Professor Samatar, Koonfurians are nationalists only when their clan is leading

Recommended Posts

metta

The only real Somali nationalists are HAG.

HAG doesn't care who is in power. HAG was tolerant of a dictatorship for another clan for over 2 decades. It was HAG who kept Siad Barre in power through their support. HAG will still sing Somaliyeey Tooso if are denied any form political power for 100 years.

Some koonfuur may be nationalists only when their clan is leading but not HAG. Have you ever seen HAG betray their nation when their clan was in the worst of times? Never ever.

Even the worst of HAG like warlords are still diehard nationalists.

Oodweyne maybe the professor was a bit naive thinking those who wave the blue flag when ever they get the chance, actually care for the country. And maybe the professor was to busy teaching the arts of political economy at universities. But every day that passes is a day closer for the professor to the realities on the ground. And the longer he spends in Mogadishu the better he understands the political tribal culture of the Koonfurians under the disguise of Somali nationalism.Waa La Doogiye Yaan La Dacaroon.

You guys give him too much credit. He seems like a 'blow-hard' who allowed the less than a dozen audience he used to receive at his lecture events across the Western diaspora(usually invited by some hapless Somali student group at various universities) get to his head. His gargantuan ego and the political 'blindness' it carries comes through at every Youtube clip his promoters post online.

Oodka,

As for him attending a Cafe Calaacal session, that's out of the question. Hopefully you'll get a chance to observe one of the N. American Cafe Calaacal franchises. It's a sight to behold. But in order to be given membership/seating, you must be idealogically associated with a certain 'long-demised' military regime, pining for the good, old days while passing around old Polaroid photos of your property and LandCruisers from those days. Given that criteria, our good Professor would not be welcome at that 'busy' franchise ;)

Hence if I were the membership committee of these "Café Calaacal" I would mind to consider him as a "honorary member" since his "tokenism" could give us some sort of a PR gloss along line of others not be in a position to accused of us a clannish outfit (if you get my drift)..
:D
:D

LOOOL.... ;) ;)

Oodka, bro,

You really must see these bustling 'franchises' across the major Somali population centers of the U.S.

Samatar's membership would never work; he would be thrown out with hot tea masala spilled on his face within 15 minutes ;) You see the good Professor only enjoys the sound of his own voice & would engage in long monologues backed up by different papers he's written in obscure journals. This would get in the way of the rotating 'Polaroids' and the nostalgia discussions interlaced with the hopes of 'We're so close to setting up shop again in Xamar Caddey!". Within a short time frame, the Professor would be booted out for interrupting the 'fluency' of the 'sheekada macaan ee inoo socota' ;)

Oodweyne,

Like I said you have no idea what you're missing. An award-winning Phd Psychiatric Thesis could be written on the phenomena of the 'Cafe Calaacal' franchises.

It's a very well organized franchise business. Every few months, an 'outsider' is invited to the session (usually an outsider who's a recent returnee from 'wadankii'). He's given free tea and cupcakes paid for by the membership and then eagerly told "Bal noo waran!". He proceeds to recite his observations while back in Somalia. As soon as his storyline diverts from the fantasy of the 'glorious return' back to 'Xamar Caddey', he's promptly grabbed by the collar of the shirt and unceremoniously ejected to the waiting 'parking lot' right outside.

It, truly, is a sight to behold ;)
