First of all, who said anything about the Ulema? Writting your opinion on the content of a Fatwa is not tantamount to an unscrupulous attack on the Ulema as a whole. Only this particular Fatwa and it's authors. But let me ask you this question, since it appears you hold the Ulema in high regard. Can one be a muslim and reject the Ulema? Have you read any of the great works of the Ulama, the many volumes that scholars like Ghazzali, Suyuti, Asqalani,Nawawi, Shafi etc, Yes except for Suyuti and Nawawi. What's your point? Do you know that many of the Scholars of today have to Memorize some of these volumess works to be a scholar, on top of quran and hadith? Well that is just not smart, is it? Why would they need to memorize when there are innumerable copies of all the works they're required to memorize? I doubt if that is still done.
  3. Loooooooooooooooool!!!! These wadaads must have lost their clothes then! Originally posted by ibtisam: why don't they do something constractive and help the poor, instead of arguing about issues which are beyond their control or small issues like what colour your scraf has to be, or how long ur miswaq should be. good gosh, get a life  I wondered about that countless times. How come they never issue fatwas against poverty, poor health, government mismanagement of resources, nepotism, abject living standards and so on... so many issues that need urgent attention from supposedly 'learned' Wadaads. Instead, whether 'holy' couple's eyes should glance over their respective genitals or not is what captures their attention. Very hinky!

It's not my favourite genre, just letting nomads in on one of the life-affirming truths.

  9. Originally posted by Afronaut: What you call opinion is really commonsense sir. No it isn't. Common sense neither makes sense nor is common. It is idiotic and wrong most of the time. I asked for your opinion based on what you know, something human beings do all the time. This is why I'm here, to exchange ideas with OTHERS. Not read lines from pre-written scripts, get hurled at with boring homilies. If its ok to obey the commonlaw in Ottawa, why then would it be different from the laws passed in say Qabridahare? Because common laws are designed to keep law and order, settle disputes, right wrongs, prevent future disputes etc. Their purpose is not to score good points with your creator or fulfill religious obligation. That is private matter between the believer and his creator. In the Quran it says there is no compulsion in religion. Meaning: how one worships his creator is entirely up to him/her. Clearly you can't be serious in comparing God's laws with man-made laws, are you  Doing so will only open a pandora's box, where every God's law is compared with man-made law and vice versa. You got the standard for compare and contrast backwards! BTW, I'm not disputing wether the Hijab is religious obligation or not. It can be argued either way but that is not my point. My issue is with the forceful imposition of the Hijab on EVERY women whether she agrees or not. This is not hypothetical case at all. Look at countries where the Hijab is requirement for every woman by LAW. Every women has to wear the Hijab, there are no exceptions. Not even for nonmuslims! How can it be forceful imposition if it becomes a LAW? I think that is what you need to understand. Nope, think about it little bit harder! A LAW delineates what CAN be done and what CAN'T be done. Usually there are many options available to the individual except what is decreed as unlawful. For example, laws for driving. As is, the laws in the books impose limitation over certain speeds. For eminently self-evident reason of limiting/avoiding accidents. Agree or disagree, this doesn't take away from the driver the right to drive at other speeds, drive any kind of car he likes, drive where you like (except for few places) etc. The bottom line is there must be options for women as how they should dress. Naked as a jaybird is not the only alternative to the Hijab, you know? There is a wide boulevard of garments for a woman to choose from. And it should be up to to them whether to wear the Hijab or not. Not on society, not on decrees from self appointed Allah's interlocutors or usual garden variaty of hollier than thou, I'm closer to Allah then you, cosmic debris spitting hucksters. No choice = oppression.
  10. Originally posted by Kashanre: even after it has clearly been showin that it is a choice they are still adamently opposed to it in the name of "freedom", ma wax kalay ka hari? That is load of crock! Where has it been shown?!?!? If there is a freedom of choice, I doubt this discussion would exist. All you and other proponents of the Hijab have been doing all this time is futz around this poignant point, repeatedly asked: what choice is there in Sharia Law as to what women wears? [qbMy suspicion is some are agnostic, clearly it shows and Allah (SWT) will have the final judgement of them... [/QB] Maybe. But there is no shadow of a doubt that some are wafflers. I'm not saying who.
  11. Originally posted by Haniif: quote: I'm for choice but there is no choice in Sharia law. You know that, right? Everyone must don the Hijab whether they agree or not. Is that true? There is no choice under Sharia law to wear the hijab for a women? That she has to wear it even if she doesn’t agree to that? Yes and to the best of my knowledge even non-muslims (Christians, jews etc) have to wear them. Interesting, isn't it? It's touted by its ardent supporters as fulfilling Allah's will (which I don't buy mostly BTW, especially from men) but nonmuslim women must wear it too.
  12. Originally posted by Kashafa: The fact of the matter is, there's no Sharia-run country today(don't even say Saudi, Why ? different topic for a different day). The Iranians would disagree with you. So would the now-gone Taliban. But but I KNOW what you'll retort, "they're not practing real sharia, the Iranians aren't Sunnis blah blah blah." Who's to decide? You? There is no body, not a single entity, who garners wide support and allegiance of muslims. Where ever Sharia Law is to be practiced, it will be at the whims of the local imams/scholars, interpreting through the looking glass of their culture, sect, prejudices etc. This will ineluctably result in some local prejudices (ie towards women) creeping in. What's there to filter pure prejudice towards selected group (ie women, minorities etc) from legit Islamic credos? The only plausible solution I can think of is what the leader of Libya, Qaddafi, proposed. Namely, that there be female advisory (maybe governing?) counsel with the power to veto any law they deem is unfair to women and having no basis in Islam. THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL DRESS CODE FOR THE HIJAB. HIJAB HAS A SET OF PARAMETERS Of course there is, the Hijab by definition is a headscarf worn by muslim women only. Therefore, it IS universal in that sense. If I tell you to go and pick a girl from the airport wearing a Hijab, would any girl not wearing a headscarf be an option? Of course not. How long, what color, whether it covers the whole face and body or not is beside the point. You're just being punctilious. You KNOW what Hijab is and looks like, so lets not beat around the bush.
  13. Originally posted by Afronaut: Its not a str8 non ducking answer sxb. You're futzing around despite a plea not to. It is simple question really. If a muslim girl in SHARIA run country (I understand wearing the hijab is voluntary everywhere else), refuses the Hijab for whatever reason, what do you suggest be done with her? I know you don't have authoritative answer, maybe not know the ins and outs of Sharia law and any answer you give will be speculative and based on your opinion. That is fine. Go ahead and speculate, opine. That is what opinions forums like this one are for. So, will the recalcitrant girl be jailed, fined or beaten? Keep in mind, the bone of contention here for me is not if the Hijab is Islamic obligation or not. That is moot point but hither and thither. I don't have a problem with any muslim girl who wants to wear Hijab out of her own will. It is her God given right. It is the forceful imposition of universal dress code for one sex who, for eminently self-evidence reasons obvious to all, don't all share a unison view on proper Islamic apparel.

  15. Originally posted by xiinfaniin: Now, why a simple application of Islamicly imposed attire causes all this fuss? That question has been answered a zillion times before. You're denying, as it would the case in Sharia run country that you and others are promoting, women the choice of dress. Why is that so hard for you to unerstand? If wearing the Hijab in your Utopian dream kingdom is optional, then there is no dissonance here. We're in agreement and the Hijab becomes an issue for women. My beef here is the forceful imposition of arbitrary dress laws. In this age and day not knowing the essentials of your faith is no excuse. Go and learn. I know enough. I have finessed the art of Islamic hermeneutics and exegesis. I'm so good, gray haired Imaams refer undecipherable texts to me. Plan to learn more though, Insha'allah. The issue here isn't faith but worship of man. I refuse to worship man. I won't obey the dictates of another man telling me how to worship my creator. You’re partly wrong for your objections are pure desire for style, and, to top it, you seem inconsiderate to the other’s choice of dress. Attacking the wrong hill again. My objection to the Hijab has never been for aesthetic reasons. Prove me otherwise. But it's funny you used the word choice. Tell what you'd do with a muslim woman in Sharia country that refuses to wear the Hijab. No ducking, give me straight answer. Will you beat them, jail them, fine them.

Are you saying Somali men can't speak up for the rights of Somali women? They are after all their mothers, sisters, relatives and fellow compatriots. If you are, then that is intellectually untenable position you take. It is like saying white Americans have no rights standing up for black American civil rights. Imagine if they actually did that, not join the protest for equal righs, it's doubtful currents rights minorities enjoy today would be possible. Idem for women's right in america as well. Femme Fatale, I'm no thief but I'm against thievery and thiefs. Tell me why I shouldn't be concerned about the imposition of dress codes on half of my fellow nomads? Its funny that the same people who advocate for women's choices and rights don't accept the fact that they want to cover up but would rather strip them down to their likings. I wouldn't be one of those people. I fully respect however way women chooses to dress. It's between them and their creator. I'm simply against the imposition of dress laws by some. I'm for choice but there is no choice in Sharia law. You know that, right? Everyone must don the Hijab whether they agree or not.
  18. Originally posted by Kashanre: So somehow you know what Somali want or how they think  No, not at all. A complete mischaracterization of what I said that has left me scratching my head since I said nothing to that effect. I simply recounted popularity or lack of for the Hijab in pre-war Somalia. Pointing out, to the best of my knowledge, there were no dress laws. So based on history, I can say Somali women chose the traditional, local attire over the Hijab. That is simple reiteration of historical fact. Whether they will make the same choice in the future, I don't honestly know. One thing you cannot say is anyone forces our woman to wear the hijaab. So far, true. But not likely when Rahima and Sharia people come the law. She, Rahima, is on record saying she's for Sharia and would have no qualms in foisting her choice for dress on ALL Somali girls. This is a view shared by most Sharia people.

  21. Originally posted by Rahima: then again it would be silly to take your thoughts on Islam seriously Of course, same for you as well. Ditto for the billion and one other self proclaimed Allah's interlocutors. The only thoughts that matter are that of silent masses. What do they want, the somali women that is, what do they think? Fact1 : if Sharia law was to rule future Somali state, every woman will be forced by threats of violence to wear the Hijab. Just look at Iran and now toppled Afghan Taliban ragime. That is what Sharia law at practice will look like. And don't you dare deny it! Fact2 : when somali women had the freedom to dress as they liked, they choose to wear the dirac instead of the sand pyramids. There was no threats of violence (to the best of my knowledge) if they dressed otherwise. That should give you a hint as to how somali women would dress if given the freedom.
  22. Lander, It would be mistake to think Canadian and American convservatives are comparable on major issues. They aren't. Canadian conservatives are closer to US Democrats then republicans. While socially conservative on issues like family, gun ownership, justice, immigration etc... they're fiscally centrist or center right. Their major campaign promise is to strengthen Health Care -- the invention of the left. They want to cut taxes but so do the left-of-center Liberals. In Canada, we don't really have a Righwing party. We have far left party in the New Democrats. And no Rightwing or Leftwing party will likely get elected in this country. If you wanna win in Canada and in most countries of the West, you gotta fashion yourself as centrist. The general public is disenchanted with extreme politics. I haven't decided if I'll vote for them though.

  24. I haven't decided who to vote for yet. Liberals or Conservatives as the only serious candidates doesn't help me resolve my indecision. There is no way I can vote the New Democrats, they're too far to the left and if elected we'll likely ruin the economy. The separatist are out of the question for obvious reasons. Right now, I'm leaning towards voting for the Liberals. It's feasible I change my mind and vote for the conservative. I don't buy all 'hiden agenda' they supposedly holding from the Liberals.
