^And you won't hear us demand from the SomaliLanders to call us by what Italians called their new found land in the dark continent . Somali, Somalian, SomaliLander, Arlu Al-Soomaal, shifta, etc are names "others" used to call us. If our brothers like to be called what the British called then new addition of their vast empire. Fine, will do just that out of respect. It is common courtesy to call people by what they like to be called. I advice my fellow nomads to respect our brothers. Make no mistake though the question of separation and the secession is a fair game to slice, dissect, and put on the SOL hot seat

Xarago, You have a point there. Will just do that and it will be all good. Alla xisaabta iyo dooda dhex mari doonta waqooyi vs. koonfur yaa dhexdhexaadin doona Wey hagaagi oo si un bey noqon doontaa. War jiraa cakaaro buu iman. True.

Nonge, I can see there are many people who believe in its legitimacy. Likewise, there are many other folks in the same historical Somaliland that don't give any credence to that claim. You gotta be able to see the both sides of the argument sxb. Now what did you call us anti-Somaliland! No. I prefer anti-secession label if you know what I mean the connotation of the anti-Somaliland infers is not something that I wanna deal with. Here in America the Republicans (Fox TV) deviced this brilliant label America haters, terrorist appeasers and so on. They don't like to put their cards on the table and engage in meaningful discussion so they shut the critics off by sensationalizing the topic. Don't do that sxb Sue, yeah you can say that again: wishful thinking. It applies both sides.

Aduunyo! War maxaa kuu baxay Ngone what a disappointment At least Sue sees a light at the end of the tunnel. Look guys what you don't take into account is there is PL (a new reality on the ground as well), there will be Somalia (Wish us luck ) that sees Hargeisa as part of its domain (whether that is right or wrong, it is something we have to reckon). There are also something called International order and so far it agrees with choatic and anarchic Somalia (imagine Somalia that has a stable government). On the other hand, you have a part of Somaliland the region (not a country yet mind you), the absolutists who are willing to die for the secession. You also have another part of Somaliland who don't want to secede...! Now you see the picture. Can you see another civil war where each side would seek help to win the war just like Congo? Is this a worthwhile war? I find it very funny that you now have engaged in this "futile" and "pointless" argument to wave that flag Redundancy is the name of this game Get ready for it

Is it because the "others" around that corner can't get their acts together? or is it beacuse once upon time there was Britain colony in midst of divided and exploited Somalia? Or is it the grievences and the sense of "victimhood" that drives this secession? Who wants to succeed? Where are the borders of Somaliland?

I wish I had legs more worthy to bear such a noble crown; it is a pity they are so slim and slight.†At that moment, a Hunter approached and sent an arrow whistling after him. Away bounded the Hart, and soon, by the aid of his nimble legs, was nearly out of sight of the Hunter; but not noticing where he was going, he passed under some trees with branches growing low down in which his antlers were caught, so that the Hunter had time to come up. “Alas! alas!†cried the Hart: 'WE OFTEN DESPISE WHAT IS MOST USEFUL TO US

Xoogsade, Sxb you making too many assumptions. For one you assuming that "knowing" the facts and getting "informed" about the events are equivalent to getting involved or taking part of the negative business that tribalist are engaged in. You are also understimating Xu's intelligence and her judgment since you are protecting her from knowing the real world events. Nevertheless, your point is well taken. It is true that Somali politics is not for everyone. It is also true that there are so many biased websites that spit distorted revisionist history and unless one is doubly vigilant one is likely to fall in their traps. This is pricesly why you should encourage her to embark a fact-finding mission and trust her intellect to form balanced view and unbiased judgment based on the facts once she reads about her home country. Why bother? She is not getting into the mess. She is merely trying to understand the root cause of all of this mayhem. Nothing wrong with that methinks

Sophist, Intellectuals! Who are they? From what I gather, anyone who has a degree or schooled in western institutions is qualified to wear the banner of “intellectualâ€. I have yet to see or hear Somali think-tank-like institutions with capacity to formulate crisp, clear, objective, and unbiased policies that can relate to the realities on the ground. I prefer the term “professionals†for that’s what you find in the Diaspora. One reason why the “professionals†in the Diaspora are ineffective might be that they don’t share collective interest that unites them and around in which they can organize. Another reason is the question of resources and the problems it presents to these folks. Most of these professionals are minding their own personal business making a living for themselves and their families. To sacrifice and dedicate one’s energy and talents for higher cause, one needs to have a support system. Without this support system (for instance think-tank institution that pays their fellow researchers), one is prone to all kinds of undue influences. Another reason is the reality of tribal allegiance that bedeviled the “professionals†themselves - that’s why they are unable to get organized under one banner. Lastly, most of these “professionals†are young amateurs whose sincerity, optimism, and idealism took them into never-land where they practice the art of self-denial! I honestly believe that the “negative†tribalism and the mindset and political culture it propagates are, in a nutshell, what is wrong with our political culture. We might not be nomads literally but we have nomadic attitudes. The attitude of the “winner takes allâ€, the mindset that government is “Maandeeq†to be milked by whoever wins the civil war, and so on is a political reality for the folks on the ground. We don’t have political parties with unique political, economic, or social platforms instead we have tribal communities prone to lineal segmentation whose political ambition knows no bound. As of today, we don’t have visionary leaders with capacity to anticipate and look around the corners. Unfortunately, we have shrewd, ambitious personalities who have appetite for wealth and power at the expense of their clansmen and the nation. These fellas know how to cut corners in Somali culture and how to exploit their tribes. This is what is there on the ground. One would think that these interested “professional†amateurs will at least understand that the situation on the ground dictates what approach best accomplishes their mission which is peaceful Somalia where the rule of law reigns supreme and where the system not the personalities is the locus of the political discourse. Instead, they are oblivious of the “negative†tribalism and the hold it has on the political discourse. In so doing, they either dismiss, curse, or deny this fact. Finally, this completely dismissive attitude reminds me Powell’s famous quote and I’m paraphrasing he put this “intellectual†business so eloquently this way: Intellectuals often possess more data than judgment. Elites can become so inbred that they produce hemophiliacs who bleed to death as soon as they are nicked by the real world. Nice thread btw...excuse the rambling!

Xu, I recommend you to read (with critical eye and skeptical mind) the book titled “Modern history of Somalia†written in early 60s and revised in late 80s by I. M. Lewis, the English Orientalist. I find this book informative. I must congratulate you in your effort to further your horizon. As they say, more you read (right stuff of course) more informed and knowledgeable you become. I would rather read the primary sources myself and be informed that way on the current events back home beyond its surface appearances instead of relying on innuendos, rumors, propaganda, revisionist history, etc. presented as facts. Informed folks tend to see the big picture. Xoogsade, You remind me the black folk who used to say, “don’t go in there†fearing that once the facts are laid out in objective manner, he will be in a position to make better judgment on the issue under discussion. I don’t see how “knowing†more about your own country is a bad thing. For one thing, knowing "things" is not how folks are corrupted. On the contrary, it is when you don’t have a clue on the history and past political trends of whatever country that you are interested in knowing more about, that you indeed form uninformed and distorted opinion.

Simply put, the challenges are many and few that comes to my mind are: 1. Language barrier: this barrier exacerbates ignorance. 2. Integration without losing Islamic identity: big challenge. 3. Ambivalent attitude: Many Somali folks view the west as a temporary shelter. This indecisiveness as to where to permanently settle, here in the west or back home in Somalia, presents a unique challenge.

Many thanks to Feynman and 2985 for posting... Here is another insightful article. ---------------------------- Principles of Success 8/22/2004 - Religious - Article Ref: IC0408-2424 Number of comments: 24 Opinion Summary: Agree:23 Disagree:0 Neutral:1 By: IslamiCity IslamiCity* - According to the Quran, Prophet Muhammad was the most excellent example for all of humanity. Even non-Muslim historians recognize him to be one of the most successful personalities in history. In 1946 Reverend R Bosworth-Smith in "Mohammed & Mohammedanism." wrote about the Prophet: "Head of the state as well as the Church, he was Caesar and Pope in one; but, he was pope without the pope's claims, and Caesar without the legions of Caesar, without a standing army, without a bodyguard, without a palace, without a fixed revenue. If ever any man had the right to say that he ruled by a right divine It was Mohammad, for he had all the power without instruments and without its support. He cared not for dressing of power. The simplicity of his private life was in keeping with his public life." In 1978 Michael Hart in his book " The 100 Most Influential Persons In History", selected Prophet Muhammad as the most influential person in history and had this to say about his choice: "My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the secular and religious level... It is this unparalleled combination of secular and religious influence which I feel entitles Muhammad to be considered the most influential single figure in human history." The Prophet's words and actions show us the way to achieve success, not just in this world but in the hereafter as well. In short, the Prophet of Islam was a positive thinker in the full sense of the word. All his activities were result-oriented. He refrained from all negative elements of behavior that are counter-productive to achievement such as hate, envy, arrogance, greed, etc. All the actions of the Prophet were solely based on a pure intention to please God. By studying the life of the Prophet we can identify some of the principles of success. The First Principle: Take the easier path. This principle is well explained in a saying of A'ishah. She said: Whenever the Prophet had to choose between two options, he always opted for the easier choice. (Bukhari) To choose the easiest option means that you should evaluate your options and choose the most feasible. One who begins from this starting point will surely reach his goal. The Second Principle: See advantage in disadvantage. In the early days of Makkah, there were many problems and difficulties. At that time, a guiding verse in the Quran was revealed. It said: With every hardship there is ease, with every hardship there is ease. (94:5-6). This means that if there are some problems, there are also opportunities at the same time. The way to success is to overcome the problems and avail the opportunities. The Third Principle: Change the place of action. This principle is derived from the Hijrah. The Hijrah was not just a migration from Makkah to Madinah, it was a journey to find a more suitable place to put Islam into action. Physical migration and perseverance is an important element in establishing Justice and Peace. This also planted the roots of intellectual migration from the subjugated minds to an awakened spirit. The Fourth Principle: Make a friend out of an enemy. The Prophet of Islam was repeatedly subjected to practices of antagonism by the unbelievers. At that time, the Qur'an enjoined upon him the return of good for evil. And then, as the Quran added: You will see your direst enemy has become your closest friend. (41:34) It means that a good deed in return of a bad deed has a conquering effect over your enemies. And the life of the Prophet is a historical proof of this principle. The greatest example of amnesty was shown by the Prophet after the blood-less conquest of Makkah. All enemies of Islam were granted pardon including Hinda, the wife of Abu Soofyaan who had disemboweled the martyred body of Hamza, the Prophet's uncle. In spite of her detestable mutilation of Hamza's body, the Prophet forgave her. The Fifth Principle: Education is central to success. After the battle of Badr, about 70 of the unbelievers were taken as prisoners of war. They were educated people. The Prophet announced that if any one of them would teach ten Muslim children how to read and write he would be freed. This was the first school in the history of Islam in which all of the students were Muslims, and all of the teachers were from the enemy rank. The Sixth Principle: Don't be a dichotomous thinker. In the famous battle of Mutah, Khalid Ibn Walid decided to withdraw Muslim forces from the battlefield because he discovered that they were disproportionately outnumbered by the enemy. When they reached Madinah, some of the Muslims received them by the word 'O deserters!' The Prophet said: 'No, they are men of advancement'. Those Madinan people were thinking dichotomously, either fighting or retreating. The Prophet said that there is also a third option, and that is to avoid war and find time to strengthen yourself. Now history tells us that the Muslims, after three years of preparation, advanced again towards the Roman border and this time they won a resounding victory. The Seventh Principle: Do not engage in unnecessary confrontation. This principle is derived from the treaty of Hudaybiyyah. At that time, the unbelievers were determined to engage Muslims in fighting, because they were in an advantageous position. But the Prophet , by accepting their conditions unilaterally, entered into a pact. It was a ten-year peace treaty. Until then, the meeting ground between Muslims and non-Muslims had been on the battlefield. Now the area of conflict became that of ideological debate. Within two years, Islam emerged as victorious because of the simple reason of its ideological superiority. The Eighth Principle: Gradualism instead of radicalism. This principle is well-established by a Hadith quoted in Bukhari. A'ishah says that the first verses of the Qur'an were related mostly to Heaven and Hell. After some time when faith had taken hold in peoples hearts, God revealed specific commands to desist from unjust and self-deprecating social practices that were prevalent in the Arabian dark ages. This is a clear proof that for social changes, Islam advocates the evolutionary method, rather than the revolutionary method. The Ninth Principle: Be pragmatic in controversial matters. During the writing of the Hudaybiyyah treaty, the Prophet dictated these words: 'This is from Muhammad, the Messenger of God.' The Qurayshan delegate raised objections over these words. The Prophet promptly ordered the words to be changed to 'Muhammad, son of Abdullah'. This simple change placated the Qurayshan delegate. These are just some of the principles by which the Prophet of Islam conducted his life. His achievements have been recognized by historians as the supreme success. We would be wise to live by following his example. You have indeed in the Messenger of God a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in God and the Final Day .. (Quran 33:21) Adapted from the "Principles of Success in the Light of Sirah" by Wahiduddin Khan - Renaissance Islamic Journal

They are not from Kismayo or Lower Juba for that matter. Col. Barre Hiiraale has never been Kismayo before the civil war. Now at this stage, it will be foolish to start another civil war. Since Morgan is in attack posture and Puntland and Ethiopia are the potential suppliers of logitics he would need to win the war, I understand why you point finger at them. Fair enough! What I don't understand is anyone who supports Col. Barre Hiiraale and his coalition militia (inter-clan alliances) that vowed to control the region. FYI Col.
