Somali rebel leader to fight on against Ethiopia

Sheikh Ahmed says with passage of time more Somalis to join resistance against Ethiopian troops in Somalia.

ASMARA - A top Somalian opposition leader on Thursday vowed to fight until the withdrawal of all Ethiopian troops, ruling out peace talks with the transitional government.

"It is our belief that every individual in Somalia has to participate in the resistance and the defeat of the Ethiopian occupation," Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said in the Eritrean capital.

"The more time goes by, the more Ethiopia will be resisted by the people, and they will be disliked by the international community because they are not carrying out what they said they will do," he said.

"They will become more isolated and have more failure in Somalia," he said.

Sheikh Sharif is chairman of the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia (ARS), an Islamist-dominated opposition coalition formed in September.

He was a top leader of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), which controlled large parts of Somalia before being ousted by temporary government forces and Ethiopian troops earlier this year.

The armed branch of the ICU and their tribal allies have since waged a guerrilla-style war in Mogadishu, targeting Somali and Ethiopian troops.

The violence that erupted since the temporary government forces took control of the country has crippled Somalia's ailing economy, left hundreds dead and forced tens of thousands to flee Mogadishu, fueling popular resentment against the Ethiopian presence.

Sheikh Sharif ruled out talks with either Ethiopia or Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed.

"As long as the Ethiopian action in Somalia is to kill Somalis and make more atrocities, then there is nothing to talk about with Ethiopia," he said.

"As far as the Abdullahi Yusuf clique is concerned, they have no authority they are only a puppet of the Ethiopians, and as long as that situation prevails there is no question of negotiation with them."

The man spent 2O days in the dense Somali bush ridden with mosquitos and wild animals. Didn't he leave reer Muqdisho to make their own decision as to what they would with the Ethiopians?

20 days - How long it took for him to negotiate for his life begging the Americans to save him while the poor teenagers were dying on his orders. Isn't time to face the reality? Why doesn't he let the poor somali women and children to negotiate for their lives as he did? I bet they would love to sit and eat the meals with him too.

How do you know he begged, where you there? The man was called by the Kenyans and Americans with negotiation from I.C.U leaders. Secondly, firmly rejected Americans proposals to denounce the struggle. Even when he was in their hotel, he was calling Aljazeera urging Somalis to defend themselves. In any case, the young Youths of Somalia are fighting because they have been killed and driven from their homes. Nobody is dying fo Sheikh Shariff, he is but one man?! They have a right to defend themselves. If there is negotiation, then let the Ethiopians make a date for their withdrawl and then the I.C.U will negotiate with the T.F.G on a settlement. Otherwise it is not fair that people are labeled as terrorists, driven from their homes, tortured, imprisoned and bombarded with gas, then expect to sit down and drink tea with the Ethiopians!

He called Al-jazeera while using an American cell phone. Why would they let him do that. Isn't in the American interest that this so called insurgents keep fighting so they can continue their so called war on terror? What makes you think he is not working for them? Put aside loyalties and start asking questions.

Is it gossip time now?

I have no loyalties as such, I simply support Somalis to defend themselves against invasion and occupation!

There was a time when he sounded sincere if a little naive. Now though, he's either a half-wit or a shameless opportunist. :(
