Sudan declares war on South, vows to overthrow its government

Special to WorldTribune.com

CAIRO — Sudan, conducting daily air strikes, has widened its war

against its southern neighbor.

Officials from both countries reported an expansion of the war by the

Khartoum regime against South Sudan. They said the Sudanese Army has sent

thousands of troops to recapture the disputed oil-rich town of Heglig.

“This is war,” Sudanese government spokesman Rabie Abdul Ati said. “Our forces want to teach them a lesson.”

Officials said the Sudanese Air Force has also conducted daily strikes

on targets in South Sudan. In one operation, a United Nations refugee camp was bombed.

“Our people are angry,” Abdul Ati said on April 16. “This is not a time

for diplomacy. This is a time for pushing them and letting them know that they are irresponsible.”

On April 16, Sudan’s parliament branded South Sudan an enemy and vowed to overthrow its government, led by the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement. The parliamentary resolution, supported by the regime of President Omar Bashir, called on the military and government to fight Juba.

“We announce that we will clash with SPLM until we end its government in

South Sudan,” Sudanese parliamentary speaker Ahmed El Tahir said.

Officials said the Sudanese Army has recaptured positions held by rebels

aligned with South Sudan. They cited Mugum, located in the Blue Nile state

near the border with South Sudan, in which 25 rebels were killed by the

Sudanese Army’s Fourth Division on April 15.

“There has been continued bombardment by Sudan Armed Forces,” Southern

Army spokesman Col. Philip Aguer said. “Our forces are now on maximum

alert.”

Fighting was also reported in South Sudan’s Unity State as well as

Western Bahr El Ghazal in which at least 19 South Sudanese soldiers were

killed. In many cases, the Sudanese Air Force employed its

Russian-origin An-24 air transport for bombing missions. In March, a

Sudanese MiG-29 fighter-jet was downed by South Sudan’s new air defense

systems.

“We have never been their enemy,” South Sudan Information Minister

Barnaba Marial Benjamin said. “Our position is that we don’t consider them

as our enemy.”

KHARTOUM - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Wednesday declared war on South Sudan, and vowed to bring down the government of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement () in Juba, at a time of escalating military confrontations on the border between the two countries.

Addressing a rally of members of the ruling National Congress Party in Khartoum, the Sudanese president announced "from today our slogan is to liberate the citizens of South Sudan from the rule of the SPLM, and from today it will be eye for eye, tooth for tooth and strike for strike and the beginner (of the war) is more unjust".

"We've made a mistake historically to enable the SPLM to rule the south, but we will correct this mistake, and we have a moral obligation for our people in South Sudan, that is to save them from the SPLM," al-Bashir added.

Al-Bashir accused the government of South Sudan of failing to commit itself to the agreements and treaties the two countries had signed, saying "these people do not keep promises and not adhere to the documents, and they are traitors."

He continued saying "Sudan should not be ruled separately in the north and the south, either they (SPLM) come and control Khartoum or we go and control Juba."

The remarks came as fresh clashes reportedly erupted near the town of Aweil, South Sudan, about 160 km west of the Heglig oil field near the border between the two countries, which have been seized by the South Sudanese army since April 10.

The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday reiterated its call for Sudan to stop air strikes and South Sudan to withdraw from Heglig.

"Council members discussed ways to leverage the influence of the council to press the parties to take these steps, and included in that a discussion potentially of sanctions," U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told reporters following a council meeting.

The oil-rich Heglig region on the north side of the 1956 border between Sudan and South Sudan, has been captured by the South Sudanese army since Tuesday.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit said last month that Heglig belonged to his country, but both Khartoum and the African Union denied the claim.

The pan-African body, along with the United Nations, called for an unconditional withdrawal of the South Sudanese troops from Heglig.

The Sudanese parliament decided last Wednesday to announce a general mobilization and stop negotiations with South Sudan.

Sudan parliament declares war against South Sudan

Local News

Bakhita Radio, 18 April 2012

Sudan’s parliament resolution to designate South Sudan an enemy state amounts to a declaration of war.

South Sudan Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press this morning that yesterday’s resolution by the Sudanese parliament is the formalization of a war Sudan is waging against South Sudan.

Dr Marial said the extremist wing of Sudan’s ruling party dragged the parliament to take what he named a crazy decision.

He added that South Sudan considers the people of Sudan its brothers and sisters.

Dr Marial said that the Republic of Sudan confirms itself as the aggressor through the declaration of war.

He added that South Sudan will defend its territorial integrity but it will not occupy an inch of Sudan’s territory.

Bashir Seeks to 'Liberate' South Sudan

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir speaks at the National Congress Party headquarters in Khartoum, April 18, 2012. Addressing a youth rally, Bashir threatened to overthrow the government of South Sudan.

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has vowed to remove South Sudan's ruling party from power, as tension between the countries continues to escalate.

Addressing a rally in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, Wednesday, Bashir said Sudan's "main goal" is to, in his words, liberate South Sudan's people from the ruling SPLM party.

He spoke after Sudanese and South Sudanese forces battled overnight near the town of Meiram, located in Sudan's Southern Kordofan state.

The sides have fought a series of clashes along their border, raising fears of a full-scale war. Sudan is demanding southern forces leave the town of Heglig, which they occupied last week. The south has condemned Sudan for a series of airstrikes.

The countries have been unable to resolve disputes over borders, oil, and citizenship stemming from the south's independence last July.

Speaking in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa Wednesday, an adviser to Bashir, Mustafa Osman, said Sudan wants to settle the issues through negotiations but is facing demands for action from the public.

He said the army is ready to recapture Heglig, which produces about half of Sudan's oil.

After discussing the Sudan crisis on Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council said it will make "every effort" to get sides to end the conflict and return to negotiations.
