  5. Dear all, this is an article in the new statesman by Darcus Howe 28th November 2005: wondering what we all think Thousands of Somali youths are roaming our streets in desperation, writes Darcus Howe I was sitting in the BBC’s Radio London studio on Marylebone High Street for a phone-in programme, when a caller complained about my portrayal of the Somali community in Plumstead, south London, in a documentary on Channel 4 last year. He and his friends from Somalia felt I was guilty of speaking ill about their community with no reasonable cause. I replied that it is my responsibility to hold a mirror to the communities to which I belong so that we may see ourselves, good, bad, and indifferent. At the same time we need to tell others about issues among us . . . (continues: 345 words) Read rest of article link below newstatesman Personally I find Darcus Howe somewhat unable to grasp his subject matter with the intelligence and understanding of a good social commentator. But as one of the few (black commentators) in the UK, I wish he would think about the perception he is giving and be more balanced: as in why people have left Somalia, Bosnia, Albanian and come to the UK, War “having to flee ones country†which is a quite different then, being an economic migrant. In this article and his documentary last year "who you calling a nigger"(channel 4 uk) I found his personal criticisms and the attitude of majority of the Caribbean community interviewed as sad as it is "ironic", that the older members of the community remember so clearly their own terrible treatment as new arrivals in this country during the 40/50/60s- the signs on most places to stay (no Irish, no dogs, no blacks in that order) they where economic migrants invited by the British government to work in order to keep the economy going during the recovery after the war, and they found it harsh so I wonder if they can imagine leaving in a rush and not knowing where you will end up. But yet have forgotten enough to enforce the same attitude on Somalis, Eastern Europeans and other newer members of the world wide Diaspora.

  9. he came from such tragic, hardship circumstances, listening to his concert recordings growing up and realising the racism he and other black people faced in the USA really opened my eyes to the treatment of our older generations and race relations before my time. this comment he made sums it up i feel "I live in racist America and I'm uneducated, yet a lot of people love me and like what I do, and I can make a living from it. You can't do much better than that," he made me laugh and cry RIP richard pryor

  17. Sorry people but I disagree on a few points, 1- Turkey has just begun EU entry talks and is expected to spend at least 10 years “implementing promised reforms and adopting thousands of pages of European lawâ€. We must remember the Turkish have a long way to go to EU membership and as the saying goes "anything can happen". 2- The Turkish economy is growing; turkey is the main originator of water with the region, with the origins of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in turkey. signing a massive deal with israel to supply water, which they now in (2005) can not produce enough to support the israeli population, so they also divert water away from Palestine, (selfish ****!...but that’s a whole other debate). What I am saying is that as turkey develops it should become a regional powerhouse in between 10-20 years especially with the forecast of a struggle for fresh water. 3- Turkey has a large demographic of young people, something Europe hasn’t and is not going to have, unless birth-rates go drastically up. All over Europe birth-rates are the lowest in decades, if they do not have a percentage of the population under 40 working and a percentage of the population retired, how will the state be able to afford to support the elderly and the economy, without an influx of young workers from abroad and even better from with the EU. But.... I agree with The fact that the EU is a Christian club (if half of the countries involved knew what being a Christian was about!!) instead of nonsense commentary from some of the EU state representatives. I don't think under the current or supposed future climate this is possible, we only have to look of the situation in France currently where friends tell me of the racist behaviour towards Muslims and lack of opportunity, which has being going on for so long in France it is not surprising it has all kicked off. ( if anyone who has seen La Haine a film about the youth in Paris depicting the very circumstance we are now witnessing in France in 2005, the film was made in 1995!!!) Also other European countries that have mostly followed the trend of voting in right wing governments over the last few years, so I agree completely that this will be an issue difficult to deal with unless behaviour in Europe changes. I don’t think that turkey is selling out they are trying to develop and gain grants and advice in order to do so just like any country would, and they will not have to compromise being a Islamic country in order to do so. Turkey has so much to offer the EU for trade, labour, geopolitical status and we also must not forget that turkey has collaborated with the west for sometime through NATO and other organisations. Anyway if anyone wants more info on turkey/EU please let me know

  19. everyone lets not get carried away this is the ramblings of one (not very well educated, non-any other language speaking american). looking over his blogs on africa in general he mostly makes note of "shabby people and west african "hookers" . i mention this because when i traveled with friends through asia, i don't remember one email/postcard/phonecall. where i told my family/friends about such things. we where interested in cutural differences, architecture, history, environment. what i am trying to say is that we should dismiss such blogs as he basically has nothing to tell us or anyone. imagine traveling for over a year and having a fox news perspective on international politics/history!!. hateful monkey funny!!
  20. beware of chinese investment in africa, i have read many reports from all over africa of chinese investment in infrastructure, hotels etc. granted we need to rebuild but i am wary of us all being drawn into a neo-colonial domiance with the east as well as having to deal with the continuing domiance of the west. thoughts anyone?
