Greater Somalia

Will the greater somalia dream ever be realized? Will the 5 pointed star actually represent its original intents? Will the NFD ever raise the blue flag? Will galbeed leave its suitors? Will Djibouti ever join Somalia? Please discuss in respect to certain regions of its likelihood so we can have a holistic discussion.

It is a good question, but the better question was, has Somalia ever been a one country? ....No it wasn't and therefore will never be a one country. Therefore, out of the five (the star represent) Somali regions, there was only two that re-united in 1960s, the other 3 were always outsiders. The two (south and north) had now separated. Now, the re-union of these two are questionable despite the greater somalia.

For a brief period when Italy was defeated, all the Somali Lands except Jabuuti were one...then the treacherous Brits started giving bits and pieces "back", starting with the Haud and the Reserve Area to Ethiopia and NFD to Kenya...

 

Besides, before the colonial borders people moved as they pleased and respecting the Xeer...even now transhumance across the borders is common among those who still practice pastoralism like our forefathers.

It can happen 3 parts are already independent 2, to go but the problem the 3 independent states can hardly be united, thats the big issue and i am sure if the O'gaden gets independence they do not wish to be ruled from Mogadishu. I think the Kenyan Somalis , really like Kenya and do not wish to leave Kenya.

Qansax ever since the shifta war the Somalis there gave up the war, and are happy kenyans or else they would have fought the Kenyans

Greater Somali republic was an idea the SNL SYL came up with in the 1940s, but it never existed before that and it died quickly when the civil war began. Somaliweyn political ideology was conceived on emotions and because of colonialism, but when the colonialist left every one went back to his own roots.

Somaliweyn ideology can work if somalis stop seeing everything through a clan perspective however the only time that can happen is if the different entities face a huge threat.

The blue flag was designed and used to reflect and pursue an ideology. At present the Somali people neither believe in that ideology nor are willing to pursue it. So it is no longer fit for purpose and should be ditched by Somalia which is only one part of the five-sided star.

Also another reason why Somaliweyn never materialized was because,for us the state is an alien creature that usually stands in our way to achieve things, but sometimes allows our clan to benefit over others.For others it is what brings meaning to their lives, it is their very existence and they cannot imagine life or function as a society with out it. Somalis never really needed such a form of governance ,even during colonialism of Italy and France and Britain all 3 had their different methods on how they governed their colonies. All 3 imposed their own political culture on the societies , so at the time of independence what we he had was Somali Ethno Nationalism and not in the form of a shared historic colonialist past like much of Africa and that was the biggest dilemma our grandfathers in the 40s had to overcome. And the only weapon they had was Somalism, something that never existed before the white Europeans stepped into the Somali peninsula. There was a never a common past all Somalis shared but the Somali politicians the SYL and SNL were convinced they could create a new form of Ethnic Somali identity mixed with Somali statehood and the wider mega Somali republic objective. So in order to unite the Somalis the goal was set to unite the 5 Somali territories under one country. And it went well up to the year 1977 Somalis were tight and sh1t and would assist each other helped with the decolonization of Djibouti even though the unity wasn't materialized after we lost the war in 1977 Somali galbeed. i think that was the turning point for most Somalis.

I doubt it when Mogadishu was being invaded by Ethiopia no one was promoting Somaliweyn , other Somalis might feel sorry or demonstrate but a common threat will not unite Somalis.

saaxiib that was against a certain clan what i mean is a common enemy who doesn't differentiate whether you are from Boosaso,Baydhabo,Banaadir or Berbera.
