Beebe, attacked gunmen loyal to an Islamic court in northern Mogadishu, injuring 10 people, mostly civilians, said witnesses, who did not want to be identified due to fears for their security. The fighting has stopped, but some civilians fled their homes to unknown destinations, fearing that fighting could resume. Witnesses and medical officials, who also spoke anonymously, citing security concerns, said four gunmen were killed in the fighting and two civilians by stray bullets. Somalia descended into lawlessness when clan-based warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned on each other. A transitional government formed in late 2004 after lengthy peace talks in Kenya raised some hope for the Horn of Africa country of seven-million, but its members have been fighting among themselves in recent months. On Saturday, gunmen clashed in the southwestern region of Bakool, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 20 when they fought over trees that are used to make charcoal, said Reconciliation Minister Sheikh Aadan Mohamed Deer. He added that his country has paid all its dues to the joint Arab action institutions, in particular support for the Palestinian Authority budget. (end) mfm. mm KUNA 021544 Oct 05NNNN
  4. KIRKUK, Iraq - Iraq's Kurdish president called on the country's Shiite prime minister to step down, the spokesman for the president's party said Sunday, escalating a political split between the two factions that make up the government. ADVERTISEMENT President Jalal Talabani has accused the Shiite-led United Iraqi Alliance, which holds the majority in parliament, of monopolizing power in the government and refusing to move ahead on a key issue for Kurds, the resettlement of Kurds in the northern city of Kirkuk. "The time has come for the United Iraqi Alliance and the Kurdistan coalition to study Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari's stepping aside from his post," said Azad Jundiyani, a spokesman for Talabani's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. "This is for the benefit of the political process." Jundiyani would not say whether the Kurds would withdraw from the government if the Shiite alliance does not back them in removing al-Jaafari. Talabani has made indirect threats to withdraw from the coalition if Kurdish demands are not met. The two blocs have been the bedrock of the temporary government. Its collapse would add a new layer of political instability and underline how struggles for power are undermining efforts to get Iraq's fractious communities to work together in a new political system. Iraq is holding an Oct. 15 referendum on a new constitution that leaders of Iraq's Sunni Arab minority reject, while it is backed by the Shiites and Kurds. Jawad al-Maliki, a Shiite legislator and a leader in al-Jaafari's Dawaa party, denounced the call. "They should have asked us for that in a legal way, and then we will have discussions," he said. "It is not beneficial for Iraq, especially during this period of time because the country is heading to a referendum and elections."
  5. Reports from Harardhere town in central Somalia say the hijackers who held two ships in that area finally released them and all crew. This sudden move happened after town and area elders persuaded them to do the right thing. Both ships are now on their way to a makeshift port near Mogadishu. The main Mogadishu port has been close for many years. Kenyan registered MV Semlow is carrying WFP humanitarian food for Somalia and has been held since June. It was used by the pirates to hijack the second ship last week. It is not known if ransom money has been paid for the release of either ship. However, Mogadishu business men to whom the cargo on the second ship belonged accused other business men in Mogadishu of being behind the hijackings and warned of a new civil war in Mogadishu unless their ship is released unconditionally. 6. Somalia: Mogadishu strongmen say no to peace Wed. September 28, 2005 02:43 pm. Send this news article Qanyare & Yalahow Faction leaders Muse Sudi Yalahow and Mohamed Qanyare Afrah rejected a proposal from within their alliance that would at least open the communication channel between Mogadishu and Jowhar . Former military man and ruler of Kismayo region, Mr. Barre Adan Shire (Hirale) proposed a dialog between the two sides of the divided Somali government in yesterday’s parliament session. However, these two faction leaders who are members of the parliament and hold ministerial positions in the interim government rejected it . It is not the first time Mogadishu warlords sabotaged an interim government, and now it looks like as if Jowhar camp headed by President Ablulahi Yusuf and Prime Minister Ali Gedi triggered an invisible threshold of which Mogadishu faction leaders must revert to using muscle over brain . They would not refuse any meaningful dialog unless the stakes and the chances to lose are high. Many political annalists say very few individuals with no public support benefit from the chaos and do not want to lose their heavy weaponry and national institutions they have been occupying for so long. Mr. Shire was scheduled to brief the media about his peace proposal but that didn’t happen. His colleagues who did not appreciate the plan to save the interim government convinced at least to delay talking to the media after a long meeting with him today. In the meantime suspicions, accusations and counter accusations fly privately among parliament members Mogadishu. In other developments, public support for the new Mogadishu mayor appointed by the prime minister is said to be increasing. Mogadishu strongmen say no to peace Also a new political and possibly armed group whose agenda is not clear yet was announced in Mogadishu yesterday. News Category: Somalia Send this news article

  14. SOMALIA: Somaliland voters go to the polls - Thursday, September 29, 2005 at 19:24 HARGEYSA, 29 September (IRIN) - Voters in the self-declared republic of Somaliland, northwestern Somalia, went to the polls on Thursday to elect 82 members of parliament. Candidates from the opposition Kulmiye (Solidarity) and the Welfare and Justice parties are challenging those from the ruling party, the Union of Democrats. Some 246 candidates are vying for the parliamentary seats. Some 800,000 of Somaliland's estimated 3.5 million people are eligible to vote. The polls are Somaliland's third since it declared unilateral independence from the rest of Somalia in May 1991, following the collapse of the administration of former President Muhammad Siyad Barre. Somaliland conducted municipal elections in December 2002, which were followed by the presidential poll in April 2003 in which the incumbent, Dahir Riyale Kahin, retained his post. On Thursday, voters started lining up at the territory's 985 polling stations well before they opened officially at 0600 (0300 GMT). Kahin was among the first of senior officials to vote. He and Vice-President Yusuf Ahmed Yassin cast their ballots at a polling station in the civil service headquarters in Hargeysa, the territory's capital. "I hope the legislative election ends in peace," Kahin said after casting his vote. "I wish UDUB [the ruling party] members success. I hope the election will mark the completion of the democratisation process in Somaliland and will open the door for [international] recognition." The leader of the Kulmiye Party, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud "Silanyo", who arrived at the polling station 30 minutes after Kahin had voted, said he regretted the death of three people on Wednesday in a poll-related violence in the town of Burao. "It's unfortunate that such [an] incident occurred," Mohamud "Silanyo" said. "There was a misunderstanding between Kulmiye supporters on how to distribute fuel among them. One among them got angry and opened fire killing three of his colleagues instantly and injuring three others," he added. Justice and Welfare Party leader Faisal Ali Warabe said he was optimistic that the voting process would be smooth. "I expect the process to continue and end smoothly, I anticipate my party to win a majority of the seats because our candidates are independent-minded and not affiliated to any clan," he said. Asked to comment on claims by some other party leaders that he would form a coalition with the ruling party, Warabe said: "All those are baseless allegations and unfounded claims carried by my party detractors with the apparent aim of smearing my party name and me." Authorities restricted the movement of vehicles in a bid to reduce the possibility of voters being transported to other polling stations to try and vote a second time. According to the head of the 74-member foreign poll observer team in Somaliland, Steve Kibble, no major incidents had been reported by midday on Thursday. "So far, since the voting commenced earlier today, I have not received any information indicating there being any obstacles experienced by observers in the six regions. "There are only two minor incidents reported - one in Odweyn District in Toghdeer Region, where our team of observers were unable to reach the destination due to impassable roads after a heavy downpour last night," Kibble said. The other incident was reported in Gabiley District, some 40 km northwest of Hargeysa, where in a fit of rage, a policeman grabbed an empty ballot box and ran with it. The box was later returned. The team of poll monitors is drawn from Britain, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States and Zimbabwe. Several incidents of violence were reported during the campaigns. In addition, the police seized 150 fake ballot papers on 22 September at the territory's main airport. Somaliland has managed to avoid much of the anarchy that has dogged Somalia over the past 15 years. However, the territory is embroiled in a border dispute with the northeastern self-declared semi-autonomous region of Puntland over the regions of Sanaag and Sool. 17. Will our so called leader rise to the occasion, and set aside their personal interests and aambitions? That's the qestion that is on the table to day. I really not think this is the right time to put your personal interests first when a whole nation is waiting on your call for peace. Few guys want to put their personal interests before 10 million Somalians Now that is said.
  18. Statement: MP Wrzesnewskyj addresses Canada's House of Parliament on Somalia - Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at 23:57 HOUSE OF COMMONS DEBATES STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2005 1st SESSION • 38th PARLIAMENT VOLUME 140 • NUMBER 125 SOMALIA Mr. Borys Wrzesnewskyj (Etobicoke Centre, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, the Hon. Sharif Hassan Shaykh Aden, Speaker of the Transitional Federal Parliament of Somalia, is visiting with his Canadian counterparts to share with us the many challenges that his country faces. Just recently I returned from a fact finding mission to Somalia where I saw first-hand the heart-wrenching conditions that are the result of 14 years of civil war and the anarchy of warlordism. I also met with President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, Prime Minister Ali Muhammad Ghedi, as well as many ministers and parliamentarians of the transitional federal government. The message I heard from the Somali people was that their country had arrived at an historic opportunity and that they were awaiting their leaders to rise to the occasion, to set aside their personal interests and ambitions in order to reclaim a future for the people of Somalia and for the children of Somalia. I welcome Speaker Aden and I hope that his visit will give impetus to Canada playing a greater role in civil society building in Somalia during this historic opportunity . Soomaaliyo ha noo laato! 20. Mogadishu leaders turn on Qaynyare..... Qaynyare is not as smart as many other war-lords in Mogadishu he talks smack but can't back it up. Why wouldn't they not turn on him. I would not be suprised if he was killed today. The guys forgets that he is not the leader of Mogadishu, and I think they are tied of him for talking for all of reer Mogadishu every time he comes on a radio station. Because as we know no single men controls Mogadishu so if you talk you talk on behalf of your clan not the city as a whole. Because in Mogadishu everyone is not on the same page.
  21. Great News indeed. bit by bit this government will take it's rigthful place.
