Somaliland Warns Foreigners against Taking part in Voter Registration

Recommended Posts

Hargeisa (Observer): On 16 October, The Minister of Interior of Somaliland, Abdillahi Ismail Irro, issued a strong directive warning non-Somalilanders against trying to obtain voter registration and nationality cards during the electronic registration exercise that has started in Somaliland on 14 October.

The directive also warned Somaliland citizens against helping illegal aliens to obtain these cards. The directive specified that those who are caught trying to obtain these cards illegally or those citizens caught helping them could face long imprisonment.

Registration started in the coastal Sahil region. There have been reports that some people who are not Somaliland citizens have been trying to register and in some cases where being assisted by Somaliland citizens hoping to register loyal voters for the upcoming presidential elections. There are large communities of Ethiopian, especially Oromo Ethiopians in Somaliland. There are also large numbers of Somalis who fled war-torn Somalia. The Somaliland government considers these Somalis refugees and according to the citizenship Law they are ineligible for Somaliland citizenship.

2. Any female (Somaliland) citizen who marries a male alien shall lose her citizenship if she accepts[39] her husband’s citizenship.

3. A female citizen, who is married to a husband who has renounced his Somaliland citizenship and acquired another citizenship, shall lose[40] her (Somaliland) citizenship unless the husband was a refugee.

Ouch! OUCH! :D

Your words reminded me of a prominent Somali nationalist,Mr Michail Mariano whom once said to the British 'The Somali people are one and the same yet you are trying to divide two brothers with these lines, I assure you that nothing will stop them coming together'

Ah! What happen to the much bigged up democracy?
