Khatumo State Marks Its 1st Anniversary

 

 

 

The 1st anniversary of Khatumo State of Somalia has been celebrated today in several parts of the semi-autonomous State and abroad.

 

Celebrations were held in Taleh, the birthplace of Khatumo, and several other towns in the region including Buhodle, Bo’ame and Awr-Bogays. Similar events were also held in abroad.

 

In Taleh, the current regional president Ahmed Elimi Osman led the regional administration in marking its first anniversary, a significant day in the history of the Sool, Sanaag and Ayn region of northern Somalia.

 

Khatumo was formed 12 January 2012 after leaders of the northern regions of Sool, Sanaag and Ayn decided to band together into a new state and declared they wanted to be an independent region within Somalia.

 

The regional administration has a unique system of governance where a president serves only six months, with three presidents having governed the area for the last one year.

 

Since its formation, Khatumo has been at loggerheads with secessionist Somaliland forces sometime engaging in deadly confrontations.

 

Somaliland which has unilaterally declared its independence from the rest of Somalia after the fall of Somalia’s central government is facing resistance from a local clan which formed the Khatumo state.

 

Fighting between Somaliland forces and Khaatumo fighters flared up in January and February last year near the border town of Buhoodle, after a week-long stalemate, forcing thousands to flee.

Alhamdulilaah Khaatumo State is doing great, and I agree with you the Somali Federal Government has let down all regions of Somalia including Khaatumo State.

But if they support anti SL rebels that would mean they are jeprodizing the future talks with Somaliland and thats something the folks in xamar dont want to risk. Imagine if the talks fail than the IC needs to facilitate new talks and it will take lots of time again and the new govt in xamar will have another foe in the region Somaliland. Raising ur concern will not help khatumo so why do that and than further push away the SL govt.

+ 1 - well put. All the federal government is supposed to do is to be fair to all; that is all otherwise it is digging its own grave.

XX: saaxiib I notated that your kin folks are more sacred than the rest of Somalis and their agitation is a political gaffe if not a sin . I hope president Hassan doesn't take your advice of alienating Awdal, Makhir & Khatumo communities for the sake of SL's appeasement. If our president is smart he better treat SL an entity that represents only what it represents not as it portrays itself. I hope the leadership of your enclave reads that tsunami changes that are taking place in its surroundings and thereafter factors out its future political maneuvers.

Taleexi awoow its not going to work like that but if hassan culusow represents you in the upcoming talks you should be on his side when talking to Siilaanyo , xaglatoosiye made his choice now the choice is you'res. Hassan sheikh maxamuud will do the talking for Somalia and he said it clearly that he is talking to Somaliland and Somaliland the state that united with Somalia on first of July 1960. He clearly stated that 52 years ago the former Somali republic was conceived with a Somaliland state and a Somalia state. And now we need re negotiate the union those were the words of the president and we welcome that.

I dont think the government in Mogadishu can do a better job than Puntland when fighting for those regions. Mogadishu has to appease the semi autonomous state of Puntland which lays some claims of eastern sool and eastern sanaag. So by supporting them he would also anger Mr faroole. But right now Somaliland controls the vast majority of those regions there is no way Hassan sheikh will waste his resources with that he must secure the lower shabelle and parts of bay and bakool and the middle juba region.
