Operation to Restore Peace and Stability Across Somalia
Xaaji Xunjuf replied to Che -Guevara's topic in Politics
^^ And their argument is (icu) Islamic courts union is not Alshabaab even though Alshabaab is an obstacle to peace and stability in Somalia that's still not a reason to invite your arch enemy inside you're territory. -
BREAKING: Horn of Africa: US Proxy War in Somalia Veers Towards Regional Conflict Ethiopia’s anticipated invasion marks scramble for territory with Kenyan rival January 1, 2012 The conflict in Somalia has been raised to dramatically higher stakes at the weekend after Ethiopian troops occupied a central town, routing Al Shabab militants in fighting that claimed dozens of lives. The Ethiopian military entered the town of Beledweyne near its border on Saturday morning along with Somali troops belonging to the Western-backed Transitional Federal Government. The latter has been battling with Al Shabab Islamic militants for the past two years, but has only managed to maintain tenuous control of the capital, Mogadishu. Large areas of the country, especially to the south, have been under the command of the militants. Earlier reports of Ethiopian troops having invaded Somalia with heavy armour were denied by the government in Addis Ababa. But the weekend offensive now confirms Ethiopia’s involvement in its neighbour to the east. Almost every country in the Horn of Africa has a military presence in war-torn Somalia. In mid-October Kenyan forces mounted a large-scale invasion of Somalia with thousands of troops backed up with tanks and fighter jets. Nearly three months on, Kenyan forces are still battling with Al Shabab militants mainly in the territory south of Mogadishu on Kenya’s north-eastern border. Last month, a contingent of troops from Djibouti arrived in Mogadishu, officially welcomed by the Somali government to join forces from Burundi and Uganda, which have been present in Somalia for the past two years as part of an African Union (AU) “peacekeeping mission” to combat the militants. In addition to these contingencies is the involvement of the United States and France. Washington and Paris have given military support to the Kenyan and AU forces. American aerial attack drones and French naval firepower have coordinated with the Kenyan ground assault. A week before Djibouti troops were dispatched to Somalia, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta visited Djibouti where he warned about “key terror nodes in Yemen and Somalia”. Ethiopia is also a close Washington ally. The government in Addis Ababa was given the green light by then President Bush to invade Somalia in 2006 in a bid to oust the Islamic Courts Union that was in power then. The latest intervention by Ethiopia is unlikely to have been sanctioned without Washington’s clearance. Superficially, it would appear that Washington is orchestrating a multi-prong offensive against the Somali militants. The US agenda has little to do with fighting terrorism and is motivated by geopolitical concern to assert control over the strategically important East African country. The country has been wracked by conflict for the past two decades ever since the US-backed Siad Barre dictatorship was overthrown in 1991. With its coastline overlooking the key oil routes of the Gulf of Yemen and Red Sea, the US has been vexed by Somalia’s relentless instability – instability that has been largely engendered by Washington’s proxy warmongering in the region. The US-backed government in Mogadishu, which is accused of corruption and misrule, has proven incapable of decisively controlling the country. Even with generous aid from Washington and military support from neighbouring US-backed states, including the presence of US mercenaries, the government in Mogadishu can only but cling on to its central seat of power. The entry of forces from Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti could be seen as Washington trying to ratchet up the military pressure on Al Shabab. But of deeper concern is that US proxy war-making in East Africa could be stoking up nationalist rivalries that may backfire in a regional war between the various players who so far appear to be on the same side, that is, in doing Washington’s dirty work against Al Shabab. In recent years Ethiopia’s regional leadership has been challenged by the rise of Kenya. Both countries share borders with Somalia and, historically preceding colonial demarcations, both lay claim to adjacent Somali territories. When Kenyan forces invaded Somalia in October, there was a marked diplomatic silence from Ethiopia. Ethiopia had suffered a humiliating defeat when it carried out its US-backed military gambit in Somalia in 2006. With the US latterly turning to Kenya as its favoured proxy there seemed to be a certain chagrin felt in Addis Ababa. While appearing to do Washington’s bidding against Al Shabab, political sources in Kenya have told Global Research that Nairobi’s agenda is to annex a large swathe of Somalia’s southern Jubbaland territory, historically known as Azania. There have also been reports of Kenyan politicians surreptitiously striking oil deals with French company Total in this part of Somalia. Another crucial natural resource for Kenya in that territory is the acquisition of freshwater, which Kenya is in short supply of. With Somalia’s territorial integrity at risk from 20 years of internecine violence and lawlessness – despite Washington’s efforts to shore up the federal government – it can be seen as only a matter of time before Ethiopia would join in a scramble for neighbouring land. It is significant that the latest invasion by Ethiopia has targeted the central part of Somalia, the south already being assailed by Kenyan forces. So far, Washington’s orchestration of conflict in Somalia may appear as a smart bid for neocolonial control. But the real danger is when the deep-seated regional rivalries of Washington’s proxies start to clash at close quarters. And given the desperate need for natural resources in this famine-prone region, the stakes of any resultant all-out conflict take on even greater urgency and mordancy. So he is putting his bets on Cade muse getting the people on the anti farole bandwagon!!! But Farole and His Kids are really setting themselves up like Saddam Hussein and Qusay and His Kids administration. Bosaso is the biggest city in Puntland and only recieved 1% of the student scholarships, does that make sense? of course not!!! He is holding back alot of progress for the city for example the Bosaso airport run-way is not complete, he threw out the agreement with Lootah to modernize Bosaso Port and turn it into a freezome where Puntland controls 70% and Lootah 30% where they would've of invested in the most modern deep-sea port in Somalia with the best of technologies. He rejected even Golis building their grand headquarters in Bosaso and Golis had to cut a deal with Farole to build one in Garowe thats why the Golis towers were to be be the biggest tower in Somalia it was going to be 10 stories now its only 7 stories and 3 story branch will be implemented in Garowe!!! His Kids are really bad, u remember diyano why u think he left Bosaso and went to kenya? maxamed farole kid had soldiers everyday outside of the PIS headquarters threatening diyano and his boys and diyano saw the best thing to do is leave before a war starts within Bosaso. His kids are now even saying noone can eat at certain restaurants and they must eat at the faroles, his taken over some of the bakeries in Bosaso also!! So Naturally the kings are going to be mad when you have an administration that clearly prefers garowe only!!! Yeah the airport construction was started by Mr Ade Muse but the airport is active faroole might have stopped some projects to modernize the bari region osman who do you think is behind the killings in bari the elders that were gunned down last year April. But keep in mind Osman faroole's term is ending this year so he will be leaving office or do you think osman he will run for a second term. -

Turkey takes giant leap toward Africa, prioritizes Somalia on agenda Ministers from various African countries gathered in İstanbul for the Turkey-Africa Partnership Ministerial Review Conference, organized by the Turkish Foreign Ministry. (Photo: AA) Saturday, December 31, 2011 Keeping up its wide-range initiative for closer ties with Africa, Turkey throughout the year added to its foreign missions and sped up ambassadorial appointments all over Africa, but its main focus stayed on Somalia as the country went through its most severe drought in a century in the summer of 2011. As part of the ruling Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) initiative to increase the country's representation to a striking 95 percent of the African continent, Turkey geared up efforts in 2011 to connect to the continent through its newly established embassies, in hopes that the country will reach close to four dozen missions in Africa within a few years. While the country focused on its foreign missions and the appointment of ambassadors to the newly established spots, the Somali famine dominated Turkey's global agenda and even the speech Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered at the General Assembly session of the September UN meeting. Addressing leaders of the world, Erdoğan called on UN nations to act on Somalia, repeating his sorrow over the high number of Somali deaths due to the harshest drought and famine the country has experienced within the last century. In regard to humanitarian efforts, Turkey has championed the delivery of urgently needed supplies ranging from medicine to food, as well as the digging of water wells in the country through a unified relief act organized by the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TİKA), the Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay), the Religious Affairs Directorate and the Directorate of Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD), mobilizing all efforts to give aid to the best of the country's ability. Turkey also called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in August to set up an urgent meeting regarding the Somali crisis; the UN revealed that in the summer of 2011, 187 Somali children out of every 1,000 died before the age of 5. Kenya and Ethiopia were also hit by famine, but conditions improved by December, due to both a weakening in the persistence of environmental conditions and contributions donated to Africa throughout the year. In various international platforms, Turkish officials repeated their calls for humanitarian aid to be delivered to Somalia as some senior officials lashed out at world powers for standing idly by at the sight of the catastrophe. Turkey raised $350 million by October through both the means of the state and private enterprise. Turkey's immediate intervention aiding the victims of the African disaster was crowned by a visit from both Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, as both leaders went to Africa with their spouses to reaffirm Turkey's support for the famine-stricken nations. Erdoğan was hailed in the international media for his visit to Somalia, as he is one of very few leaders to step foot in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital and a city not only devastated by famine but also by terrorism, as rebels targeted the Somali government through suicide missions after they were defeated by the Somali army. Sporadic fighting between the Somali army and rebels in the country has claimed the lives of many of those who survived disease and malnutrition. Adding to Turkey's improved image both in Africa and on the world stage for its sensitivity toward the humanitarian tragedy in the Horn of Africa, Turkey also hosted in December a Turkey-Africa Partnership Ministerial Review Conference in İstanbul, which 54 African ministers attended along with representatives from important African institutions, achieving the risky task of gathering so many diverse voices under one roof. The aim of the summit was largely to improve economic ties among African nations and Turkey, as well as to demonstrate Turkey's commitment to establishing a better, more effective and institutionalized mechanism to further enhance relations with the continent. Africa, in return, demanded that more schools and hospitals be built and operated by Turks in the coming years. Prior to the summit, in October, Turkey's Africa initiative was further boosted with the appointments of Ahmet Rıza Demirer to Gabon, Hasan Ulusoy to Niger and Ali Rıza Coşkun to The Gambia, where the ambassadors have already started heading the newly established embassies. Alongside business agreements and trade deals, Turkey's Africa initiatives further aim to help improve African infrastructure through assistance in fields including agricultural development, irrigation, energy and education, and the country took an active part in most of the UN missions deployed in Africa in 2011 by way of providing personnel and making financial contributions. As in the last decade, Turkey tried on all fronts in 2011 to show the African continent that it is genuine in its interest and its projects are long-lasting. By the end of 2011, the African Union president named Turkey as the first country the union truly trusted, referring to European countries that shut down their embassies during the continent's hard times, leaving them to face their fate alone.
