As much as I hate the idea of Somalis even contemplating suicide bombing, it is not out of the question some of us are capable of it. Unlike Jamaal, I believe it is possible for this guy to be a Somali, born and raised in Somalia. No one really knows why anyone would do such a thing. And to trivialize it by the reward of 17, 71 or 711 virgins is asinine. Humans have been commiting both suicides and homicides since day one. Combining the two is no DNA sequencing or rocket science.

Nah, just wondering why that dude is making it a big deal.

Jamaal, are you saying that some people (not Somalis) are genetically predisposed to blowing themselves up?

Since MI6 and the FBI are probably reading this forum, we should emphasize the above and get them off our backs. :D

Not a problem. Glad you did.

    1. Killing civilians is wrong (anywhere in the world).

Not only is that true but it does not exclude the fact that it is sometimes done intentionally for whatever reason.

    2. What happened in London and Iraq are two distinctly different things. Though there is a link between them, it should not matter to us (as Muslims) when we make our judgment on each.

Muslim or not, people see the link and judgements are made using all available evidence, of which the link is an integral part.

    3. People that try to excuse one with the other are being duplicitous.

    I disagree.

    4. If one is talking from a Western, political, left-wing or right-wing point of view then number 2 above becomes null and void.

I agree and I am in this camp.

    5. Indifference in this case is also duplicitous.

    True.

    6. Muslims that say there is nothing wrong with Islam then sit back and watch while rogue elements hijack the faith and use it for political reasons are duplicitous.

They are only as duplicitous as those who protested, in London and elsewehere, against the war in Iraq but their governments (the rougue elements) hijacked their foreign policy to invade Iraq.

    7. In all our discussions on this subject in these forums so far. I was lucky enough to encounter few reasonable people. Alas, I also had to deal with many duplicitous people and a couple that were obtuse.

    Perfect Gaussian distribution.

Fidel, Would you please, in a few sentences explain what NGONGE's point is?

    These are Ngonge's points:

    1) Specifically targeting the innocent for killing is immoral and unacceptable. 2) Doing the above in the name of Islam is a major exercise in duplicity. 3) Equating the killing of the innocent outside of war (such as in London and other cities not currently experiencing declared conflict), to the unintentional death of civilians in a war is a cowardly abomination.

I say, if we only agree on the definitions of declared war, as opposed to naked aggression, occupations and illegal invasions, we'd go a long way down this path. In addition, if admit that the London and other bombings are not occuring in vacuum and that they are in fact related to the invasion of Iraq, we are even further down the path. Finally, if we understand that war, even declared ones, have attrocities, crimes and intentional targeting of civilians (think Saigon, Hiroshima, even London in WW2, etc..), we will reach the end of the path.

I think we should talk about sex. We will have far greater concensus on it than any other subject on earth.

:D The floor is yours! [/QB]

Yeah... Sex is great. A daily dose of it is ideal.

They do if you meet certain income restrictions. I know. For example, where I live, if your income falls below the family poverty minimum, you can get subsidized child care, housing and such. Unfortunately, I do not qualify for that. Which kinda sucks!

According to the Gaussian distribution (the bell curve), some of us are certainly obtuse.

I don't mean to trivialize your response, Viking, but we are not all obtuse and we're not all astute.

Ngonge has a point. He's been trying to hammer it in for weeks now. I think I got it and I appreciate his fervor. I personally believe he's off the point on some issues and certainly dead on on others. But what I believe is irrelavant in the great scheme of things. We should all cool off on this terrorism matter for we have discussed it till some of us are black and the rest are blue.

That's where I buy all of my books. You can try your local libraries but I doubt they'll carry it. Here's a link to a store that carries it in Minneapolis, MN. That may not help if you're not in Minneapolis. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/OopBooks/oopResultsIsbn.asp?userid=VQ2z6bsBcu&wid=75230492&origean=9781569022191&wbflg=N&page=%2Fbooksearch%2Fisbninquiry%2Easp

    Fidel,

Now I wonder if I repeated my questions from the previous thread, are you going to engage me or will you run like Haddad did?

No running. Note to self: park a$$ here!

Never mind, I’ll ask anyway. We already know who the invaders of Iraq are,

    We sure do.

but, who are these people that blow up trains and kill civilians?

Insurgents, mujahideen, rebels and fragmented nationalists.

Is there a way of finding them and fighting back?

Yes. It's called MOABs, the mother of all bombs, also referred to as carpet bombing.

Did the air bombing set out to kill civilians

Yes. It is used as a tool of fear. You cannot pacify the enemy without it.

or were they merely “collateral damage

There is no such thing. Even before the first bomb was dropped in Iraq, there was talk of how many will fall victims to them. Collateral damage is a nice, neat way of packaging a calculated and brutal act.

Remember, we are making moral judgments here, intention matters.

Intentions, unfortunately, do not matter. The road to hell is paved with them. Instead, I now prefer conducting moral equivalency tests. Moral judgements are subjective, personal and much more difficult to guage relative to equivalency tests.

Yesterday, another terrorist attack took place in Egypt. Eighty eight people are reported dead so far. Few foreigners and many Egyptians! Was this too the result of the Iraq occupation?

Possibly. It may also be related to Palestine. Remember, just like the war on terror is being fought on many fronts, so is the war on the war on terror.

Could this too be brushed away with simple definitions of ‘terrorism’?

I'm not sure what the simple definition of terrorism is but that bombing has already been labelled as a terrorist act in western media. See terrorism is funny in that when we perpetrate it, it's a legitimate action for democracy, freedom or even oil. When they do the same thing, it's an immoral act fueled by maniacs in the name of a devilish religion.

I do believe your arguments are still sound. Even if we disagree on a couple of major points. I think that's cool.

  13. It's a very complex issue Xiin. That opinion of the writer we find appealing because it echoes our sentiments. Westerners do not relate to us. We are of a different color, culture, race and religion. Their pre-existing prejudices are what politicians are feeding off. We don't relate to them either. We find them to be ignorant of the world, racist, corrupt and immoral. A long way we have to go before these walls are torn down. Of course, there is the greed element and that will never change. Is the prognosis for the future depressing and grim? Sure. Has it always been like this? Yes. What can any one person do? Damned if I know.
