  9. Qatar Charity’s (QC) office in Somalia, in co-operation with the Benadir Regional Administration opened a dispensary in Wadjer, an impoverished neighbourhood in Mogadishu. Nearly 93,000 needy people are expected to benefit from the health services. Most residents of the area are poor and suffer from the lack of basic health services, as they are not able to afford the costs of private hospitals, QC said in a statement. The 300sq m dispensary is expected to provide the required health services, mostly for children, women and elderly. The opening ceremony was attended by a number of Somali ministers and local figures, including Abdurahman Yarisow, governor and mayor of Mogadishu, who lauded the Qatari donations that contribute to helping the needy. The ceremony was also attended by Osman Mohamed Abdi, deputy minister of ports and marine resources, who noted the importance of the development and relief projects implemented by QC for the benefit of the Somali people. In February, QC’s office in Somalia handed over three ambulances to hospitals in Mogadishu to support the country’s health services. The ambulance donation came at a time when many hospitals in Somalia were suffering from a severe shortage in the patient transport services, especially for urgent cases, as many vehicles were not designed to provide first aid, which had maximised the risk to the lives of many patients. In March, QC interacted with the operation of mobile health clinics in Somalia, especially in the southern provinces, which are still ongoing in the field. Medical convoys provide primary health services to the displaced and the poor, especially mothers and children under the age of five. So far, around 27,300 people have benefited from this project. At the end of last year, QC’s office in Somalia handed over medicines and medical supplies to the Mogadishu City Hospital as part of the emergency relief project for the victims of the bombing to minimise the serious impact of the accident. As Somalia was facing a worsening humanitarian situation at the beginning of 2017, due to the drought, which caused an increase in the number of displaced persons from 1.1mn to 2.1mn in a few months, QC launched a relief intervention for the displaced in the camps. The number of beneficiaries reached more than 27,975 persons in six provinces of Somalia through the operation of 15 medical convoys. Source: – Gulf Times
  10. Kenyan police on Sunday sought help from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) for the arrest of three suspected drug barons who are believed to have sneaked out of the country in June. Coast Regional Police Commander Noah Mwivanda said the trio suspected to be cocaine traffickers escaped from a neighboring country in mid June. Mwivanda told journalists in Mombasa that they have sought the assistance of Interpol to arrest and bring the three to Kenya for face the rule of law. “The three suspects have been classified. They may run today but will not escape forever. This is a business that we are committed to ending,” he warned. Mwivanda said the three are suspected to have sneaked into one of the neighboring countries. He added that the suspected drug barons, believed to be trading in cocaine, heroin and other hard drugs, hail from Mombasa. The East African nation has lately sustained a crackdown on drug trafficking activities since the January 2017 extradition of the notorious Akasha brothers — Baktash and Ibrahim — to the United States where they are facing charges alongside Vicky Goswami (Indian) and Hussein Gulam (Pakistani). Anti-narcotics police officers say most of the drug traffickers have also been avoiding airports for roads, which are poorly manned to traffic the drugs. Most of the narcotics that are seized are cocaine and heroin. Statistics show police at the airport seized drugs valued more than 10 million U.S. dollars every year alone. Most of those arrested were passengers who were on transit. President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed an immediate crackdown on drugs, dealers and their dens at the Coast. Surce:- Xinhua
  11. Ten Somali students were arrested inTurkey’s southern Mersin province over alleged links to the Fethullahist Terror Organisation (FETO), the group suspected to be behind the coup attempt in 2016, Garowe Online reported yesterday. The students were arrested alongside six others – three from Djibouti, two from Guinea and one from Syria – in a string of counter-terrorism raids executed by the Turkish authorities. Seven other suspects are still at large. The students were studying at Mersin University, but no other information is known about them. Some 41 other suspects, including on-duty Turkish soldiers ,were arrested over the same alleged links to FETO. The arrests come as the Kirikkale Public Prosector’s Office issued an arrest warrant for the soldiers. The counter-terrorism operation took place across 13 provinces, including Bursa, Sirnak and Kayseri. Turkish authorities believe FETO’s leader Fetullah Gulen directed the defeated coup in July 2016, where 251 people were killed and some 2,200 were injured. The Turkish government led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses the group of attempting to infiltrate government institutions, including the police, military and judiciary to overthrow the state. Last week, Erdogan won more than half the votes in Turkey’s presidential election. Source: – MEMO
  12. The Ambassador of the breakaway Somaliland in Uganda, Hemse Abdul said it’s high time, that the international community recognised Somaliland as an independent state to allow them deal with their problems effectively. “We need to strongly unite for the welfare of our nation, peaceful coexistence and defence in a united voice as one wherever we are in the world,” Abdul said. He praised what he called a flourishing relationship with Uganda that has allowed them settle in peacefully. Majority of Somalis from Somaliland living in Uganda are students studying from different institutions. Others are businessmen who have lived in Uganda for a long time including others who were born here. Somaliland, which is located in the horn of Africa; celebrates two independence days in a year – one in May and the other in June. They gained their independence from the British protectorate of North Ireland on June 26 1960 but were later amalgamated with neighbouring Somalia. However after the fall of long-time dictator Said Barre that saw Somalia plunge into a long civil war in 1991 Somaliland broke away and declared independence on May 18. “Due to various political and social issues the fruits of the reunion didn’t turn out positively, people of Somaliland suffered systematic discrimination, injustice, characterised with massive killings. We couldn’t continue with the marriage,” Hamse said. He adds that the position to dissolve the reunion and regain their independence, 27 years ago has seen unprecedented levels of improvement in peace and stability, private sector development, human rights infrastructure development among others. The ultimate objective for the past 27 years of the sparsely populated nation of four million people has been getting international recognition and Hemsi says it will remain so until they acquire it. A bag containing some of the robot was lost at Frankfurt airport last week, which led to the cancellation of a press conference scheduled to take place on Friday at the Ethiopian National Museum in the capital, Addis Ababa. We don’t yet know what was discussed in today’s meeting, but we do know that Sophia isn’t pre-programmed with answers. Instead, she uses machine learning and responds by reading people’s expressions. Designed by Hong Kong firm Hanson Robotics, Sophia has been programmed to speak Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language. 14. Former pastoralist Ibrahim Ismail Ige, 39, lives in the Somaliland capital Hargeisa, and earns a living as a grave digger. It is a far cry from the life he used to lead, when he had a large herd of 60 camels and 200 goats in the rural areas. His whole family depended on livestock for a living. But the harsh drought that hit Somalia in 2016 turned his village, Dobo-bariyale, on the southern border with Ethiopia, into a desert. All the animals died and the family moved to Nasa-Hablood 1 IDP camp, east of Hargeisa, where they live now. “I never thought my income would be tied to the death of people,” Ibrahim told Radio Ergo. Ibrahim learnt all about grave digging in the early part of 2017. Now it takes him three days to complete a grave and he sells the space for $40. It is a decent amount to support his 12-member family. Still, Ibrahim is sad that he has not been able to continue the proud pastoralist tradition that he inherited along with his livestock from his father. “If I got my camels back I would not choose the city over the rural lifestyle. Keeping livestock is prestigious and a respectable man’s job. I would go back to the previous life any day, I was leading a very good life,” Ibrahim said. Drought has brought to huge numbers of Somali pastoralists unemployment, food scarcity, displacement, and the stress of getting accustomed to a new life in the urban areas. Many have had to accept that they can no longer build their lives around livestock. Abdi Haashi Keynaan, 65, a former pastoralist and father of 20 children from his four wives, owned 700 goats in Galgadud region of central Somalia. His entire herd was wiped out in the drought. Abdi’s family migrated to Adado town in 2016, and settled in Karama IDP camp. He started repairing shoes, earning $2-3 a day, which provided an important lifeline for his large family. They cook one meal to share together when they all come back home in the evening. Despite working every hour he can, Abdi cannot make enough from shoe repairs to support his family. Sixteen of his children are of school age but do not go to school as he cannot pay the fees. Abdi said he was able to provide enough for his children before and that he would love to go back to the rural lifestyle if he could get some more livestock. He enjoyed his life much better then. Across Somalia, from north to south, destitute former herders have been displaced from the rural areas and turned to new trades or casual jobs. Abdi Deero Muhumed, 58, is working as a watchman at Al-Shifa Hospital in Bardera, Gedo region. He earns $100 a month that takes care of his family living in Habaal-Cadey camp. He lost his 200 goats and 50 camels in Daar village, 30 km north of Bardera, after five years of drought. The odd jobs that pastoralists have picked up have been a relief for their families. But many are a burden to relatives, who have let them move in to share their homes. Abdisamad Mohamed Abdullahi, a professor of social sciences at the University of Hargeisa, sees the exodus of former herders to the urban areas as very damaging to the country’s economically important livestock sector. He said it is vital that governmental authorities take strong measures to mitigate against future droughts, by planning for alternative water supplies including constructing water catchments and wells. This would enable pastoralists to move their livestock during drought and preserve their herds. Radio Ergo
