  7. Just days after he was killed, a Minneapolis businessman was buried in his homeland of Somalia. In Minnesota, he’d been the owner of several clothing stores.
  8. MINNEAPOLIS - Family members confirmed with FOX 9 that a Minnesota businessman was murdered in his homeland of Somalia. Bashir Abdi left for Somalia two weeks ago to help the country establish a new government, but his noble efforts may have cost him his life. Abdi was a lawyer in Somalia, and left for Mogadishu to help the new prime minister set up a provisional government. He was apparently killed Tuesday morning, just a few blocks from the presidential palace. In Minnesota, he'd been the owner of several clothing stores at a Somali mall near 24th and Chicago Avenue, where news of his assassination spread quickly. Friends told FOX 9 Abdi was very concerned about his safety going back to Somalia, but was intrigued by the idea he could make a difference. The new prime minister in Somalia is Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, an American Somali from Buffalo, New York. Somalia hasn't had a real government in 20 years. Violence in Mogadishu from the Al Qaeda-linked group, Al-Shabab is an everyday occurrence. More than 2,000 civilians were killed in Mogadishu this year alone, most by indiscriminate shelling. A few blocks around the presidential palace considered the only safe zone. The political context may also be important. In the last 48 hours, the prime minister's been trying to shrink the cabinet from 39 to 18 ministers. But many of the clans believe they're being excluded. One militia commander even left the cabinet Tuesday, which further shrank the security zone around the presidential palace. Many of those clans are concerned about American influence in politics in Somalia, and some feared Abdi could have been seen as part of that American influence.
  9. African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia has arrested six of its soldiers after two civilians were killed in indiscriminate gunshot in Mogadishu. The incident occurred Tuesday as convoy of heavily armed peacekeepers opened fire on civilians at a road between the international airport and the strategic Km 4 Area in South Mogadishu. SOMALIA- AU peacekeepers in somalia starts geting allowances Nearly 10 civilians among them children were also wounded in the accident. The commander of the peacekeepers serving the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom), Major General Nathan Mugisha, has apologized. Maj. Gen. Mugisha termed the incident unfortunate and shared with the Somali people their grief. He said that one of the wounded was being treated at an Amisom medical facility, adding that the peacekeepers were ready to medically assist the other injured (that are being treated at Madina Hospital in Mogadishu) if required. “We are not certain whether the soldiers were responding to a perceived threat,” the African Union force commander, Maj. Gen. Mugisha, said in a statement. “However, all the soldiers involved have been arrested and taken into a military custody while a full inquiry is launched into the precise circumstances that took place.” Local human rights and Mogadishu residents have accused Ugandan soldiers of routine firing into the air to disperse crowds. Civilian casualties are increasingly problematic in Mogadishu, turning residents against the peacekeepers and Somali government. Many residents are furious at the peacekeepers for shelling into civilian villages, though the peacekeepers say they are simply returning fire from insurgents. Somalia’s al-Qaeda linked group of Al-Shabaab took credit for a suicide attack that hit Kampala in July that killed more 70 people. The group said it was a revenge for the innocent Somalis killed by Ugandan peacekeepers.
