  1. I loved watching Nadia Secret of Blue Water just because its protagonist was black
  2. Many variable; lack of peace thus cultivation and time of the year included, the river basin can never turn into a desert.
  3. ^ Excuse my ignorance, but what is so difficult about extending the runway a further 0.5km? For a layman it would seem like a typical road construction that is just in need of tar, asphalt and labour. Perhaps my question is better worded: what are the differences between a runway and a typical major road?
  4. I meant the actual calligraphy, did you write that yourself or did you use someone elses image to imprint on the piece of wood?
  5. You copied the text, didnt you?
  6. You are right but it is not true that there should be a basic universal truth to art, be it beauty, emotion, narrative etc.? What constitutes modern art today is basically decided upon by a very small group of mega wealthy collectors (Saatchi et al) whose involvement drives and manufactures demand.

I remember there was this musuem once on the news with completely blank canvases on display, claiming it was "art". Eyesores how exactly? I actually reject much of the artistically bankrupt garbage paraded around as modern 'conceptual' art, but I appreciate the simplicity and scale of Ron Mueck's work. His work is and technique I find quite pleasing and the fact you need not go through paragraphs explaining the work in order to understand it only adds to its appeal. I remember going to see an exhibition of her drawings (I was young and foolish) only to be shocked to see what grownass men and women were marvelling at there, utter tragedy!
  8. Ever had the feeling that your job might be made up? That the world would keep on turning if you weren’t doing that thing you do 9-5? David Graeber explored the phenomenon of bullshit jobs for our recent summer issue – everyone who’s employed should read carefully… http://www.strikemag.org/bullshit-jobs/ I found the article interesting and thought posters here might appreciate it. I'm not sure it holds up to scrutiny but it's certainly given me food for thought.
  9. What worries me is the fact that those who hold such history are dying off and surprisingly there isn't an initiative to record this vast and valuable historical resource. With regards to literature, well I am well aware of our prowess in verse, but there is not much of a Somali library is there? Books in folk tales and fiction should be quite popular I would've thought. Haatu, how would you explain the lack of development in pictorial narrative in Somalia? I mean, the cave paintings are an example of our innate ability and they would rival those seen in places like France etc

Hobbesian_Brute;973794 wrote: Absolutely, somalis have high verbal skills but atrocious visuospatial skills. our brains are so skewed towards oral side of things, that somalis can't appreciate visual art. Even at that, you would expect such oral skills to translate well into literature, theatre and song writing but even at that it seems we just do not do it well. It really is puzzling. Back to great art: Some surface anatomy studies from students at Ilya Repin St.Petersburg State Academy:
  11. And your point being? Would you like me to get crime rates from Norway, Japan or Switzerland? How about graphs on poverty? equality? standards of living? charitable contributions and aid? How about Health and general practitioners per capita? Access to and quality of education? I can go on..
  12. And you are absolutely right, I friggin' love Gerome! Damn!

Well played! Its a 'Somali' thing though isnt it? This lack of visual artistic language. There are some great muslim artists so its surely not a Muslim thing. Some more: Hokusai: And his most famous creation: And for all of you sneaker enthusiasts this is the winged Goddess of victory: Nike of Samothrace
  14. Inspired by the Inspiring Architecture thread, I thought I would share with you some art, seeing as your typical nomad would never be caught dead in a museum, perhaps talking about it online would ease the process of introducing folk to works of Art. We could start with sharing a few of our favourite artists? Del Sarto Rembrandt: Norman Rockwell: John Singer Sargent Ilya Repin An other one of his is in my top 10 of all time:
  15. A bunch of Qaad chewing, Laxoox gobbling xayraans, all 50 mill of them

MoonLight1;973765 wrote: lol now I know you are lying to mislead, you posted a 2011 article about the armies interim legislation about parties, but you are ignoring the new constitution which was approved in December 2012 referendum by 68% of the population which gives people freedom to form faith based parties. your just playing a useless cat and mouse game here sxb, and this circle of lies and selective memories is just becoming fruitless, I will not want another second to waste with you. as to what Morsy achieved in a year?, I think we got tired of that argument. It is precisely the butchering of the Egyptian constitution that placed your pal Mursi behind bars I am not playing any games, to prove that I would like to extend the same question to you: What are the achievements of your Islamist Egyptian government in its year of rule? Simples.
  17. kickz;973756 wrote: Asinine, in a Muslim country to ban their way of life is insulting. This is the myth of democracy, as long as Islam doesn't come to power it is the ideal model. But the fallacy here is given a fair election an Islamic government will always be elected.by a Muslim majority The same Muslim majority who woke up to the fact that Islam is the solution slogans were empty promises, its a futile practice to mix religion and politics and it was by a popular uprising larger than the one that drove Mubarak out that Morsi experienced. Can you tell me the achievements of your Islamic ruler Mohamed Mursi and his PM? MoonLight1;973757 wrote: you mean Mubarak's constitution, that was kicked out of the window by the 25th of January revolution, you must have been in deep sleep to miss the new constitution approved by 68% of the people in december 2012 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-20829911 stop this selective nonsense game sxb. No, the constitutional amendment commission maintained the clause in Egyptian constitution that prohibited the formation of parties on the basis of religion. Say hello to the Egyptian Constitution: Article 4: Citizens have the right to establish associations, syndicates, federations, and parties according to the law. It is forbidden to form associations whose activities are opposed to the order of society or secret or of militaristic nature. No political activity shall be exercised nor political parties established on a religious referential authority, on a religious basis or on discrimination on grounds of gender or origin.

Nonsensical logic. Religious political parties are outlawed in the Egyptian constitution. An Islamic party has no right to exist.
