  10. Aussie family sues KFC after daughter becomes ill Sydney: An Australian family sued KFC on Monday, claiming their daughter became brain damaged and crippled after eating a chicken wrap tainted with salmonella. Their lawyer told the New South Wales state Supreme Court in an opening statement there was no doubt that Monika Samaan, then 7, developed salmonella poisoning from a chicken wrap bought from a KFC outlet in Sydney in 2005. "There is little or no doubt that chicken was reported by all scientists, at the time of these unhappy events occurring, as being the source of that salmonella," lawyer Anthony Bartley said. Officials for KFC, which is operated by Louisville, Kentucky-based Yum Brands Inc., could not immediately be reached for comment. The girl, now 11, attended court in a wheelchair. Bartley said she had acquired spastic quadriplegia and an intellectual disability since the poisoning. Bartley said the court would hear "disturbing and quite unsettling" evidence about the practices in KFC kitchens during the trial.

  12. ADDIS ABABA, Aug 3 (Reuters) - An Ethiopian court jailed a Canadian for life on Monday after he was convicted of membership of a separatist rebel group fighting for independence for an ethnically Somali part of the country. Bashir Ahmed Makhtal, who was born in Ethiopia but had travelled to Canada as a refugee and became a Canadian citizen in 1994, was found guilty last week on three charges related to membership of the ****** National Liberation Front (ONLF). "The court has decided against the death penalty which is the maximum penalty for the charges," Judge Adem Ibrahim said at the Federal High Court in capital Addis Ababa. "The court sentences the defendant to life in prison." Bashir, who left Ethiopia aged 11 and does not speak the local Amharic language, did not react as the sentence was read. His lawyer, Gebreamlak Gebregiorgis, told Reuters he would appeal against both the conviction and sentence next week. Ethiopia denounces the ONLF -- which wants independence for the remote eastern ****** region -- as a terrorist group that it says is supported by long-time rival Eritrea. The ONLF accuses the Ethiopian military of routinely killing civilians and burning villages in ******, which borders Somalia. ****** is eyed by foreign oil and gas companies who think its huge deserts might be rich in mineral deposits. Analysts say the region's location between the border and Addis Ababa makes the Ethiopian government reluctant to give it up after a long history of hostilities with Somalia. Bashir -- whose grandfather was an ONLF founder -- was arrested in 2006 crossing into Kenya from Somalia after Ethiopian forces invaded Somalia to oust an Islamist movement that had taken control of the capital Mogadishu. The 40-year-old says he ran a second-hand clothing store in Kenya and often visited Mogadishu to buy clothes. He says he was fleeing the fighting after the invasion. Bashir's family says he was subsequently detained in secret in Ethiopia for more than two years and denied consular visits. Canadian officials have attended his trial hearings. Human rights groups have criticised the trial and say the prosecution failed to produce any credible witnesses. Bashir's supporters say he was arrested because of his family's ONLF links. They say he was never a member of the guerrilla group. The Ethiopian government denies his trial was unfair.

  14. Dubai: A few hours after a woman celebrated Valentine's Day with her boyfriend her body was found dumped in a manhole in Al Nahda. S.SH, a 31-year-old Indian waiter at Dubai International Airport, has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend following a dispute over Dh200 he had lent her. The Dubai Court of First Instance is looking into the case of S.SH, who is suspected of murdering H.H,. his Myanmarese girlfriend, after an evening together in Al Mamzar Park. "I gave her a gift while we were celebrating Valentine's Day at Mamzar Park and then I took her back home. Once we reached there we got into an argument and I demanded my money back but things went out of control and we started a fight," S.SH said, according to Public Prosecution records. S.SH reportedly pushed his girlfriend to the ground and strangled her. In order to hide his crime he dragged the body into a manhole in the same neighbourhood and dumped her there and closed it with a plastic cover. But while he was dumping her in the hole her jeans stayed in his hands. He found Dh300 in its pocket, which he took, the prosecution said. However, in the first court hearing yesterday, S.SH revoked his confession and pleaded not guilty in front of the judge. The court session was postponed to August 30 to appoint a lawyer for the suspect. The body of H.H. was found on the morning of February 22 by a construction worker and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) immediately cordoned off the area. The worker who found the body had earlier told Gulf News: "I first saw her legs pointing outwards and her head trapped inside. It was horrific and I just can't believe what I saw." The CID detained S.SH after investigations revealed that he was the last person to be seen with the victim. S.SH and H.H met through work as they both worked as serving staff in a restaurant at the airport. In an earlier interview with Gulf News, a roommate of H.H. had described her as "a beautiful, young, petite woman who was kind, loving and friendly - especially to her Myanmarese roommates". According to the roommate, she and H.H. had come to Dubai together in September 2008.
