A historical advanced medical surgery was performed in Manhal Hospital in Hargeisa on Tuesday on people with liver and intestine illnesses. A medical team from Somaliland and Yemen used laser technology to performed the first laparotomy surgery in the country on ten people to treat them from gallbladder and internal organs diseases including liver and intestines. In a press conference, the head of Manhal City Hospital Dr. Yasin Abdi inform the press that this was a historical event and that Tuesday’s surgery was the first of its kind in Somaliland. According to Dr. Abdi the surgery will give thousands of Somalilanders an opportunity to get free medical laser surgery. Dr. Abdi described how using this technology will reduce risk to patients and dramatically decrease healing time after the surgery. “Inserting mini-laparotomy tubal ligation into sensitive area in the stomach and liver, and observing that through monitor make it easy for us to treat people more efficiently and accurately. Before this technology, doctors performed open surgery on people, which is riskier and can lead to other complication,” he told local press. People who receive this type of surgery recover in two days instead of a week without this procedure. This is the second time that Manhal medical center brought doctors from other countries to perform free surgeries in Somaliland. The foreign doctors usually train local medical professionals in performing sophisticated surgeries. Manhal medical center is planning to bring doctors who will perform heart surgery in Somaliland in mid-June. Manhal Hospital has treated so far over 40,000 people with different medical needs including poor vision, glaucoma, and other general illnesses. Manhal Hospital is run by Al-Manhal Islamic Society and has good ties with the medical professions in number of Arab states. It was not long ago when Yemen opened a liaison office in Hargeisa and this is the first time Yemeni doctors visited the country.

SOMALILAND: Sool elders hold secret meetings with Al Shabab MOGADISHU (Somalilandpress) — Members of ***********’s religious order and elders have been holding a secret meeting organised by Banadir Islamic Society with Al Shabab in Somalia’s capital for the past week. The meeting which was spearheaded by Sheikh Ali Muhammad Hassan, head of Banadir Islamic Society, took place in Mogadishu and brought together members of *********** clan from Sool region in Somaliland and senior members of Al Shabab group. The *********** delegation was led by Mr Ahmed Abdullahi Shanlo, who is an important elder in the tribe and Ali Abdalla Hassan, an intellectual and religious figure. The group praised al shabab for their holy war in Somalia and said they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the radical group and their “Islamic agenda” for the region. Mr Shanlo compared their religious war with that one Muhammad Abdullah Hassan (Mad Mullah) has waged against the British, Italians and the Ethiopians at the end of the eighteenth century. Mr Shanlo described the current war Al Shabab is waging as just and holy. Many believe Muhammad Abdullah Hassan and Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd’Allah (the Mahdi), a Sufi Sheikh of the Samaniyya order in Sudan to have inspired Al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. Mohammad Abdullah Hassan received most of his religious training in what is present day Saudi Arabia, where he studied a fundamentalist brand of Islam called Salihiya, a neo-Sufis teachings similar to the Wahhabism. When Muhammad Abdullah returned to Somaliland he created a religious split among the Somalis between Salihiya and pro-Qadiri brotherhood which led to armed confrontations. Mohammad and his darwish (dervish) army were eventually defeated in 1920. Mr Hassan on his part requested support from al shabab against a recent Ethiopian forces that crossed into the town of Buhodle, the traditional home of Sayid Abdullah. Ethiopia recently established a military post just in the outskirts of Buhodle that has largely angered the locals. The two sides clashed about two weeks ago when the army seized at least 17 transport vehicles. The Ethiopians have since taken the transport across the border and into the town of Jigjiga (see Hundreds flee their homes in Buhodle). Sheikh Ali Muhammad Hassan praised the *********** kinsmen for the recent clash with the Ethiopians in the town that left at least 13 dead and over 30 hurt. In the end all parties agreed there was need to spread the Quran throughout the region. The *********** clans mainly inhabit parts of Sanag and Sool in Somaliland’s eastern regions. The clan is currently divided between pro-Somaliland, Somalia, Puntland and Islamists groups that operate in Somalia’s south. Al Shabab and some members of the *********** clan including the SSC who operate under the Northern Somalia Unionist Movement (NSUM) want to spoil the presidential elections in Somaliland by targeting polling stations, transportation and the military personnel in Sool and Sanag regions. Both Sool and Sanag regions are within Somaliland but small members of the locals want to be part of Mogadishu.

Madar is a highly skilled artist from Berbera, Somaliland. When he was just 5 years old, he moved to Hargeysa and has lived there ever since. Madar’s paintings usually depict the life and culture in Somaliland/Somalia, as well as Kenya and Ethiopia. He pursues his art with great determination and passion. Please meet Madar Osman. When did you discover you were and artist? In 1998 at Sheik Madar Intermediate School when my teacher Abdullahi Hassan, the head master, began to push me to wake up earlier than the other students to paint the inside of the classroom. How has your work changed over time? I started with Crayola (crayons) and not paints. I use any kind of paint I can see like house paints. I would like to do sculpture someday. Art is endless, it is ever going and I like to push it because art is endless. I like Picasso. I like to see foreign artists because we do the same work here and art has no end. Who is your greatest supporter? My mom. She did not like art at first but said she would rather see me doing art than getting into trouble. She is really amazed now. She didn’t think it would be like this and now (realizes) it is very important work. How long have you had your own art studio? 5 years. Most of my time as an artist I spent with an artist group. We would move from here to Berbera and paint together for 2 months at a time. Everyday you see changes in your work because working together makes you realize your errors. By looking at each other’s work we all grow because you learn from each other. Are you a full-time artist? Yes I am, and I would like to continue this for the rest of my life. It’s not only for my daily living, it’s my passion. What are the benefits and challenges of being an artist in Somaliland? Every artist likes to be the first. The first on TV, the first on the radio etc. About 25% of people say they don’t like our work, saying that it is not good for religion or culture. I’ve been asked to cover the hair on a drawing or told that the clothing was too tight. But most support us because they like to see our culture. Where have you shown your work? One art show by UNDP in 2001. Each artist exhibited a piece about how to tackle poverty. Then they bought all of the work. I have also shown in Somaliland, on the side of the road. When we sell artwork to others, they give our contact information to our friends abroad. When they come into town, they contact us. What kind of an impact would you like to make with your artwork in society and the world? To see more female artists in Hargeisa. I’ve never seen that before. Lots ask to be taught but never come back for lessons. They may not come back because they feel ashamed to be with guys. What are your greatest goals for your work, and how can Afrikanation help you? To be an art manager or an art teacher. I would like to see in Hargeisa, a national art gallery showing sculptures and paintings. That is the beginning of my dream. It will be the first organization (of its kind) established in Hargeisa. It can help boys and girls to prepare artwork to be seen internationally and in different regions. I hope the organization can be the first to make my dreams come true.
