Click Here to read more: "Somaliland Battles against Three Deadly Wars—Clan, Jihad, & Pan-Somalism"

While the International community revives Somalia, an ominous storm gathers at Somaliland´s borders. The storm gains momentum, and so does the invasive war with ghastly stories to tell. And unlike Somalia´s “Transitional Federal Government” (TFG) that fights against only Jihadists, Somaliland faces three violent groups with conflicting ideologies but with one common goal: achieving Somali unity—at any cost. That is, Somaliland now battles against clan militias, Jihadists, and pan-Somalism rebels.

Now more than ever before, clan militias, Jihadist suicide bombers, and pan-Somalism rebels vow to inflict a major blow to Somaliland guarded peace and democracy. With their conflicting ideologies, despite these three militants, Puntland, and TFG all squabbling and maintaining a chronic instability in Somalia, there is one thing that unites them: that is, coercing Somaliland to reunify with Somalia—at any cost. So, the idea of disintegrating Somaliland into clan enclaves, launching pan-Somalism struggle, and conducting a holy war against Somaliland is no longer a perceived threat, but it is a coordinated strategy unfolding before our eyes.

Therefore, IGAD, U.N., U.S. and U.E. aught to avert catastrophic clan, Jihad, and pan-Somalism wars brewing near Somaliland borders. Failure to persuade Puntland that clan ambition is, indisputably, the root cause of Somalia´s turmoil, could compel Somaliland to snap and react, swiftly and devastatingly, after two decades of hoping that peace will prevail one day. Also, the war could spillover into Puntland´s territory, for the first time.

 Why would Waraabe have a view on this??

I dont see the big deal; the guy did not force anyone to watch or do anything they didnt want to do; the women were traders (yes sex is the oldest trade known to man) the industry exists before the white man got there. The women are NOT kids and everyone involved was happy. How is this shame against Somali women or Somali women abused?? It is a private issue right up until they started streaming it live.

I do think that if the state wasted so much time putting him on trail and wasting the judges time, then it is ****** to let him out, laakin I dont think it is important enough for it to warrant a response for hebel, hebel and the other. Wh*ores always existed and always will do, I wouldn't waste my time or energy on getting pis*sed off on their behalf, nor are they my sisters.

It would be a different issue if it was forced or kids, but consenting adults ya bada socda.

^^^That’s all great, but this man was convicted of a crime, pornography and prostitution is a crime I believe in Somalia and NW Somalia is no different.

He was sentenced to 4 years jail time and $10,000 fine, and yet he got away scot free.

Now this is a big deal, and there are young girls involved and if it was not a big deal why did the court find him guilty of a crime and sentence him?

Prostitution is illegal in all Muslim lands, because it’s the oldest profession does not make it alright.

GD I am not sure about this (maybe JB can clarify) but I dont think Prostitution is illegal, not in Somalia or Somaliland. In fact if I am right he was only prosecuted FOR distrubting porn and pornography.

Prostitution is and always will be something that exist but ignored by the Somalis (in all areas) but I think the locals had a problem with pornography that was circulating hence the case.

Prostitution is NOT alright (Islamicly at least) but so long as it is between consenting private inviduals it has not nothing to do with the state)

As I said it is waste of money to prosecute him and put him on trial if the stentence is not served, never the less it does not merit a speech from anyone- least of all in defence of women who went into that proffession. Iyaga aya dhortey and consented to being film and everything else, they didnt even put forward a defense or claim they were forced so why are we quick to paint them as victims? They got paid like him and they were pretty happy till they got busted. uuf caalkey allow trying to speak or defend waxas oo kaley.

Hargeisa: a capital in search of a country

Posted by Mohamed H. Osman on May 13, 2010 at 7:00pm

For a people without an official nation, Somalilanders sure love their flag.

It's everywhere--painted on doors, flying from government buildings and private homes, hanging from rear view mirrors, worn on belt buckles and even knitted into a cap. Somalilanders are proud of their nation and want everyone to know it.

After sleeping off a grueling ten-hour bus ride to get to the capital Hargeisa, I wake up and see at least a dozen flags from my hotel window. I'm eager to start exploring. I don't know what to expect. Somalilanders say the capital is safe, but can an unrecognized government next to one of the world's worst war zones really keep the peace?

My contact in Harar, Muhammed Dake, had assured me, "Hargeisa is safe. Just watch out for two things. Foreigners are offered prostitutes and alcohol. Both are
illegal
."

Prostitution is illegal in Somalia adeer, you can check with whoever you want. Also the man got away with a heinous crime because he was GERMAN. Because he was European, his safety, his welfare and his comfort was above that of the women he used and abused.

Thus what are the courts for if their judgment does not matter?

GD, Again I agree about wasting the courts time, laaking I disagree that these women need any defending, nor do I see a reason why it is required that people (particularly ones who did not make the decision) are somehow required to speak on behalf of prostitutes.

He did not get off because he was German, my best bet would be he got off for sinister reasons- nevertheless I dont see why it requires a speech. If it were rape or torture or forced or kids I would agree, but there is no reason for the common somali in HAregisa of anywhere else should care about 5 prostitutes and their pimp.

Anyway, I just noticed 6 threads about this same thing, I note that rather than people defending prostitutes they are seeing it as a bashing opportunity, so I wont spoile your fun, go ahead and carry on defending your sisters.

Its your opinion that the women of the poorest country in the world do not need defending from nefarious men from the richest countries in the world.

Yes the White German man, who has resided in Hargaysa since 1993 and has been developing Porn movies with Somali girls, some paid, some bribed and distributed throughout the city of Hragaysa and online is not a big problem?

The court handed down a conviction and this was turned down and the man is now scot free with his ill gotten gains.

Also what if this man was Somali and lets say from Mogadishu and his name was Jama Islow, and he got away with it and walked scot free, what would be the reaction.

Warrabe would have had some choice words for Siilanyu and his “weak” government.

Ibtisam, prostitution is illegal in Somaliland according to Somalia’s 1962 penal code. “On reassertion of its independence in 1991, the Republic of Somaliland decided to continue applying the same Penal Code.

PENAL CODE

LEGISLATIVE DECREE NO. 5 (1962)

Crimes against morals and decency.

Article 405 (prostitution) - 1. Whoever practices prostitution in any form shall be punished with imprisonment from two months to two years and with a fine. 2. Where the act is committed by a married person, the punishment shall be increased.

The initial 4 year sentence which was slightly higher than what article 405 of the Penal Code states, was most likely driven by other factors such as mass distribution, public outrage and harming the state’s image. Whether the man served time based on our prevailing law (2 months to two years) or the possibility his imprisonment may harm Somaliland’s quest for recognition, could have been the motivating factor for Siilaanyo’s decision to pardon this pornographer. Acknowledging Siilaanyo’s pardon made a mockery of Somaliland’s justice system, the fact still remains that our penal code doesn’t go far enough in stopping these crimes. Such high profile decision also provides much needed ammunition for the Islamist to continue their quest for a constitutional overhaul.
