  4. Without the resolute will of our political leaders to unify us for a better tomorrow, without the willingness of our people to forgive and embrace each other but remain divided into perceived "mujahid" or "reactionary", without our compliance to the guidance of our constitution, without genuine opposition leaders with an appropriate socio-political culture true to our aspirations who instead borrow from the old tricks of crying foul at every issue, we will be stepping onto a very slippery slope, where one little slide becomes a powerful downhill, impossible to stop without a spectacular crash. Let us consider some small acts that can compromise our unity and existence. We get great comfort out of blank condemnation or blemish a whole clan by unsanctioned act of one of its individual; our rush to clan enthusiasms for anyone who is from our peers without sober appraisal of his/her character and potential to contribute to the good of our country; and embracing anyone as patriotic and a national hero so long he/she has participated only in the SNM struggle without giving much attention to his/her evil deeds to create a schism among Somaliland people. This political crisis we are now facing does not come from spur of a moment but as a result of an accumulative effect of these little compromises that we have done over the years. Let us not forget what we have is PEACE only but surrounded by an ocean of turmoil and anarchy and little skid we make could slip us into the shark-infested ocean where the sharks will dance around to our splash. Therefore, what we have to avoid is following a course that will damp our unity and working together for the good of our country and people. We could be strongest as people when we are directed by that which unites us, rather than giving into the fear, suspicion, innuendo and paranoia that will divide us. We are destined for the same goals and hopes for better future for our kids. Let us not forget that. While most of the African states are some torment, we have been hailed by the world community as Africa's " best kept secret" and rightfully so, but we should not however this time act blase over our good appraisal and respect by the world community but to challenge this political crisis with dialogue, wisdom, consensus, persistence and patience. Let us prove to the world that our ethical and moral high grounds is based in our resilience and culture, that we can do what has not been done else where in Africa; making perfect brotherly union from diversity of clans and refrain from employing the ugly face of clannism which is a plague that nibbles the fabric of African society. We might disagree on issues while sifting through democratically, stumble or fall but we have never faltered in our determination to stand up and disprove the cynics who wish ill for us. This time shouldn't be different. As a country not recognised yet, we have to know that there is no one out there to help us if we mess up this time around. We have relied all along on our unique and reverent wisdom of our forefathers and our strong kinship to avert the same fate that befell onto most Africans nations. We don't have to look far but turn our heads south of the border to see the death grip of what would become if we dare to dance to the clan tune. Our government as well as our opposition leaders, in times like this, should act responsibly to dissuade our people from worries and conduct themselves in a peaceful and brotherly manner to engage in reconciliation. Our people had been through difficult times of repression and the last thing they need is to revisit that dark era. Brothers and sister, our political leaders, our old and wise, let the unity prevail from the high mountains of Daalo in Erigavo, down the plains of Sool, through Togdher, Sahil and the fertile land of Gabiley to the Libahey mountain in the green valley of Selsel river on the west. With unity only we shall overcome this crisis to reach to the lush accommodation in a better future. In the meantime every one of us should do the little constructive contribution he/she could to send a strong signal to our leaders that what we want is, has been, and will be what is good for the country and ALL Somaliland people. May God bless Somaliland Sharmarke Ali USA

  10. NAIROBI, 13 May 2008 (IRIN) - Gangs of armed men have set up roadblocks in and around Somalia's coastal city of Kismayo, 500km south of Mogadishu, causing serious insecurity. "People's livelihoods are at stake and aid agencies have abandoned Kismayo because of the security problem," said Dahir Ali, an official with the human rights group SEDHURO. "This needs a resolution now." He said: "There is a roadblock on every corner and street, making it very difficult for people to conduct their day-to-day activities." Most international aid agencies have left Kismayo due to the insecurity. In January, services at the only hospital were halted after four people - including two foreign aid workers - were killed in a blast. The two aid workers, a Kenyan surgeon, Dr Victor Okumu, 51, and French logistician Damien Lehalle, 27, were working for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF-Holland), which was running the hospital. Ali said the insecurity posed by the many roadblocks was due to a lack of "a proper and effective local administration". However, Bile Abdi, a city elder, said local leaders were working hard to contain the situation and solve the problem "once and for all". Abdi said the main problem was a mutiny by local security personnel over non-payment of salaries. "We are going to resolve the salary issue today or tomorrow," he said. "Once that is solved, all security personnel will be encamped, thus allowing for the identification and arrest of the freelance gunmen who have been the major cause of insecurity in the town. "There is a meeting of all clans going on right now to bring every clan on board to fight the criminals as a unified community," Abdi said. However, a Kismayo businessman, who requested anonymity, told IRIN that city residents had little faith that local leaders would deal with the problem. "This is something that keeps coming back and only an effective administration can deal with it," he said. He added that the clans needed to come together to set up a unified and strong administration: "I don't know what they are afraid of." Ali said local leaders were caught up in the fight between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and insurgents, mostly loyal to the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC). The UIC, which was in control of much of south-central Somalia, was ousted by combined Ethiopian and TFG forces in December 2006. He said if an administration was set up and one side or the other saw it as "pro-UIC or TFG, then it is doomed before it even begins work. That is why it is taking so long to come up with one. They want to make sure that neither side is offended." He, however, warned that the city could not be kept "in no man's land for long".

  12. KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepal's King Gyanendra, facing imminent ouster from the throne, made perhaps his last royal public appearance at a shrine outside Kathmandu on Monday and offered annual prayers to Kali, the Hindu goddess of power. The 60-year-old king was accompanied by Queen Komal to the temple of Dakshinkali perched by the side of a stream in a jungle-clad ravine 25 km (15 miles) south of Kathmandu. Gyanendra, facing the abolition of the 239-year-old monarchy after the Maoists emerged as the biggest party in assembly elections in April, offered prayers to the "family deity." Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, called the constituent assembly to begin its session on May 28, a parliament statement said, signaling an early end to the monarchy. Under an agreement between the Maoists and the government, the first meeting of the assembly is supposed to declare an end to the monarchy and turn Nepal into a republic. Earlier at the shrine, the king sat crossed-legged in front of the deity and offered prayers as five animals - a buffalo, a goat, a lamb, a duck and a rooster - were sacrificed to goddess Kali, a common practice among Hindus, to please the deity. "This is a ritual for peace and prosperity for the self and the family," priest Sekhar Prasad Pandit said after performing the 45-minute ritual. "This is done in the hope to get one's desires fulfilled." As the king arrived driving a black limousine dozens of people including some royalists cheered and offered him flowers.
