  1. Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, has regularly been referred to as "the most dangerous capital city on earth", but as a degree of stability returns to the area, places of peace can be found among the physical destruction and human suffering. The atmosphere changed completely when we entered the cathedral. Things fell quiet. It felt almost peaceful. The nervous, frantic movement of people, animals and vehicles on the streets outside did not follow us. The hysterical beeping of horns fell away, as did the sound of gunfire. My five Somali bodyguards - wrapped in long, heavy necklaces of brass bullets - did not spring into position around me. They bent their heads towards the smashed floor of the cathedral and walked alongside me. It was Ramadan in Mogadishu - the holy Muslim month - and we were inside the remains of what had once been one of the grandest Catholic cathedrals in the whole of Africa, built by Italian colonialists in the 1920s. Its last bishop, Salvatore Colombo, was murdered there in 1989 as he was giving mass. Click Back in the day

  9. Xamar waa juud kama juud, destroyed and built so many times. All due with respect to all Somali cities or tribal capitals, there's no place like the city by the sea aka the Pearl. Every other Somali city will just have to settle for the second.
  10. ^Noted. Soon they will be getting their instructions from Mrs Clinton.
  11. Aw Xiin......I think we need to stop pretending Somalis or their 'leaders' have say over what happens in Somalia or who leads the country. Sharif was rescued by the West when he fled after the courts were dismantled and was put in power by the same west. No matter how much money he has or how many MPs he bribes, at the end his fate will be decided by others.
  12. Meles Zenawi: Ethiopian leader 'getting better Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is in "a good condition and recuperating", a government spokesman has told the BBC, dismissing reports he is critically ill. However, Bereket Simon declined to give any details about Mr Meles' whereabouts or what he is suffering from. Mr Bereket had earlier been quoted as saying the prime minister, 57, was on holiday. Speculation began when he missed last month's African Union summit. There were reports that Mr Meles was in hospital in Belgium, suffering from a stomach complaint. But Mr Bereket was quoted as saying by The Reporter newspaper that opposition forces were trying to "create confusion" by talking about the prime minister's health. He told the BBC Focus on Africa programme it was "not useful" to provide more details. When asked who was in charge while Mr Meles was being treated, he replied: "The status quo is maintained - there is no change and there will be no change in the near future." It is believed that Mr Meles' last public appearance was at the G20 talks in Mexico in June. He took power as the leader of a rebel movement which ousted the communist government of Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991. He has won several elections since then, but his political opponents have accused him of using repression to retain power. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-19078358
  13. Thegobannimoview, Part III Abdirazak Haji Hussen, Fmr Prime Minister of the Somali Republic (hussen100@yahoo.com), & Dr Aweys O. Mohamoud (AWEYS6@AOL.COM), Founder of Gobannimo Institute,[1] 27thJuly 2012 We argue in this paper that the enduring conflict in Somalia has become so entrenched and zero-sum in nature that it is beyond outsider – or inside – management without first attenuating the continuing intra- and inter-*******-****** factionalised struggles and rivalry outbidding. The issues at the heart of this rivalry are particularly difficult and intractable because they’re based on psychological factors, are more symbolic in nature and thus more complicated to manage. We, therefore, call upon the newly appointed members of the post-TFG parliament to elect competent and meritorious individuals from non-******* and non-****** clans as President and Parliamentary Speaker to defeat the “wedge politics” of division and rivalry, and to usher in a new era of compromise, trust, and cooperation in the political process. We also call on the newly elected President of Somalia to appoint as Prime Minister an upright and competent Somali citizen from non-******* and non-****** clan background to forge a sense of common purpose in the new administration and to deliver credible executive leadership to theSomali people.
