  5. I served as a Teachers Assistant in a First year Discrete Mathematics course for 1 semester. There were a few good students who were interested in learning, but the majority were loud, spoiled, over-grown children. The first year freshmean are usually the worst , because a large portion of them are still in the "I dont know what I want to major in ... so I'll give everything a try" phase. they refuse to listen during the lectures and at the end of the semester they come crying for help. I cannot imagine how much more difficult it would be teach children ... The posters above must have an abundance of patience. It is an important job but not everyone can do it.

  11. Cara That figure contains both civilians and fighters. and keeping in mind the huge difference in men (quantity not quality), Weaponry (airstrike). I think that ratio is pretty impressive .. and goes to show the bravery of the average afghan citizen.

  13. I think Shez makes a good point. She knowigly went to somalia despite all news of war, piracy, kidnapping etc. Shabelle do you know why no news organization requries their journalists to go to somalia ?.. because it is an incridebly foolsih and foolhardy thing to do .... glory is the only motivator that makes sense to me. why would her kidnap come as a surprise to her or anyone else. Frankly I would be very surprised (pleasanlty) if she went to somalia and was not kidnapped that would be news. It is good for her that she harbors no bitterness.
  14. Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan - Following the deadliest day yet for coalition forces seeking to drive the Taliban from the town of Marja in southern Afghanistan, another Western service member was killed Friday by small-arms fire, military officials said. Surprisingly accurate Taliban snipers, together with intricate webs of roadside bombs, slowed the progress of the offensive as it neared the end of its first week. Commanders say key goals are being met, but they acknowledge that clearing operations around the town probably will take about a month. A Western military statement said "determined pockets of resistance" in Marja persisted Friday in the form of sometimes- intense firefights and ambushes. The nationality of the latest fatality was not immediately disclosed, but the circumstances were described as a "small-arms fire attack." U.S. Marines seized a strongly defended compound south of Marja that appeared to have been a Taliban headquarters, the Associated Press reported. They found photos of fighters posing with their weapons, dozens of Taliban- issued ID cards and graduation diplomas from a training camp in Pakistan. A day earlier, six service members with NATO's International Security Assistance Force were killed by explosions and small-arms fire. That doubled the coalition toll to date in the operation, which, including Friday's death, now stands at 12 Western troops and one Afghan soldier killed in action. About 120 insurgents have been killed, Afghan officials estimate. Though the U.S. Marines spearheading the attack in Helmand province are far better trained and armed, the insurgents have had some success with classic guerrilla tactics. Taliban sharpshooters had long had a reputation for being anything but. However, coalition field officers say they have been encountering snipers considerably more skilled -- in part, perhaps, because the insurgents had many months to prepare for this battle. The Marines heavily publicized plans to seize Marja, in hopes that less committed insurgents would leave and civilians in the area would be spared an even bigger battle. As it is, the offensive is the largest since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion that drove the Taliban from power. The Western assault began Feb. 13 with troops being airlifted over Taliban front lines and miles of minefields and dropped in the town center. That tactic was repeated on a much smaller scale Friday, when elite Marine reconnaissance squads were airdropped into areas where snipers were known to be operating, the Associated Press reported. At the outset of the assault, the Marines' commander, Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson, had expressed optimism that key sites could be secured by nightfall of the first day. That goal has largely been achieved, said British Maj. Gen. Nick Carter, who is the top regional commander, but it took nearly a full week of fighting. Carter, speaking Thursday by videolink, told reporters at the Pentagon that the "end of the beginning" was at hand in Marja, but that it probably would take several more weeks to fully secure the town. At this point, coalition troops -- U.S., British and Afghan -- control major roadways and bazaars, and Afghan police have begun arriving to help with the transition from warfare back to some semblance of normal life for residents. Coalition officials hope that attention can be shifted soon to governance-building. As soon as Marja is deemed secure enough, a newly appointed deputy district governor will be brought in to begin overseeing the restoration of public services. During the time that the town has been a Taliban stronghold, schools closed and government authority vanished. Elsewhere in Nad Ali district, where Marja is located, the military said "stabilization projects" such as repairing canals and opening schools had begun. Military officials have also been attending shuras, traditional gatherings of tribal leaders. ah the arrogance and the hubris of falling for your own propaganda ... "We will secure it by nightfall" they said ... not such a walk in the park is it ? It is not called the graveyard of empires for nothing
  15. A move by a French fast-food chain to offer halal menus at a handful of restaurants has some politicians fuming, in the latest row over France's increasingly visible Muslim minority. The Quick chain has taken pork off its menu in eateries in Roubaix, northern France, as well as in Marseille and in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil, to try to tap into the growing market of Muslim customers. But politicians have complained that the switch to no-bacon hamburgers, launched three months ago, is depriving non-Muslims of their right to the standard menu. Roubaix Mayor Rene Vandierendonck plans to file a complaint for discrimination, arguing that non-Muslims now have to trek to the suburbs to get a bacon burger, as Quick is the only fast-food place in the city centre. "I'm not bothered by the fact that there is a halal menu," he said. "But this is going too far because it is the only menu on offer and it has become discrimination." French far-right politician Marine Le Pen suggested the Halal menus were providing a financial boost to Muslim organisations that certify meat as having been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic practices. Ms Le Pen condemned the menu switch as "unacceptable" and denounced a form of "Islamisation". In cities and towns across France, Quick's red-and-white signs are as familiar a sight as McDonald's golden arches, offering the usual array of hamburgers, french fries and soft drinks. But in eight of Quick's 350 restaurants, the "Strong Bacon" double cheese hamburger is not on offer, replaced by a halal version with smoked turkey. One customer was quoted in Le Parisien daily as saying that "it's just not the same". The government has frowned on Quick's decision, suggesting that it was a form of "communautarisme", a pejorative term suggesting that a group is exhibiting a ghetto attitude. Series of controversies Home to Europe's biggest Muslim minority, estimated at between 5 and 6 million, France has been caught up in a series of controversies that have highlighted its unease with Islam in a strictly secular society. President Nicolas Sarkozy's government is drafting legislation to ban the wearing of the full Islamic veil and is sponsoring a debate on national identity that has exposed fears about immigration. Responding to the hubbub over the halal hamburgers, the head of France's Muslim Council called for reason to prevail and announced that he planned to meet with Quick's owners. "Halal and kosher restaurants have been around for a long time," he said. "Quick is the first fast-food chain to offer a full halal menu but it is only in a few of its restaurants. "There are plenty of restaurants that do not offer halal meals and Muslims are not complaining of discrimination." Quick manager Luc Demain, who runs the outlet in Roubaix among others, said there had been a slight increase in business since the new halal menus had been introduced and that he had not received complaints from customers. Lionnel Lucca, a deputy from Sarkozy's right-wing UMP party, has called for a boycott of Quick to press for "freedom of choice to be restored" at the fast-food outlets.
  16. Now the mayor of houstan, the department of Homeland security and the manistream news. are trying to aviod using the magic word 'Terrorism' I guess that only applies if you are a muslim. lets review this F'ed up scanario Suicide Note 200 Innocent civilians intention to cause widepsread terror and panic using an airoplance as a projectile aimed at a public building so why doesnt this qualify as terrorism ?
  17. (CNN) -- An Austin, Texas, resident with an apparent grudge against the Internal Revenue Service set his house on fire Thursday and then crashed a small plane into a building housing an IRS office with nearly 200 employees, officials said. Federal authorities identified the pilot of the Piper Cherokee PA-28 as Joseph Andrew Stack, 53. Two people were injured and one person was missing, local officials said. There were no reported deaths. A message on a Web site registered to Stack appears to be a suicide note. "If you're reading this, you're no doubt asking yourself, 'Why did this have to happen?' " the message says. "The simple truth is that it is complicated and has been coming for a long time." In the lengthy, rambling message, the writer rails against the government and, particularly, the IRS. See text of the note (PDF) The building into which the airplane crashed is a federal IRS center with 199 employees. Austin (Texas) Accidents and Disasters "I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different," the online message says. "I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let's try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well." Two people were transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge, said hospital spokeswoman Matilda Sanchez. She could not provide additional information. University Medical Center Brackenridge is the only Level 1 trauma center for adults in Austin. St. David's Medical Center, the other major hospital in the area, said it had not received any patients. Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell said one person remained unaccounted for Thursday afternoon. Witnesses described an infernal scene that shook nearby buildings and sent fire and smoke bellowing into the sky. "I just saw smoke and flames," said CNN iReporter Mike Ernest. "I could not believe what I was seeing. It was just smoke and flames everywhere." The crash occurred around 10 a.m. (11 a.m. ET). Firefighters used two ladder trucks and other equipment to hose down the blaze at the Echelon office building, which police said is in the 9400 block of Research Boulevard. The flames seemed mostly extinguished about 75 minutes later. The FAA said preliminary information indicated the plane departed Georgetown Municipal Airport north of Austin about 9:40 a.m. CT. Jack Lillis, an attendant at Georgetown airport, said initial indications are that the flight originated there but there were conflicting reports and he could not verify that information. The pilot evidently did not file a flight plan, the FAA said. No flight plan was required because flights Thursday morning were under visual flight rules, or VFR, because of clear weather. Leffingwell downplayed any possible terrorism links to the crash. "It is an isolated incident," the mayor said. "The people of Austin, the people of the nation, are in no danger whatsoever." He added that "there is evidence that the gas tank was just about full. ... That amount of gasoline ... can do a lot of damage." Two F-16 fighter jets were sent from Houston as a precaution, but federal authorities said preliminary information did not indicate any terrorist connection to the crash. "We do not yet know the cause of the plane crash," the Department of Homeland Security said in a release. "At this time, we have no reason to believe there is a nexus to terrorist activity. We continue to gather more information, and are aware there is additional information about the pilot's history."
  18. ^ You have trouble with comprehension abti. That sentence that you based your entire rant on is not something I came up with .. if you scroll up a little more you will see this Originally posted by LayZie G.: They are not threatenening to Kill the young Imam because he spoke ill of the quranic teachings or called the prophet names but simply telling the truth that 'NIQAB HAS NO PLACE IN THIS WORLD OR THE NEXT'.(nada)= death put aside the fact that L.G still cannot tell the difference between the niqaab and the burga which further highlights the ignorance I was talking about she has been shown time and again that her claims i.e burqa being anti-islam are bogus. that is the meaning of your little red selection. adigu gaal baad tahay Johhnny you have much bigger problems to worry about than a mere burqa. you do not even believe in the existence of the almighty creator .. so why should the minutie of a religion you do not believe in concern you ? in other words why should I indulge you in a discussion of what constitutes a hijab in Islam and what does not .. if you are not a Muslim to begin with ?
  19. L.G if this is not some more of your typical drama queen posts and you are not just putting on a show for us .. you seriously need some help. you've beaten this issue to death and you refuse to listen to any reason. you have a minimal understanding of Islam just enough to be dangerous but not enough to know that you are digging yourself into a hole. many nomads have patiently (ibti gets most of the credit here) walked you through the reasoning of why the burqa is not anti-islam and the and held your hand every step of the way .. but you are either too dense to comprehend how ridiculous your stance is, or you know and are just addicted to the attention. you've started multiple threads on this same issue you were engaged in each one ... and when you were shown the weakness of your logic you run away and start a new thread. please tell me why anyone should engage in a serious debate with you ? if you are incapable or unwilling to coherently defend your position and as soon as your backed into a corner disappear for a few days only to return with more of this nonsense.

  22. "Alysia, another divorced Somali woman driven into prostitution, said she had paid smugglers to take her on the perilous voyage across the Gulf of Aden to Yemen. "I have to take care of my son. I have to buy him milk," she said." contrary to what you may infer from my posts .. I have sympathy for these people in this rough spot but they share a large portion of the blame. The truth of matter is, If you have the money to pay smugglers .. in my books you are not starving. as I said before brother you are all arguing on the grounds that it is a means of survival and I'm saying survival is possible back home for someone who has the means to to pay thousands of dollars to smugglers .. but if it is about making a little more money or searching for a better life ... then do you still think the end justify the means ?
  23. I disagree walaal. it is an accurate analogy because they use the same arguments as the people in this thread. The problem I have with this whole story is much larger than prostitution and is not confined to women ... putting yourself in a situation where it is sure suicide is much worse and that included both men and women .. I knew people who perish on these ratty boats, another guy who died of thirst in the sahara while traveling to Libya from Sudan because the car broke down ... many friends, even an entire family wiped out on the boat two years ago heading out from Libya to Italy. this is not just 1 or 2 cases and they all had it much better back home .. none of them lived in anything like they hell-hole they live in yemen that is described here ... yet they chose to put themselves at risk and in these situations. how many families have escaped the daily choas in mugadisho the last few years and have found peaceful and stable residence in puntland and somaliland and other areas of the country. even worse people fleeing from the relatively peacful and stable areas of puntland and somaliland to go to yemen.. tell me what do they have to fear ? what unbearable condition can they be in to justify this ? .. they are starving is not a sufficient answer .. the real people who are starving back home cannot afford the thousands of dollars needed to get to these places. now I haven't been back home for the last 2 years .. and unless things have drastically changed and I'm not aware of ... it has never got to the point where living in Somalia is worse than depending on prostitution for your daily livelihood. The madness of it all is some of them get deported back to Somalia and then put together a few thousand dollars to go back to the same wretched place. Dua and Symapthy for these sisters is well and good lakin runta inaan ka xishono mahan for the fear of appearing politically incorrect.
  24. I just had a look through this thread. and I'm surprised at the number of otherwise reasonable nomads .. defending prostitution as a necessity. this is the same kind of garbage in rap lyrics .. where each 'gangsta' claims to be forced into dealing drugs to make some money because he had no alternative. No doubt some of the refugees have no where else to go .. but I personally know a large number of people who do not fall into the category you are lavishing your pity on. back home they have .. relative security, food, house, monthly remittance etc. but the lure of dhoof is the only thing putting them in that situation so "they were forced into prostitution doesn't" fly there are few things which are rendered permissible due to necessity .. for example eating pork is permissible if there is no alternative ... but prostitution does not fall under this category.
