Kenya reimposes Wajir stopover for all flights leaving Mogadishu

Recommended Posts

Mogadishu (HOL) - The government of Kenya has reimposed a mandatory security check in Wajir for all flights leaving the Somali capital, according to a Notices to the Airman (NOTAM) released today by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.

The NOTAM reads: "All flights from Mogadishu, Somalia must route via Wajir for security checks before proceeding to their final destinations".

This NOTAM will expire August 9, 2019, unless renewed by KCAA.

The directive comes despite criticism from airline operators flying between the two cities, who termed the checks as unnecessary.

The Wajir security stop over - introduced by then President Mwai Kibaki in 2006 - is conducted by Kenya Police and Kenya Airforce and involves passengers disembarking from the plane and going through immigration and customs while all luggage is removed and scanned.

Somalia and Kenya reached an agreement in March 2017 to resume direct flights between the two capitals after almost a decade of transiting through Wajir.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is a notice filed with an aviation authority to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a location that could affect the safety of the flight.

Currently, Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport offers nonstop flights to seven cities, including Istanbul, Turkey.

The Wajir Airport - which relied heavily on planes for Mogadishu for revenue - has told Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper that it was losing KSh2 million (USD$19,753) monthly after the direct flights between Mogadishu and Nairobi was reestablished.

Either this is some mafia or very strong parliamentarian/businessman for Wajir.

Is there any Somalilander connection?

Kenyans could have asked and obtained to have customs office in Mugadishu which is commonly done among friendly countries.

There is nothing friendly about Kenya. They want to humiliate the Somali government. It is a war, a political war.

Understand, but if you cannot do much about it, change the issue. Tell the Kenyans to check in Mugadishu and then flights are free to go straight. Kenya having customs office in Mugadishu does not cost Somalia anything in terms of sovereignty.  Many countries around the world have this kind of arrangement.

Well, if you see on the other side of the coin, it is the Kenyans who need those flights than us. Since invading Somalia in 2011, Kenya lost 80% of tourism in the country, but that business is replaced by the UN activities in Nairobi.

THey are the third largest UN offices after New York anf Geneva. Their flights stary early morning until dusk, they are the largest flights by volume in Mogadishu airport.

I would ban all flights coming from Kenya until they reverse their decisions  including KHat. It is dog eat dog world , no more diplomacy or or cooperation. Have you seen the man who is the leader of  the United States diplomatic chief in the world, Mr. Mike Pompeo. You do not need intelligence, shrewd diplomatic tactics or even negotiations. Threat and intimidation is the new diplomacy.

We don't send anything to them other than corrupt politicians seeking cash from the NGO's. Close their flights.

Somalia has too many issues and total lack of focus and identifying priorities.

Quarelling over money from IC

Quarelling over system of governance

Quarelling over friends be it Saudi/UAE or Turkey/Qatar

Quarelling how to govern Mugadishu

Quarelling who of the neighbors to get close to and who to avoid or less close

Too many fronts and no progress in any of them.

Forget Kenya for now and straighten the Capital and close by regions. Don't accept anyone who does not contribute to this.

If you make federalism priority to fight against, you start with a loss already.

Puntland for sure will never give up its autonomy. Unless you move the whole federal government to Puntland which is another impossible.

Farmaajo should have stated one agenda at a time. Period. The reason the meeting failed is too many agendas and that is recipe for failure.

You realized that Pompeo behaves this way:

1. America has no money to bribe dictators or "democrats" only force is what America has left

2. He has openly stated he is christian Zionist so he wants temple built, world war happen very fast

3. All allies are now looking both ways. No body is now dedicated and loudly singing from the song book. Before America used to send Britain, Australia, Poland, France...to speak what America wants now America has to speak by itself and do things by themselves. Tony Blare spoke about Iraq war more than George Bush. Those days are over.

This is great news. Farmajo and company can and will be searched and probed in Wajir.

I support this move by the friendly Kenyan Government.

Oh man, you want your own country humiliated by another one. This has nothing to do with Farmaajo, it is Somalia and Somalis that are humiliated.

No wonder Kenyans put Apophis and his ilk knowing they will serve well putting knife in the back of Somalia.

Walaahi Dalkani Gacan bir ah in lagu qabto ayuu u baahan yahay.

Exactly. Eritrea, Abiy and Arabs. to many fronts. The foreign policy is dysfunctional, they need a heavyweight minister. Farmaajo must bring back C/raxman Bayle as foreign minister. He  sued the Kikuyo few years back and forced the Kenyatta kid to land to Mogadishu.

Kenya is venerable.

Isn't this more expensive for Kenya itself? Why can't they do the same security check at Nairobi? Logistically and financially this move makes no sense.

You do know this does not affect both cargo aircraft and NGO/UN Air Service.

Bad idea and method.

If you punish him yourself its internal, but if you want him punished by foreigners then the competition changes. He will also go to find a more powerful foreigner and then you will go to finding more powerful foreigner than his.

As the world keeps changing this becomes endless. You can never settle and close any file or any issue.

Look what happened in Kililka. Most Somalis were in agreement that Illey needs to go at least retire. Believe it or not even Illey himself was convinced he had to go/retire from presidency.

But because this was done with foreigners/Oromo and the campaign was that the Oromo are saving Ethiopia from separatist Illey, no Somali is happy with the result. Even those in power now are always shamed that they came to power by Oromo. It is so obvious and open secret that they cannot hide. People exchange fake smiles and fake brotherhood.

Always choose to punish your own brother yourself otherwise compromise. Any victory you achive over your brother with help of foreigners is disunity for the longest time.
