Duke-The reason for not having any reasonable oppisition is cuz all those who spoke against Yeey/Cadde were/are always neutralized or removed. N I don't think there is an entity in Pland that has the resources and skills to form a new party. Maybe the like-minded Planders in the diasporo could institute new party. You are right, it is up to the diaspora to change things, they have the money and knowledge...

^^^Juje, I am calling it as it is. My opposition to the courts is noted, howver the incompetence of the TFG is well known, Geedi and Jurile and ****** like Salad Cali Jelle are making the whole govenment a laughing stock. The President has many options in his disposal, why choose this arms race? Also why are they letting the likes of Inda Cade get away with it? Because the TFG belives they can over him a position like they did with Qaynyare, Sudi and so on thus losing the support of the people. Juje, why did they welcome Qaynyare? Wwe expected him to be put in jails yet now he is being housed in Baido...

YO-YO, The response above is counter producive. I said through a peaceful method we can remove Cade with no problem. A new movement headed by a new party would be the only way to move forward. The one problem I have with Puntland is that there is no reasonable opposition in the state. All those who oppose it do so for selfish reasons, for example Faroole, Majiyahan and so on.
-
^^^Uthman, you made a good point, but who elected this ICU? And are they willing for an all inclusive government? The post regards the President, I belive his removal would call for new elections, but I would find it abhorent to see the likes of Abdiqasin and Cadow return.
-
Yo-Yo, Puntland could have a new revoloution, but a peaceful one. For example Cade has only two years left. If there was a party put in place from now on with the aim of contesting the elections and defeating Cade and his group. I think it would work easily and without the loss of any innocent life... Now if this party had new faces and support from every clan of the state in the country and in the diaspora with a clear and trasnparent agenda, I belive it would make a great difference and remove the old guard. If there was violence, rememeber Cade has support not only from the armed forces but from his sub clan, who would naturally rally around him. Also the old guard would rally to President Cade, so there needs to be a peaceful method of removing the old guard.
-
^^^The TFG presidancy does not have to go to a person from Puntland, it would be up to the Parliment who they elect. Puntland leadership would obviously come from the stae, but it would be better to have political parties rather than individuals with no agenda...
-
Sophist I await your call.. Yo-Yo. No I am not willing for a civil war in Puntand...Rather a change through peaceful means.
-
The old guard need to all go. I am tired of their rubish. But a smooth transfer of power is needed. The question is who will replace them?

Mr President 1. You have failed to put a competent government in place.. 2. You have failed to empower the people of Somalia and instead choose to play meaningless games with the warlords and armed factions. 3. Your government is corrupt and incompetent and has lost the trust of the people. 4. You have failed to avoid an all out war between the TFG and Courts with the support of Ethiopia and Eritria. Sir, it is time to retire....

While there is disagreement between the TFG and the courts, and while there is doubt to who will win and take control of Somalia. There is no doubt that the secesionist are and have been secondary players. -
There is a proxy war on the way, talks will not work if both parties are not interested in them. There will also be no millitary victory.

Ethiopian troops 'are in Somalia' The Islamic militias have taken control of much of southern Somalia Ethiopian troops are in Somalia, United Nations envoy Francois Fall has confirmed after a one-day trip there. But he told Reuters news agency reports of 4,000-5,000 troops were exaggerated. Ethiopia backs the weak transitional government based in Baidoa. They accuse Eritrea of arming the Union of Islamic Courts, who are running the capital. There are fears that Somalia could end up a battleground for a proxy war between Ethiopia and Eritrea - who fought a two-year border war. Analysts say neither Eritrea nor Ethiopia would want to see a regime in Somalia hostile to their interests. Both the Ethiopian government and the weak transitional government have refused to confirm the presence of Ethiopian troops on Somali soil. Talks Earlier, the United States called on the UIC, which controls much of southern Somalia, to resume talks with the country's interim government. But Islamic court leaders have ruled out further discussions while Ethiopian troops remain in Somalia. The Islamist militia walked out of talks in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, last week before they got under way after the Ethiopians crossed the border in support of the government. President Abdullahi Yusuf's government has little influence outside its base in Baidoa, but has the diplomatic support of the UN and the African Union (AU) and the strong backing of neighbouring Ethiopia. Mr Fall said that the indication are that there are some Ethiopian troops around Baidoa and some in Wajid - another central town. "The Ethiopians are justifying their presence inside Somalia for their own security "They're saying that some Ethiopian dissidents are in the ranks of the Islamics and those are ready to fight Ethiopia," he said from his office in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Troops Meanwhile, the AU has re-iterated its support for sending a peacekeeping force into Somalia. At its meeting on Monday, the AU's Peace and Security Council called for the deployment of peacekeepers as soon as possible. Anybody who sides with Ethiopia will be considered a traitor Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed Senior UIC leader Ethiopia on war footing Q&A: Islamist advance President Yusuf has repeatedly called for troops to be sent to bolster his government. But the UIC strongly opposes their deployment. Mr Fall had talks on Monday with the government in Baidoa and Islamic leaders in Mogadishu, in an effort to get them to resume talks and avert a possible war. He called on neighbouring countries to exercise maximum restraint and "not to interfere at this particular moment in Somalia". He also praised the impact of the Islamic courts on the streets of Mogadishu - where road blocks or gunmen are now no seen on every street corner. "I take note that [the UIC] has achieved great things in Mogadishu. I have seen it," he said.

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Ethiopian troops are in Somalia but in smaller numbers than the thousands some have claimed, the U.N. envoy to the Horn of Africa nation said on Wednesday. "I got the impression that some Ethiopians are in Somalia today," Francois Fall told Reuters after his one-day trip to Somalia on Tuesday. But reports by some regional experts and witnesses of 4,000-5,000 troops were "exaggerated," he added.

plane fuels Somalia war fears By Mohamed Ali Bile and Guled Mohamed MOGADISHU (Reuters) - A mystery cargo plane landed in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Wednesday and the interim government said it was carrying weapons from Eritrea to support rival Islamists now controlling a large part of the country. After only the second arrival of a plane at Mogadishu's old international airport since newly-powerful Islamists re-opened it days ago, residents reported seeing a medium-sized aircraft with no recognisable markings land and unload large boxes. Onlookers and journalists were prevented from entering the area by hundreds of heavily-armed Islamist militiamen guarding the airport with dozens of battle-wagons. "The plane was carrying anti-aircraft missiles and other weapons donated by Eritrea to the Islamists," deputy prime minister Ismail Mohamed Hurre told Reuters from Baidoa, provincial base of the fragile transitional government. "We condemn this, it will add more problems to Somalia," he added, without citing evidence for the weapons claim. Senior Islamists -- who took Mogadishu from U.S.-backed warlords in June and are in a standoff with the government that has raised fears of war -- declined comment. But one Islamist official, who asked not to be named, said that instead of weapons, the plane had brought "small sewing machines, which were a gift from a friendly country." While the government alleges Eritrea is arming the Islamists, they say Ethiopian troops have poured into Somalia to protect President Abdullahi Yusuf's government. The United Nations has an arms embargo on Somalia. But it has been ignored for years, and the Horn of Africa nation of 10 million people is awash with light and heavy weaponry. KHARTOUM TALKS The controversy over the plane came as Islamist leaders met to decide whether to return to talks in Khartoum with the government, which has indicated it is willing to negotiate. The Islamists's most powerful leader, hardline cleric Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, has ruled out any meeting unless Ethiopia stops its "invasion" of Somalia. Meanwhile, another Islamist leader, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, who is considered a moderate, told a gathering of ex-military officers, some of whom fought Ethiopia in a 1977-78 conflict, to prepare for war. "You will be joined by the Islamic Courts militia in defending the country and our religion against our enemies," he said to chants of "God is great!" Anti-Islamist Ethiopia has repeatedly denied sending soldiers to defend the government, which is based in the small town of Baidoa because it is powerless to move to the capital. However, U.N. envoy Francois Lonseny Fall told Reuters on Wednesday that Ethiopian troops were indeed stationed in Baidoa, and another southern town, Wajid. But he dismissed reports of up to 5,000 troops as exaggerated. Diplomats fear that Ethiopia, and its old foe Eritrea, are using Somalia as a proxy battleground to antagonise each other. The two neighbours fought a border war between 1998-2000 and still dispute the frontier. "Fundamentalists have been using Somalia as a springboard for several types of terrorist activities and all sorts of bombings in Ethiopia," said Bereket Simon, a close adviser to Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. "And the involvement of the Eritrean government in Somalia's turmoil worries us." -
Annan: Israel bombed UN base for hours UN personnel carry the body of one of the UN military observers who was killed by an Israeli bombardment of the southern Lebanese town of Khiyam. Photograph: Lotfallah Daher/AP The UN general secretary, Kofi Annan, today accused the Israeli military of carrying out a sustained bombing of the UN base on the Lebanon-Israel border that culminated in the killing of four unarmed monitors. Mr Annan said he had suggested to the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, that they carry out a joint investigation into the events that led to the shelling of the "well-established and well marked" Unifil (UN interim force in Lebanon) post in the town of Khiyam. "I spoke to Mr Olmert and he definitely believes it was a mistake and has expressed his deep sorrow, " Mr Annan told a press conference in Rome. "But the shelling started in the morning and went on until after 7pm. You cannot imagine the anguish of the unarmed men and women peacekeepers who were there." According to a detailed timeline of the incident provided by an unidentified UN officer and reported by CNN, the first bomb exploded around 200 metres from the post at 1.20pm (11.20am BST) yesterday. Unifil observers then telephoned their designated contact with the Israeli military, who assured them the attacks would stop. In the following hours, nine more bombs fell close to the post, each one followed by a call to the Israeli military, the UN officer said. The main Unifil base in the town of Naqoura lost contact with the post at 7.40pm, seemingly the time when the post received a direct hit. The UN office in Naqoura could not be contacted today. The four monitors came from Austria, Canada, China and Finland. The Chinese foreign minister, Li Zhaoxing, said today he was saddened by the news and that it showed "we should try harder to call on the parties to be restrained and to be calm and restore the peace process of the Middle East immediately". The 2,000-strong Unifil force, which sits on the Israel-Lebanon border, has suffered dozens of attacks and direct hits in two weeks of conflict. Israel is suspicious of the force and wants it beefed up with an international stabilisation force involving up to 20,000 troops.

Realistic Assessment Of The New Regime In Mogadishu
General Duke replied to General Duke's topic in Politics
First, the TFG is an inclusive entity which took tow years to form and in which every single faction in Somali participated. The election was an open one even Mr Abdiqasin took part and accepted the result. The clan courts and they are based only on a singe clan and rule a specific area, came about due to fighting. I do love how some here like Mr Red Sea would like to picture the TFG as run by warlords, was it not the warlords who opposed everything the TFG proposed? Rememebr not long ago they tried to split up the governemnt.. Their demise is mot welcome, what the courts did with Umar Finsih is no different to how the TFG treated Qaynyare. Or is sit? Cana Nuug. Inda Cade stated before the battles in Mogadishu that he was not a member of the court, there is no Sharia court in Lower Shabbele, there is an occupation by a clan gangster who seem to change their shirts every few months. They were the supporters of Arta, then they became members of the BALCAD club, now they are members of the clan courts.. They oppose the government because they want to maintain the status quo.. Red Sea, dear lad come out and support the courts, support them because you belive they will defeat the old enemy A/Yusuf.But please spare us the vomit... -

Dowladda KF Somaliya ayaa sheegtay inaysan Somaliya ku sugnayn ciidamo Itoobiyaan ah. Hadalka sheekh Aweysna wuxuu ku dhacayaa dhago aan furnayn, maadama aysan xukuumaddu qirsanayn in ciidamo Itoobiyaan ah ay kusugan yihin gudaha Somaliya. Balse Sheekha ayaa doonaya inuu khasab uga dhigo DKF inay qirato inay ciidamo keentay magaalada Baydhabo, taasoo hadhowna ku adkaan doonta inay dafirto. Labada dhinacba waxay isku eedaynayaan in Ciidamo Ajnabi ah keeneen gudaha dalka. Somalia's Islamic militia rebuffs U.N. By CHRIS TOMLINSON Associated Press Writer © 2006 The Associated Press MOGADISHU, Somalia — The leader of the Islamic militia that has taken hold of southern Somalia on Tuesday rebuffed a U.N. plan for peace talks with the government, saying he will not negotiate until the government expels all foreign troops. "Until Ethiopian troops leave Somali soil, we will never negotiate with the government," said Islamic militia leader Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys. Both Somali government leaders and the Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry have denied Ethiopian soldiers were in Somalia. However, many witnesses have confirmed their presence, in uniform. Tuesday's statement by Aweys was the latest downward turn in an increasingly difficult international effort to negotiate peace between the powerful Islamic militants and the weak government, which has international support but no military. It came as a U.N. envoy was in Somalia on Tuesday trying to arrange peace talks in Sudan aimed at avoiding more fighting in Somalia and a potentially bigger conflagration. While Aweys, who has been accused by Somali secular leaders and the West of links to al-Qaida, ruled out any talks, a more moderate member of his Supreme Islamic Courts Council left open the possibility. After meeting in Mogadishu with Francois Lonseny Fall, the U.N. special representative to Somalia, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed said the group's "peace committee" still had to consider the United Nations' call for negotiations, which would be held next week in Khartoum. In an apparent acknowledgement that Ethiopian troops were complicating peace efforts, Fall told reporters: "The U.N. is always calling on maximum restraint from neighboring countries and for them not to interfere at this particular moment in Somalia." He also praised the Islamic union. After seeing the streets of Mogadishu without roadblocks or gunmen, he said it had "achieved great things in Mogadishu. I have seen it." The troops from neighboring Ethiopia crossed into Somalia five days ago to protect Somalia's government at Baidoa, 150 miles northwest of Mogadishu, from advancing Islamic militants. The arrival of the Ethiopians heightened tensions among Somalis because Ethiopia, a largely Christian country, is the longtime enemy of Somalia, which is mostly Muslim. A round of peace talks that had been scheduled Saturday fell apart when the government refused to attend and the Islamic group walked out. The government and the fundamentalist Islamic militias reached a "nonaggression pact" in June, but the Islamic group has made clear that it sees itself as the country's main authority. The Islamic militia's seizure of power has prompted grave concerns in the United States, which accuses the group of harboring al-Qaida leaders responsible for deadly 1998 bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. Fall also met with the government in Baidoa _ the only town controlled by the government _ where a top official said it was ready for the talks. "We will go to Khartoum without any preconditions," Abdirizak Adam, President Abdullahi Yusuf's chief of staff, said after the meeting in the presidential compound, which was surrounded by hundreds of soldiers in mismatched uniforms. The meeting room had plush furniture, wall-to-wall carpet and heavy curtain blocking out almost all outside light. A government spokesman said talks still could go on with moderate members of the Islamic militia, even if Aweys was rejecting them. "Aweys is a terrorist, so it not surprising that he is refusing talks," Salad Ali Jeeley said. "We hope the moderate Islamists will attend the meeting." Somalia has been without an effective central government since warlords toppled dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned on each other, carving much of the country into armed camps ruled by violence and clan law. The government was established almost two years ago with the support of the U.N. to serve as a transitional body to help Somalia emerge from anarchy. But the leadership, which includes some warlords linked to the violence of the past, has failed to establish any power. ___ Associated Press writers Salad Duhul and Mohamed Sheikh Nor in Mogadishu, Mohamed Olad Hassan in Baidoa and Les Neuhaus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, contributed to this report.

AU reaffirms support to Somalia's transitional government The African Union (AU) on Tuesday reaffirmed its full support to Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG), which is currently based in Baidoa, 240 km from the Somali capital Mogadishu. In a press statement issued after a meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council, the pan-African body once again called on all concerned Somali parties "to seek the path of dialogue and to extend the necessary cooperation to the TFG in order to achieve lasting peace and reconciliation in Somalia, building on the dialogue facilitated by the Arab League." It urged the United Nations Security Council "to expedite action on AU request for granting an exemption to the arms embargo "in order to facilitate the early deployment of peacekeepers. The UN imposed an arms embargo on Somalia in 1992 in a bid to stem the bloodshedding that erupted in the country as leaders of the rebel movement that overthrew Muhammad Siyad Barre turned against each other in a power struggle. In Somalia, the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) took control of Mogadishu early last month after routing an alliance of warlords whose militias have held sway in the city since the early 1990s. Somalia is currently without a functioning national administration and has been wracked by civil strife since 1991 when the regime led by Siyad was toppled. At present, there are reports that Ethiopian troops over the weekend moved into the Somali town of Wajid. Earlier, some reports said Ethiopian troops crossed the border and entered Baidoa, the current base of the TFG. However, Ethiopia denied incursions into Somalia, saying that its forces only massed near the border to monitor the situation. Source: Xinhua
