Ahmed Deedat, Distinguished Islamic Scholar, Passes Away Date Posted: Monday, August 08, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Renowned Islamic scholar Ahmed Deedat passed away Monday morning. DURBAN, South Africa, Aug 8 (MASNET & News Agencies) - Sheikh Ahmed Deedat, founder of the Islamic Propagation Center International, passed away Monday after a long struggle with illness. Deedat, who was bedridden after suffering a severe stroke in 1996, died this morning at the age of 87. He fell ill shortly after a trip to Australia. Deedat was also the only South African recipient of the King Faisal Award for his service to Islam, which he received in 1986. Known particularly for his work on comparative religions, Deedat was the founder of the Islamic Propagation Center International (IPCI), the largest Islamic dawah organization in the world, reports al-Jazeera. He published more than 20 books, and distributed millions of copies and audiotapes free in the hope of spreading knowledge. Deedat's debates have been translated into various languages in video and DVD format. He also delivered thousands of lectures throughout the globe. "It is on this solemn occasion of his demise that we salute the courageous spirit and phenomenal work of this world-renowned personality, a hero of the Muslim world, nay, a true hero of believers all around the globe," a statement from IPCI said. His career in comparative religion involved him in dialogue with the heads of the Protestant church in America and the late Pope John Paul II, reports al-Jazeera. In the 1980s, Deedat was known for his debates with the priest Jimmy Swaggart and had been refused entry to France and Nigeria on the grounds his opinions might cause civil unrest. As head of the ICPI, he was critiqued by some as being controversial due to lectures on Christianity and Hinduism. Babu Jadwat, an IPCI trustee, explained why Deedat was controversial, reports the South African Independent Online. "Ahmed was the reaction to an aggression by the worldwide church against Muslims. He was successful because he was an outstanding scholar and this resonated throughout the world." "From America to Indonesia, he is regarded as a person who made tremendous contributions and sacrifices for Islam," said Jadwat. In his later years, Deedat could not talk or move after the stroke. He taught himself to communicate by blinking his eyes, reports Independent Online. Deedat's son Yousuf said his father became seriously ill three weeks ago, the online news agency reports. "My mother Hawa and I were with him when he passed away," he said. "He suffered cardiac arrest and kidney failure, but his kidneys were working again a few days later and we thought he would be fine. Sheikh Deedat, 87, passed away at his home in Trevennen Road, Verulam in the province of KwaZulu Natal at 7 a.m. His son Yusuf told IOL that the cause of his death was heart failure. The family was not in a state of shock, said Yusuf. “As Muslims we believe that every soul shall taste death.†He added that the last moments of his father’s life were peaceful, and coincided with the commencement of a recitation of "Surah Yaseen" on an Islamic radio station. “Channel Islam had just introduced and begun to play Surah Yaseen when the throes of death began,†he explained. “My father just looked at us and then passed away.†Funeral Sheikh Deedat will be buried in the Verulam cemetery after Salaatul-Maghrib (Maghreb prayers) Monday. Hundreds of people from around the country are expected to participate in his funeral prayer, and his family says that people from across the world, such as India, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have been calling to convey their condolences. “His death comes as a shock to us,†Maulana Ahmed Kathrada, of the Jamiatul ‘Ulama (Scholars' Group), a local theological body, told IOL. He added that Sheikh Deedat had served not only South Africans, but the Muslim Ummah at large, for many years. “We pray that Allah Grants him a lofty position in Jannah (Paradise), and that He Grants his family patience, especially his wife who has endured so much during the last few years.†Dedicated Wife He was bed-ridden for almost a decade. Mrs Hawa Deedat, who had spent the last nine years nursing her husband and administering his daily injections, was present at her husband’s side at the time of his death, and she is well, said Yusuf. “She is the wife of a soldier, and can therefore only be a soldier herself." Several other religious leaders and political figures expressed their sadness at the news of Sheikh Deedat’s death. Mr. Ashwin Trikamjee, president of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha, said that Sheikh Deedat would be missed by Muslims worldwide and the greater South African Muslim community. “I think that the Islamic community has lost a great man, who was totally committed to the cause of Islam,†he said. Mr. Trikamjee said that Sheikh Deedat had made a huge impact on constructive religious debate. "I don’t think any other Muslim wrote to the Pope, inviting him to Islam, but Sheikh Deedat did. His death marks the end of an era of Da’wah in which his name became synonymous with breaking down inter-faith barriers. His Life Born on July 1, 1918, Sheikh Deedat arrived in South Africa, from India, as a nine-year-old in August 1927. Although he hadn’t previously been exposed to the English language, he learnt it in six months, excelled at school and finished top of his class. However, due to financial considerations, his father removed him from school during his early years of secondary schooling. He was sent to work in a store in a rural area, where his mission of Da’wah began. Students from a Christian missionary school would visit the store preaching their beliefs to him, and knowing little more than the shahadah (testifying that no god but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet), he found it difficult to defend his beliefs. He then stumbled upon a book which carried a religious dialogue between a Muslim imam and a Christian priest, and this proved to be the first of many books which he would read on the subject. He began researching both religions and recording his findings in a notebook, after which he started delivering lectures in South Africa. First Lecture Deedat became famous for a debate with US Reverend Jimmy Swaggart, on the topic “Is the Bible the Word of God.†His first lecture was entitled “Muhammad (peace be upon him): Messenger of Peace,†at it was delivered in 1940, to 15 people at a cinema in his province. Within a short space of time, the numbers grew and people crossed the racial divides which were then prevalent in apartheid South Africa, to listen to him, and to participate in the questions and answers sessions which followed his lectures. Although some Christians and Muslims felt that his style was blunt, many others reverted to Islam, and Da’wah soon began to dominate his life, with the audiences at his lectures reaching forty thousand. In 1957, Sheikh Deedat, together with two of his friends, founded the Islamic Propagation Center which printed a variety of books and offered classes to new Muslims. In 1986, he visited Saudi Arabia for a conference, and in his first television interview, enthralled the Arab world with his dynamic personality and in depth knowledge of comparative religion. He then visited the United Kingdom, Morocco, Kenya, Sweden, Australia and Denmark on lecture and debating tours. In the United States, he became famous for a debate with the American Reverend Jimmy Swaggart, witnessed by 8,000 people on the topic “Is the Bible the Word of God.†On May 3, 1996, Sheikh Ahmed Deedat suffered a stroke which left him paralysed from the neck down, and also meant that he could no longer speak or swallow. He was flown to a hospital in Riyadh, where he was taught to communicate through a series of eye-movements. He spent the last nine years of his life in a bed in his home in Verulam, South Africa, encouraging people to engage in Da’wah. Liberal MP first foreign politician to enter Somalia and meet with Transitional Federal Government Posted to the Web Aug 08, 11:12 NAIROBI, KENYA, Aug. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - On Saturday, August 6th, Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj (Etobicoke Centre) became the first foreign politician to meet with the President, Prime Minister and Cabinet of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG), at its temporary seat of power in the Shabelle region of Somalia -- 90 km outside of the yet to be secured capital of Mogadishu. Following two days of meetings with President Abdullahi Yussef Ahmed, Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Geedi, Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament, Wrzesnewskyj travelled back to Nairobi, Kenya, by small private aircraft, from where he shared these observations by telephone: "It is heart wrenching to see the conditions in which the people of this failed state live. We all know that there are no government schools or hospitals, but I was shocked that there are no roads and that few brick or mortar buildings remain habitable. Somali Parliamentarians are living and working nine per room in an old schoolhouse. Cabinet Ministers are running a nation out of 400 square foot rooms with three tables and chairs per room. I met with the President and Prime Minister in their heavily guarded compound in Jowhar City and notwithstanding the devastation all around, I was optimistic about the future of the Somali people and their state upon seeing the dedication and skill of the President, Prime Minister and their key advisors. They bring impressive qualifications and a great reserve of knowledge that will help to make this government succeed. Most heartening was that the Somali people are united -- every Somali I met on the streets was clear, they want this Transitional Federal Government to succeed - they feel it is their only hope to reclaim a future for their children and grandchildren. There was a time when Canada was at the forefront internationally in helping states at historic crossroads. In 1974-75, Canada was the first country to help Somalia during its draught. With the outbreak of civil war and anarchy in Somalia,Canada was among the first to accept Somali refugees and we now have the largest Somali diaspora in the world. We must build upon the legacy of Lester Pearson and Canada's reputation as peacekeeper and civil society builder and we must give substance to the special relationship that we have with the Somali people." World Food Programme to carry food aid have agreed to release the vessel and crew, the WFP said on Saturday. "An agreement has been reached for the release of the ship, crew and food in the next three days," WFP spokeswoman Rene McGuffin told Reuters in Nairobi. In the most high-profile of a recent spree of hijackings off lawless Somalia, the militiamen seized the MV Semlow on June 27 as it headed for the northern port of Bossaso carrying 850 tonnes of rice given by Japan and Germany for post-tsunami aid. Armed pirates use speed boats to attack ships in the area, and even targeted a laden oil tanker in one of nine incidents in recent weeks reported by the International Maritime Bureau. In the WFP case, the pirates initially demanded a $500,000 ransom for the eight Kenyan crew members, Sri Lankan captain and Tanzanian engineer.They then reduced that to demand the rice. WFP said agreement was reached at a meeting on Friday in Jowhar -- the seat of the new Somali government -- between diplomats, local leaders and WFP country director Robert Hauser. "We are tremendously grateful to the Somali Transitional Federal Government and the Kenyan ambassador for their combined efforts to ensure that the vessel, the food, and most importantly the ten-member crew who have suffered greatly during this ordeal will be released unconditionally," Hauser said.
